Abstract

A display device according to the present invention includes: a planarization layer for insulating between a gate electrode etc. and a data wiring, a drain electrode, or the like of the transistor; and a barrier layer that is formed on an upper surface or lower surface of the planarization layer and at the same time, adapted to suppress diffusion of moisture or degassing components from the planarization layer. The display device adopts a device structure effective in reducing the plasma damage on the planarization layer by devising a positional relationship between the planarization layer and the barrier layer. Also, in combination with a novel structure as a structure for a pixel electrode, effects such as an increase in luminance can be provided as well.

Claims

1. A display device comprising:

a thin film transistor formed over a substrate, wherein the thin film transistor comprises a semiconductor film and a gate electrode with a gate insulating film interposed therebetween;

a barrier layer formed over the gate electrode;

a planarization layer formed over the barrier layer;

an electrode formed over the planarization layer, wherein the electrode is electrically connected to the semiconductor film;

a pixel electrode formed over the planarization layer, wherein the pixel electrode is electrically connected to the electrode;

a resin film formed over the planarization film, wherein the resin film covers a portion of the pixel electrode, and wherein a side surface of the resin film is rounded; and

a light emitting member formed on the pixel electrode.

2. A display device according to claim 1, wherein the barrier layer comprises silicon nitride.

3. A display device according to claim 1, wherein the planarization layer comprises an inorganic insulating film formed by spin-coating.

4. A display device according to claim 1, wherein the planarization layer comprises an inorganic insulating film leveled by polishing.

5. A display device according to claim 1, wherein the pixel electrode comprises an oxide conductive film.

6. A display device according to claim 1, wherein the pixel electrode comprises a metal film.

7. A display device according to claim 1, wherein the light emitting member comprises an organic compound or an inorganic compound.

8. A display device according to claim 1, wherein the display device is incorporated in at least one selected from the group consisting of a television, a digital camera, a personal computer, a mobile computer, an image reproducing apparatus, a goggle-type display, a video camera, and a cellular phone.

9. A display device comprising:

a thin film transistor formed over a substrate, wherein the thin film transistor comprises a semiconductor film and a gate electrode with a gate insulating film interposed therebetween;

a planarization layer formed over the gate electrode;

a barrier layer formed over the planarization layer;

an electrode formed over the barrier layer, wherein the electrode is electrically connected to the semiconductor film;

a pixel electrode formed over the barrier layer, wherein the pixel electrode is electrically connected to the electrode;

a resin film formed over the barrier layer, wherein the resin film covers a portion of the pixel electrode, and wherein a side surface of the resin film is rounded; and

a light emitting member formed on the pixel electrode.

10. A display device according to claim 9, wherein the barrier layer comprises silicon nitride.

11. A display device according to claim 9, wherein the planarization layer comprises an inorganic insulating film formed by spin-coating.

12. A display device according to claim 9, wherein the planarization layer comprises an inorganic insulating film leveled by polishing.

13. A display device according to claim 9, wherein the pixel electrode comprises an oxide conductive film.

14. A display device according to claim 9, wherein the pixel electrode comprises a metal film.

15. A display device according to claim 9, wherein the light emitting member comprises an organic compound or an inorganic compound.

16. A display device according to claim 9, wherein the display device is incorporated in at least one selected from the group consisting of a television, a digital camera, a personal computer, a mobile computer, an image reproducing apparatus, a goggle-type display, a video camera, and a cellular phone.

17. A display device comprising:

a thin film transistor formed over a substrate, wherein the thin film transistor comprises a semiconductor film and a gate electrode with a gate insulating film interposed therebetween;

a barrier layer formed over the gate electrode;

an insulating layer formed over the barrier layer;

an electrode formed over the insulating layer, wherein the electrode is electrically connected to the semiconductor film;

a planarization layer formed over the electrode and the insulating layer;

a pixel electrode formed over the planarization layer, wherein the pixel electrode is electrically connected to the electrode;

a resin film formed over the planarization film, wherein the resin film covers a portion of the pixel electrode, and wherein a side surface of the resin film is rounded; and

a light emitting member formed on the pixel electrode.

