Abstract

Multiple lighting apparatus coupled together to form a lighting network, in which operating power is efficiently provided throughout the network based on a distributed DC voltage or a distributed AC voltage. Based on various power driver configurations, each lighting apparatus incorporates one or more power drivers for one or more LED-based loads. In one example, a controlled predetermined power is provided to a load without requiring any feedback information from the load (i.e., without monitoring a load voltage and/or load current). In another example, a “feed-forward” power driver for an LED-based light sources combines the functionality of a DC-DC converter and a light source controller, and is configured to control the intensity of light generated by the light source based on modulating the average power delivered to the light source in a given time period, without monitoring and/or regulating the voltage or current provided to the light source. In various examples, significantly streamlined circuits having fewer components, higher overall power efficiencies, and smaller space requirements are realized.

Claims

1. A network, comprising:

a distributed DC voltage to provide a power source to the network;

at least first and second apparatus coupled to the distributed DC voltage, each of the first and second apparatus including;

at least one first LED configured to generate first radiation having a first spectrum; and

a first feed-forward driver coupled to the at least one first LED and configured to control a first intensity of the first radiation without monitoring or regulating a first voltage or a first current provided to the at least one first LED; and

at least one network controller, coupled to each of the first and second apparatus, to generate at least one radiation control signal that includes information representing the first intensity of the first radiation generated by each of the first and second apparatus.

The network of claim 1, wherein the at least one network controller is configured to generate the at least one radiation control signal such that the information includes first information representing the first intensity of the first radiation generated by the first apparatus, and second information representing the first intensity of the first radiation generated by the second apparatus.

3. The network of claim 2, wherein the at least one network controller is configured to generate the at least one radiation control signal such that the first information and the second information are provided independently of one another.

4. The network of claim 2, wherein the at least one network controller is configured to generate the at least one radiation control signal using a DMX protocol.

5. The network of claim 1, further comprising:

a full wave rectifier to receive an AC line voltage and output a rectified voltage; and

a power factor correction apparatus, coupled to the full wave rectifier and to each of the first and second apparatus, to receive the rectified voltage and output the distributed DC voltage.

6. The network of claim 5, wherein the distributed DC voltage is greater than 150 Volts DC.

7. The network of claim 6, wherein the distributed DC voltage is approximately 400 Volts DC.

8. The network of claim 1, wherein the first feed-forward driver comprises:

at least one energy transfer element to store input energy derived from the power source and to provide output energy to the at least one first LED; and

at least one switch coupled to the at least one energy transfer element to control at least the input energy stored to the at least one energy transfer element.

The network of claim 8, wherein the first feed-forward driver further comprises an energy transfer arrangement that includes the at least one energy transfer element, the at least one switch, and at least one diode, wherein the energy transfer arrangement is configured as one of a buck converter, a boost converter, a buck-boost converter, a CUK converter, a flyback converter and a forward converter.

10. The network of claim 9, wherein the at least one energy transfer element includes one of a tapped inductor and a transformer having a non-unity turns ratio.

11. The network of claim 9, wherein each of the first and second apparatus further comprises at least one processor configured to receive the at least one radiation control signal generated by the at least one network controller, the at least one processor outputting at least a first driver signal to control the at least one switch of the first feed-forward driver.

12. The network of claim 11, wherein the at least one processor is an addressable device.

13. The network of claim 12, wherein the at least one network controller is configured to generate the at least one radiation control signal using a DMX protocol.

14. The network of claim 11, wherein the at least one processor is configured to control at least one of a frequency and a duty cycle of the first driver signal so as to control the first intensity.

15. The network of claim 14, wherein the at least one processor is configured to control at least one of the frequency and the duty cycle of the first driver signal based on the distributed DC voltage and the at least one radiation control signal.

16. The network of claim 14, wherein the at least one processor is configured to control the frequency of the first driver signal by controllably varying an effective frequency of the first driver signal using a pulse number modulation technique.

