Abstract

A suture anchor has a pin that is disposed transversely within the suture anchor, over which one or more strands of suture is looped. The anchor body is threaded and has a tapered distal portion. The proximal end portion of the suture anchor body has a hexagonally shaped opening to accept a hexagonal drive head. The peripheral surface defining hexagonally shaped opening is rounded and smooth to prevent abrading sutures placed in contact therewith.

Claims

1. A suture anchor comprising:

an anchor body having a central bore extending from an opening at the proximal end of the anchor body through a portion of the length thereof; and

a member disposed transversely in the central bore and having ends that extend across the bore to the anchor body.

2. The suture anchor according to claim 1, wherein the anchor body is made of a metal material.

3. The suture anchor according to claim 1, wherein the member is a transverse pin is made of a metal material.

4. The suture anchor according to claim 1, wherein the anchor body includes two apertures in the anchor body for supporting the member at its ends.

5. The suture anchor according to claim 1, further comprising at least one strand of suture looped around the member.

6. The suture anchor according to claim 1, wherein the anchor body is tapered.

7. The suture anchor according to claim 6, wherein the anchor body is tapered to a substantially narrow point.

8. The suture anchor according to claim 1, wherein the anchor body is threaded.

9. The suture anchor according to claim 1, wherein the anchor body is self-tapping.

10. The suture anchor according to claim 1, wherein the central bore has a cross-sectional shape so as to accommodate a driver head for driving the suture anchor.

11. A suture anchor assembly for attachment of tissue to bone, the suture anchor assembly comprising:

a suture anchor comprising an anchor body having a distal end, a proximal end, a longitudinal axis, an outer surface and a suture passage located at the proximal end and extending partially through the anchor body;

a member disposed transversely in the suture passage and having ends connected to the anchor body; and

at least one suture strand looped around the member and having ends that extend through the suture passage and out the proximal end of the anchor body.

12. The suture anchor assembly of claim 11, wherein the member is disposed substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the anchor body.

13. The suture anchor assembly of claim 11, wherein the member is disposed at an angle with respect to the longitudinal axis of the anchor body.

14. The suture anchor assembly of claim 13, wherein the member is disposed at an angle other than a ninety degree angle with the longitudinal axis of the anchor body.

15. The suture anchor assembly of claim 11, wherein the anchor body comprises a plurality of thread flights extending from the outer surface of the anchor body.

16. The suture anchor assembly of claim 11, wherein the anchor body includes two apertures in the anchor body for supporting the member.