18. A display device according to claim 17, wherein the barrier layer comprises silicon nitride.

19. A display device according to claim 17, wherein the planarization layer comprises an inorganic insulating film formed by spin-coating.

20. A display device according to claim 17, wherein the planarization layer comprises an inorganic insulating film leveled by polishing.

21. A display device according to claim 17, wherein the insulating layer comprises an organic insulating film or an inorganic insulating film.

22. A display device according to claim 17, wherein the pixel electrode comprises an oxide conductive film.

23. A display device according to claim 17, wherein the pixel electrode comprises a metal film.

24. A display device according to claim 17, wherein the light emitting member comprises an organic compound or an inorganic compound.

25. A display device according to claim 17, wherein the display device is incorporated in at least one selected from the group consisting of a television, a digital camera, a personal computer, a mobile computer, an image reproducing apparatus, a goggle-type display, a video camera, and a cellular phone.

27. A display device according to claim 25, wherein the barrier layer comprises silicon nitride.

28. A display device according to claim 25, wherein the planarization layer comprises an inorganic insulating film formed by spin-coating.

29. A display device according to claim 25, wherein the planarization layer comprises an inorganic insulating film leveled by polishing.

30. A display device according to claim 25, wherein the insulating layer comprises an organic insulating film or an inorganic insulating film.

31. A display device according to claim 25, wherein the pixel electrode comprises an oxide conductive film.

32. A display device according to claim 25, wherein the pixel electrode comprises a metal film.

33. A display device according to claim 25, wherein the light emitting member comprises an organic compound or an inorganic compound.

34. A display device according to claim 25, wherein the display device is incorporated in at least one selected from the group consisting of a television, a digital camera, a personal computer, a mobile computer, an image reproducing apparatus, a goggle-type display, a video camera, and a cellular phone.

26. A display device comprising:

a thin film transistor formed over a substrate, wherein the thin film transistor comprises a semiconductor film and a gate electrode with a gate insulating film interposed therebetween;

an insulating layer formed over the gate electrode;

a barrier layer formed over the insulating layer;

an electrode formed over the barrier layer, wherein the electrode is electrically connected to the semiconductor film;

a planarization layer formed over the electrode and the barrier layer;

a pixel electrode formed over the planarization layer, wherein the pixel electrode is electrically connected to the electrode;

a resin film formed over the planarization film, wherein the resin film covers a portion of the pixel electrode, and wherein a side surface of the resin film is rounded; and

a light emitting member formed on the pixel electrode.

35. A display device comprising:

a thin film transistor formed over a substrate, wherein the thin film transistor comprises a semiconductor film and a gate electrode with a gate insulating film interposed therebetween;

a barrier layer formed over the gate electrode;

a planarization layer formed over the barrier layer;

an electrode formed over the planarization layer, wherein the electrode is electrically connected to the semiconductor film through a contact hole opened in the barrier layer and the planarization layer;

a pixel electrode formed over the planarization layer, wherein the pixel electrode is electrically connected to the electrode;

a resin film formed over the planarization layer, wherein the resin film covers the contact hole and a portion of the pixel electrode, and wherein a side surface of the resin film is rounded; and

a light emitting member formed on the pixel electrode.

36. A display device according to claim 35, wherein the barrier layer comprises silicon nitride.

37. A display device according to claim 35, wherein the planarization layer comprises an inorganic insulating film formed by spin-coating.

38. A display device according to claim 35, wherein the planarization layer comprises an inorganic insulating film leveled by polishing.

39. A display device according to claim 35, wherein the pixel electrode comprises an oxide conductive film.

40. A display device according to claim 35, wherein the pixel electrode comprises a metal film.

41. A display device according to claim 35, wherein the display device is incorporated in at least one selected from the group consisting of a television, a digital camera, a personal computer, a mobile computer, an image reproducing apparatus, a goggle-type display, a video camera, and a cellular phone.

42. A display device according to claim 35, wherein the light emitting member comprises an organic compound or an inorganic compound.