17. The network of claim 14, wherein each of the first and second apparatus further comprises:

at least one second LED configured to generate second radiation having a second spectrum different from the first spectrum; and

a second feed-forward driver coupled to the at least one second LED and configured to control a second intensity of the second radiation without monitoring or regulating a second voltage or a second current provided to the at least one second LED.

18. The network of claim 17, wherein the at least one network controller is configured to generate the at least one radiation control signal such that the information includes:

first information representing the first intensity of the first radiation and the second intensity of the second radiation generated by the first apparatus; and

second information representing the first intensity of the first radiation and the second intensity of the second radiation generated by the second apparatus,

and wherein the first and second feed-forward drivers of each of the first and second apparatus are configured to respectively control the first and second intensities generated by each of the first and second apparatus based on a corresponding one of the first information and the second information.

19. The network of claim 18, further comprising:

a full wave rectifier to receive an AC line voltage and output a rectified voltage; and

a power factor correction apparatus, coupled to the full wave rectifier and to the first and second feed-forward drivers, to receive the rectified voltage and output the distributed DC voltage.

20. A method, comprising acts of:

A) distributing a DC supply voltage to at least first and second apparatus to provide a power source;

B) in each of the first and second apparatus, generating first radiation having a first spectrum from at least one first LED;

C) transmitting to both the first and second apparatus at least one radiation control signal that includes information representing a first intensity of the first radiation generated by each of the first and second apparatus; and

D) in each of the first and second apparatus, controlling the first intensity of the first radiation, in response to the at least one radiation control signal, without monitoring or regulating a first voltage or a first current provided to the at least one first LED.

21. The method of claim 20, wherein the act C) includes an act of:

C1) generating the at least one radiation control signal such that the information includes first information representing the first intensity of the first radiation generated by the first apparatus, and second information representing the first intensity of the first radiation generated by the second apparatus.

22. The method of claim 21, wherein the act C1) includes an act of:

generating the at least one radiation control signal such that the first information and the second information are provided independently of one another.

23. The method of claim 21, wherein the act C1) includes an act of:

generating the at least one radiation control signal using a DMX protocol.

24. The method of claim 20, further comprising acts of:

rectifying an AC line voltage to provide a rectified voltage;

controlling a current drawn from the rectified voltage to provide a power factor correction; and

generating the distributed DC supply voltage based on the rectified voltage.

25. The method of claim 20, wherein the act D) comprises acts of:

storing input energy derived from the power source to at least on energy transfer element;

providing output energy from the at least one energy transfer element to the at least one first LED; and

controlling at least the input energy stored to the at least one energy transfer element via at least one switch coupled to the at least one energy transfer element.

26. The method of claim 25, wherein the at least one energy transfer element and the at least one switch form part of an energy transfer arrangement that includes the at least one energy transfer element, the at least one switch, and at least one diode, and wherein the energy transfer arrangement is configured as one of a buck converter, a boost converter, a buck-boost converter, a CUK converter, a flyback converter and a forward converter.

27. The method of claim 26, wherein the at least one energy transfer element includes one of a tapped inductor and a transformer having a non-unity turns ratio.

28. The method of claim 26, wherein the act D) comprises an act of:

D1) generating at least a first driver signal to control the at least one switch, based at least in part on the at least one radiation control signal.

29. The method of claim 28, wherein the act D1) comprises an act of:

D2) controlling at least one of a frequency and a duty cycle of the first driver signal so as to control the first intensity.

30. The method of claim 29, wherein the act D2) comprises an act of:

controlling at least one of the frequency and the duty cycle of the first driver signal based on the distributed DC supply voltage and the at least one radiation control signal.

31. The method of claim 29, wherein the act D2) comprises an act of:

controlling the frequency of the first driver signal by controllably varying an effective frequency of the first driver signal using a pulse number modulation technique.

32. The method of claim 29, further comprising acts of:

E) in each of the first and second apparatus, generating second radiation having a second spectrum different from the first spectrum from at least one second LED; and

F) in each of the first and second apparatus, controlling the second intensity of the second radiation without monitoring or regulating a second voltage or a second current provided to the at least one second LED.

