Abstract

Methods and devices for providing a minimally-invasive placement of a mechanical structure for reducing the volume of a hollow body organ. Intragastric bands may be secured within the hollow body organ and then reduced in diameter to form a stricture within the hollow body organ. The strictures may be placed anywhere within the hollow body organ, and more than one stricture may be formed within the hollow body organ.

Claims

1. A method for reducing the volume of the stomach comprising the steps of:

positioning a device within a patient'"'"'s stomach, the device providing a means to create at least one stricture within the stomach via an esophageal approach and endoscopic guidance.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the stricture is an adjustable band attached to the stomach wall.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein said band is stapled (or crimped) to the stomach wall.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein said staples are constructed from stainless steel, shape-memory alloys, polymer or composite.

5. The method of claim 3, wherein said band is riveted to the stomach wall.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein said rivets are constructed from stainless steel, shape-memory alloys, polymer or composite.

7. The method of claim 2, wherein said band is sutured to the stomach wall.

8. The method of claim 2, wherein said band incorporates hooks or barbs for attachment to the stomach wall.

9. The method of claim 2, wherein said band incorporates a combination of hooks and at least one of the following attachment methods:

staples, crimped members, rivets, sutures, adhesive.

10. The method of claim 2, wherein said attachment includes the use of an adhesive.

11. The method of claim 2, wherein said band is constructed of stainless steel, shape-memory alloys, polymer, or composite.

12. The method of claim 2, wherein said band incorporates a fabric lining along at least a portion of the circumference for attachment to the stomach wall via staples, sutures, rivets, or the like.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein said fabric consists of woven material, non-woven polymer fabric or a polymer mesh.

14. The method of claim 12, wherein said fabric is constructed from a polymer, stainless steel, or shape-memory alloy.

15. The method of claim 2, wherein more than one band is placed.