43. A display device comprising:

a thin film transistor formed over a substrate, wherein the thin film transistor comprises a semiconductor film and a gate electrode with a gate insulating film interposed therebetween;

a planarization layer formed over the gate electrode;

a barrier layer formed over the planarization layer;

an electrode formed over the barrier layer, wherein the electrode is electrically connected to the semiconductor film through a contact hole opened in the barrier layer and the planarization layer;

a pixel electrode formed over the barrier layer, wherein the pixel electrode is electrically connected to the electrode;

a resin film formed over the barrier layer, wherein the resin film covers the contact hole and a portion of the pixel electrode, and wherein a side surface of the resin film is rounded; and

a light emitting member formed on the pixel electrode.

44. A display device according to claim 43, wherein the barrier layer comprises silicon nitride.

45. A display device according to claim 43, wherein the planarization layer comprises an inorganic insulating film formed by spin-coating.

46. A display device according to claim 43, wherein the planarization layer comprises an inorganic insulating film leveled by polishing.

47. A display device according to claim 43, wherein the pixel electrode comprises an oxide conductive film.

48. A display device according to claim 43, wherein the pixel electrode comprises a metal film.

49. A display device according to claim 43, wherein the light emitting member comprises an organic compound or an inorganic compound.

50. A display device according to claim 43, wherein the display device is incorporated in at least one selected from the group consisting of a television, a digital camera, a personal computer, a mobile computer, an image reproducing apparatus, a goggle-type display, a video camera, and a cellular phone.

51. A display device comprising:

a thin film transistor formed over a substrate, wherein the thin film transistor comprises a semiconductor film and a gate electrode with a gate insulating film interposed therebetween;

an insulating layer formed over the gate electrode;

a barrier layer formed over the insulating layer;

a planarization layer formed over the barrier layer;

an electrode formed over the planarization layer, wherein the electrode is electrically connected to the semiconductor film through a contact hole opened in the planarization layer, the barrier layer and the insulating layer;

a resin film formed over the planarization layer, wherein the resin film covers the contact hole and a portion of the electrode, and wherein a side surface of the resin film is rounded; and

a light emitting member formed on the electrode.

52. A display device according to claim 51, wherein the barrier layer comprises silicon nitride.

53. A display device according to claim 51, wherein the planarization layer comprises an inorganic insulating film formed by spin-coating.

54. A display device according to claim 51, wherein the planarization layer comprises an inorganic insulating film leveled by polishing.

55. A display device according to claim 51, wherein the insulating layer comprises an organic insulating film or an inorganic insulating film.

56. A display device according to claim 51, wherein the light emitting member comprises an organic compound or an inorganic compound.

57. A display device according to claim 51, wherein the display device is incorporated in at least one selected from the group consisting of a television, a digital camera, a personal computer, a mobile computer, an image reproducing apparatus, a goggle-type display, a video camera, and a cellular phone.

58. A display device comprising:

a thin film transistor formed over a substrate, wherein the thin film transistor comprises a semiconductor film and a gate electrode with a gate insulating film interposed therebetween;

an insulating layer formed over the gate electrode;

a planarization layer formed over the insulating layer;

a barrier layer formed over the planarization layer;

an electrode formed over the barrier layer, wherein the electrode is electrically connected to the semiconductor film through a contact hole opened in the planarization layer, the barrier layer and the insulating layer;

a resin film formed over the barrier layer, wherein the resin film covers the contact hole and a portion of the electrode, and wherein a side surface of the resin film is rounded; and

a light emitting member formed on the electrode.

59. A display device according to claim 58, wherein the barrier layer comprises silicon nitride.

60. A display device according to claim 58, wherein the planarization layer comprises an inorganic insulating film formed by spin-coating.

61. A display device according to claim 58, wherein the planarization layer comprises an inorganic insulating film leveled by polishing.

62. A display device according to claim 58, wherein the insulating layer comprises an organic insulating film or an inorganic insulating film.

63. A display device according to claim 58, wherein the light emitting member comprises an organic compound or an inorganic compound.

64. A display device according to claim 58, wherein the display device is incorporated in at least one selected from the group consisting of a television, a digital camera, a personal computer, a mobile computer, an image reproducing apparatus, a goggle-type display, a video camera, and a cellular phone.