33. The method of claim 32, wherein the act C) comprises an act of:

generating the at least one radiation control signal such that the information includes;

first information representing the first intensity of the first radiation and the second intensity of the second radiation generated by the first apparatus; and

second information representing the first intensity of the first radiation and the second intensity of the second radiation generated by the second apparatus,

and wherein the method further includes an act of;

respectively controlling the first and second intensities generated by each of the first and second apparatus based on a corresponding one of the first information and the second information.

34. The method of claim 33, further comprising:

rectifying an AC line voltage to provide a rectified voltage;

controlling a current drawn from the rectified voltage to provide power factor correction; and

generating the distributed DC supply voltage based on the rectified voltage.

35. A network, comprising:

a distributed AC line voltage;

at least first and second apparatus coupled to the distributed AC line voltage, each of the first and second apparatus including;

at least one first LED configured to generate first radiation having a first spectrum; and

a first feed-forward driver coupled to the at least one first LED and configured to control a first intensity of the first radiation without monitoring or regulating a first voltage or a first current provided to the at least one first LED; and

at least one network controller, coupled to each of the first and second apparatus, to generate at least one radiation control signal that includes information representing the first intensity of the first radiation generated by each of the first and second apparatus.

36. The network of claim 35, wherein the at least one network controller is configured to generate the at least one radiation control signal such that the information includes first information representing the first intensity of the first radiation generated by the first apparatus, and second information representing the first intensity of the first radiation generated by the second apparatus.

37. The network of claim 36, wherein the at least one network controller is configured to generate the at least one radiation control signal such that the first information and the second information are provided independently of one another.

38. The network of claim 36, wherein the at least one network controller is configured to generate the at least one radiation control signal using a DMX protocol.

39. The network of claim 35, wherein each of the first and second apparatus further comprises a full wave rectifier to receive the distributed AC line voltage and output a rectified DC supply voltage to provide a power source for each of the first and second apparatus.

40. The network of claim 39, wherein each of the first and second apparatus further comprises a power factor correction apparatus, coupled to the full wave rectifier, to provide a power factor correction for each of the first and second apparatus.

41. The network of claim 39, wherein the first feed-forward driver comprises:

at least one energy transfer element to store input energy derived from the power source and to provide output energy to the at least one first LED; and

at least one switch coupled to the at least one energy transfer element to control at least the input energy stored to the at least one energy transfer element.

42. The network of claim 41, wherein the first feed-forward driver further comprises an energy transfer arrangement that includes the at least one energy transfer element, the at least one switch, and at least one diode, wherein the energy transfer arrangement is configured as one of a buck converter, a boost converter, a buck-boost converter, a CUK converter, a flyback converter and a forward converter.

43. The network of claim 42, wherein the at least one energy transfer element includes one of a tapped inductor and a transformer having a non-unity turns ratio.

44. The network of claim 42, wherein each of the first and second apparatus further comprises at least one processor configured to receive the at least one radiation control signal generated by the at least one network controller, the at least one processor outputting at least a first driver signal to control the at least one switch of the first feed-forward driver.

45. The network of claim 44, wherein the at least one processor is an addressable device.

46. The network of claim 45, wherein the at least one network controller is configured to generate the at least one radiation control signal using a DMX protocol.

47. The network of claim 44, wherein the at least one processor is configured to control at least one of a frequency and a duty cycle of the first driver signal so as to control the first intensity.

48. The network of claim 47, wherein the at least one processor is configured to control at least one of the frequency and the duty cycle of the first driver signal based on the rectified DC supply voltage and the at least one radiation control signal.

49. The network of claim 47, wherein the at least one processor is configured to control the frequency of the first driver signal by controllably varying an effective frequency of the first driver signal using a pulse number modulation technique.

50. The network of claim 47, wherein each of the first and second apparatus further comprises:

at least one second LED configured to generate second radiation having a second spectrum different from the first spectrum; and

a second feed-forward driver coupled to the at least one second LED and configured to control a second intensity of the second radiation without monitoring or regulating a second voltage or a second current provided to the at least one second LED.

