Abstract

A method for enhancing digital video recorder television advertising viewership provides a method wherein the first or last number of seconds of a commercial break are carefully authored to provide a “teaser” to entice the viewer to watch multiple commercials during the commercial break instead of skipping the commercial break using the fast forward or jump functions of the DVR. A bookending function displays an advertisement before and/or after a program that has been recorded on the DVR'"'"'s storage device is played to the viewer. The viewer selects a recorded program from the DVR'"'"'s storage device to playback. Before the program is played back, an advertisement is retrieved from the storage device and is displayed before the program is run. Another advertisement is retrieved and then played after the program is over.

Claims

1. A method for enhancing viewership of television advertisements in a digital video recorder (DVR) environment, comprising the steps of:

recording television program material onto a storage device communicatively coupled to the DVR;

receiving advertisements at the DVR from an external source;

storing the advertisements on the storage device;

selecting an advertisement from the storage device;

playing back the television program material from the storage device to a viewer; and

wherein the playing back step displays the advertisement to the viewer before and/or after the television program material is played back to the viewer.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the selecting step selects the advertisement based on the viewer'"'"'s viewing preferences and/or personal data.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the selecting step selects an advertisement to be displayed after the television program material is played back to the viewer that is different than the advertisement displayed before the television program material is played back to the viewer.

4. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

requesting ads from the external source for the viewer'"'"'s target audience.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the receiving step further comprises:

recording groups of ads from an input source.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein the recorded groups of ads are selected for the viewer'"'"'s target audience.

7. An apparatus for enhancing viewership of television advertisements in a digital video recorder (DVR) environment, comprising:

a recording module, wherein the recording module records television program material onto a storage device communicatively coupled to the DVR;

a receiving module, wherein the receiving module receives advertisements at the DVR from an external source;

a storage module, wherein the storage module stores the advertisements on the storage device;

a selection module, wherein the selection module selects an advertisement from the storage device;

a playback module, wherein the playback module plays back the television program material from the storage device to a viewer; and

wherein the playback module displays the advertisement to the viewer before and/or after the television program material is played back to the viewer.

8. The apparatus of claim 7, wherein the selection module selects the advertisement based on the viewer'"'"'s viewing preferences and/or personal data.

9. The apparatus of claim 7, wherein the selection module selects an advertisement to be displayed after the television program material is played back to the viewer that is different than the advertisement displayed before the television program material is played back to the viewer.

10. The apparatus of claim 7, further comprising:

a requesting module, wherein the requesting module requests ads from the external source for the viewer'"'"'s target audience.

11. The apparatus of claim 7, wherein the receiving module further comprises:

an ad recording module, wherein the ad recording module records groups of ads from an input source.

12. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein the recorded groups of ads are selected for the viewer'"'"'s target audience.

13. A program storage medium readable by a computer, tangibly embodying a program of instructions executable by the computer to perform method steps for enhancing viewership of television advertisements in a digital video recorder (DVR) environment, comprising the steps of:

recording television program material onto a storage device communicatively coupled to the DVR;

receiving advertisements at the DVR from an external source;

storing the advertisements on the storage device;

selecting an advertisement from the storage device;

playing back the television program material from the storage device to a viewer; and

wherein the playing back step displays the advertisement to the viewer before and/or after the television program material is played back to the viewer.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the selecting step selects the advertisement based on the viewer'"'"'s viewing preferences and/or personal data.

15. The method of claim 13, wherein the selecting step selects an advertisement to be displayed after the television program material is played back to the viewer that is different than the advertisement displayed before the television program material is played back to the viewer.

16. The method of claim 13, further comprising:

17. The method of claim 13, wherein the receiving step further comprises:

recording groups of ads from an input source.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein the recorded groups of ads are selected for the viewer'"'"'s target audience.
