Abstract

A diagnostic context can be associated with a request and the diagnostic context can be used for determining whether to do diagnosis functions at predetermined points.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

receiving a request into server software;

associating a diagnostic context with the request; and

at a later diagnosis point of the server software, using the diagnostic context to determine whether to do a diagnosis function.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising executing the diagnosis function.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the diagnostic context is compared to a mask to determine whether to do the diagnosis function.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the diagnostic context includes a dye vector.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein the dye vector is ANDed with a mask and then compared to the mask to determine whether to do the diagnosis function.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the diagnostic function is a counter.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the diagnostic function includes saving arguments.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the diagnostic function is part of a delegated monitor.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein diagnostic context remains with the request across different servers.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the diagnostic context is associated with the request using a work area protocol.

13. The software of claim 1, wherein the diagnostic context is compared to a mask to determine whether to do the diagnosis function.

11. Software comprising:

code to associate a diagnostic context with a request into server software; and

code to use the diagnostic context to determine whether to do a diagnosis function at a later diagnosis point of the server software.

12. The software of claim 11, further comprising executing the diagnosis function.

14. The software of claim 11, wherein the diagnostic context includes a dye vector.

15. The software of claim 14, wherein the dye vector is ANDed with a mask and then compared to the mask to determine whether to do the diagnosis function.

16. The software of claim 11, wherein the diagnostic function is a counter.

17. The software of claim 11, wherein the diagnostic function includes saving arguments.

18. The software of claim 11, wherein the diagnostic function is part of a delegated monitor.

19. The software of claim 11, wherein diagnostic context remains with the request across different servers.

20. The software of claim 11, wherein the diagnostic context is associated with the request using a work area protocol.

21. A method comprising:

receiving a request into server software;

associating a diagnostic context with the request; and

storing the diagnostic context information for the request along with the diagnosis data for the request.
