Abstract

A DC backup power supply system having a battery a charge-discharge circuit for charging and discharging a power between the battery and a DC line and a control circuit for controlling the charge-discharge circuit, wherein the battery has a number of battery cells and cylindrical portions of the battery cells are laid on an approximately horizontal plane.

Claims

1. A DC backup power supply system for supplying DC power to a load normally receiving DC power through an AC/DC converter supplying the DC power to the load through a DC/DC converter, comprising:

a battery;

a charge-discharge circuit; and

a control circuit,

wherein the DC backup power supply system is connected to the load so as to supply the DC power to the load through the DC/DC converter.

2. A DC backup power supply system according to claim 1, wherein said battery has a number of battery cells, cylindrical portions of the battery cells are laid on an approximately horizontal plane, and a height of said battery is not greater than 45 mm.

A DC backup power supply system according to claim 1, wherein said battery has a number of battery cells, cylindrical portions of the battery cells are laid on an approximately horizontal plane, and said battery is accommodated in a space having a height corresponding to one unit (1U) size of a 19-inch rack.

4. A DC backup power supply system according to claim 3, wherein two DC backup power supply systems each having a rated output power of at least 700 W are accommodated side by side in the space having the height corresponding to the one unit (1U) size.

5. A DC backup power supply system according to claim 1, wherein said battery has at least 40 sub-C size nickel-metal-hydride battery cells.

6. A DC backup power supply system according to claim 5, wherein the nickel-metal-hydride battery cells include at least two parallel connections of nickel-metal-hydride battery cells.

7. A DC backup power supply system according to claim 3, wherein three DC backup power supply systems each having a rated output power of at least 400 W are accommodated side by side in the space having the height corresponding to the one unit (1U) size.

8. A DC backup power supply system according to claim 7, wherein said battery has at least 20 sub-C size nickel-metal-hydride battery cells.

9. A DC backup power supply system according to claim 1, wherein when a full-charged voltage of said battery is not greater than 48 V, a voltage at a DC line is set at a voltage at least equal to the voltage of the full-charged voltage of said battery.

10. A DC backup power supply system according to claim 4, wherein the rated output power is supplied for at least 6 minutes under the conditions that a temperature of said battery is at least 10°

C., an internal impedance of said battery is not greater than twice an initial value and said battery is in a full-charged state.

12. A DC backup power supply system according to claim 1, further comprising control means, and when a power supplied from a DC line and consumed by the load exceeds a predetermined value, said control means activates the DC backup power supply system to supply power to the load.

13. A DC backup power supply system according to claim 1, wherein the DC backup power supply system is connected to a junction between an output to the AC/DC converter and an input of the DC/DC converter.

14. A DC backup power supply system according to claim 1, wherein said battery has a number of battery cells and cylindrical portions of the battery cells are laid on an approximately horizontal plane.

15. A DC backup power supply system according to claim 14, wherein the battery cells are arranged so that a positive electrode of one battery cell is adjacent to a negative electrode of an adjacent battery cell.

16. A DC backup power supply system according to claim 1, wherein the charge-discharge circuit and the control circuit have a height which is greater than a height of the battery.

17. A DC backup power supply system according to claim 16, wherein the height of the charge-discharge circuit and the control circuit is less than 44 mm.

18. A DC backup power supply system according to claim 1, wherein the battery is arranged in the DC backup power supply system so that a space is delimited above the battery through which cooling air passes.

11. A DC backup power supply system for a load normally supplied by AC, comprising:

a battery;

a charge discharge circuit and a control circuit for controlling said charge-discharge circuit;

wherein said battery has a number of battery cells, cylindrical portions of the battery cells being laid on an approximately horizontal plane;

wherein at least one DC backup power supply system is provided; and

wherein the at least one DC backup power supply system has electric hot swap connections using connectors and cables which enable replacement of the at least one DC backup power supply system while the load is operational by supply of the AC.

19. A DC backup power supply system according to claim 11, wherein a plurality of DC backup power supply systems are provided, each of the plurality of DC backup power supply systems having electric hot swap connections.

The DC backup power supply system according to claim 11, wherein the AC is supplied to the load through a AC/DC converter and a DC/DC converter, and the at least one DC backup power supply system is connected to a junction between the AC/DC converter and the DC/DC converter for supplying power to the load through the DC/DC converter.

21. A DC backup power supply system according to claim 11, wherein said battery has at least 40 sub-C size nickel-metal-hydride battery cells.

22. A DC backup power supply system according to claim 21, wherein the nickel-metal-hydride battery cells include at least two parallel connections of nickel-metal-hydride battery cells.

23. A DC backup power supply system according to claim 11, wherein when a full-charged voltage of said battery is not greater than 48 V, a voltage at a DC line is set at a voltage at least equal to the voltage of the full-charged voltage of said battery.

24. A DC backup power supply system according to claim 11, wherein the rated output power is supplied for at least 6 minutes under the conditions that a temperature of said battery is at least 10°

C., an internal impedance of said battery is not greater than twice an initial value and said battery is in a full-charged state.