51. The network of claim 50, wherein the at least one network controller is configured to generate the at least one radiation control signal such that the information includes:

first information representing the first intensity of the first radiation and the second intensity of the second radiation generated by the first apparatus; and

second information representing the first intensity of the first radiation and the second intensity of the second radiation generated by the second apparatus,

and wherein the first and second feed-forward drivers of each of the first and second apparatus are configured to respectively control the first and second intensities generated by each of the first and second apparatus based on a corresponding one of the first information and the second information.

52. A method, comprising acts of:

A) distributing an AC line voltage to at least first and second apparatus;

B) in each of the first and second apparatus, generating first radiation having a first spectrum from at least one first LED;

C) transmitting to both the first and second apparatus at least one radiation control signal that includes information representing a first intensity of the first radiation generated by each of the first and second apparatus; and

D) in each of the first and second apparatus, controlling the first intensity of the first radiation, in response to the at least one radiation control signal, without monitoring or regulating a first voltage or a first current provided to the at least one first LED.

53. The method of claim 52, wherein the act C) includes an act of:

C1) generating the at least one radiation control signal such that the information includes first information representing the first intensity of the first radiation generated by the first apparatus, and second information representing the first intensity of the first radiation generated by the second apparatus.

54. The method of claim 53, wherein the act C1) includes an act of:

generating the at least one radiation control signal such that the first information and the second information are provided independently of one another.

55. The method of claim 53, wherein the act C1) includes an act of:

generating the at least one radiation control signal using a DMX protocol.

56. The method of claim 52, further comprising an act of:

in each of the first and second apparatus, rectifying the distributed AC line voltage to provide a power source having a rectified DC supply voltage.

57. The method of claim 56, further comprising an act of:

controlling a current drawn from the rectified DC supply voltage to provide a power factor correction.

58. The method of claim 56, wherein the act D) comprises acts of:

storing input energy derived from the power source to at least on energy transfer element;

providing output energy from the at least one energy transfer element to the at least one first LED; and

controlling at least the input energy stored to the at least one energy transfer element via at least one switch coupled to the at least one energy transfer element.

59. The method of claim 58, wherein the at least one energy transfer element and the at least one switch form part of an energy transfer arrangement that includes the at least one energy transfer element, the at least one switch, and at least one diode, and wherein the energy transfer arrangement is configured as one of a buck converter, a boost converter, a buck-boost converter, a CUK converter, a flyback converter and a forward converter.

60. The method of claim 59, wherein the at least one energy transfer element includes one of a tapped inductor and a transformer having a non-unity turns ratio.

61. The method of claim 59, wherein the act D) comprises an act of:

D1) generating at least a first driver signal to control the at least one switch, based at least in part on the at least one radiation control signal.

62. The method of claim 61, wherein the act D1) comprises an act of:

D2) controlling at least one of a frequency and a duty cycle of the first driver signal so as to control the first intensity.

63. The method of claim 62, wherein the act D2) comprises an act of:

controlling at least one of the frequency and the duty cycle of the first driver signal based on the rectified DC supply voltage and the at least one radiation control signal.

64. The method of claim 62, wherein the act D2) comprises an act of:

controlling the frequency of the first driver signal by controllably varying an effective frequency of the first driver signal using a pulse number modulation technique.

65. The method of claim 62, further comprising acts of:

E) in each of the first and second apparatus, generating second radiation having a second spectrum different from the first spectrum from at least one second LED; and

F) in each of the first and second apparatus, controlling the second intensity of the second radiation without monitoring or regulating a second voltage or a second current provided to the at least one second LED.

66. The method of claim 65, wherein the act C) comprises an act of:

generating the at least one radiation control signal such that the information includes;

first information representing the first intensity of the first radiation and the second intensity of the second radiation generated by the first apparatus; and

second information representing the first intensity of the first radiation and the second intensity of the second radiation generated by the second apparatus,

and wherein the method further includes an act of;

respectively controlling the first and second intensities generated by each of the first and second radiation apparatus based on a corresponding one of the first information and the second information.
