Abstract

An apparatus, system and method of programming a medical therapy in a medical device are provided. Generally, the medical device 10 has a controller 12, a memory 14, a processor 16 and an input device 18. The memory 14 is preloaded with at least one of a plurality of patient profiles and condition profiles. The memory 14 is further preloaded with an associated medication therapy for a plurality of the profiles. The input device 18 receives profile data 90, 91 comprising at least one of a patient profile data and a condition profile data for a specific patient, and the processor 16 processes the received profile data 100 and provides as output one of the preloaded medication therapies based on the processed profile data 102.

Claims

1. A controller for a programmable medical pump, comprising a memory having at least one of a plurality of preloaded patient profiles and condition profiles, said memory further having an associated preloaded medication therapy for said at least one of said plurality of said profiles;

an input device for receiving profile data comprising at least one of patient profile data and condition profile data correspondable to a specific patient; and

, a processor for providing at least one of said preloaded medication therapies based on said received profile data.

2. The controller of claim 1, wherein said processor has an algorithm that compares said received profile data to said preloaded profiles in memory to provide said medication therapy.

3. The controller of claim 1, wherein said processor selects said medication therapy from said preloaded medication therapies in memory corresponding to said preloaded profiles.

4. The controller of claim 1, wherein said memory further is preloaded with a plurality of medication profiles, and for each medication profile said memory further is preloaded with an associated medication therapy for a plurality of said medication profiles.

5. The controller of claim 1, wherein said preloaded patient profiles comprise data for at least one of a patient pain state, a chronologic age, an age group, and a gestational age.

6. The controller of claim 1, wherein said preloaded condition profiles comprise data for at least one of a medical condition and a medical disease state.

7. The controller of claim 4, wherein said preloaded medication profiles comprise data for at least one of a drug, a non-drug and a diluent.

8. The controller of claim 1, wherein said medication therapy provided by the processor comprises a medication type and delivery parameters.

9. The controller of claim 8, wherein said delivery parameters comprises at least one of a dose, a rate and a concentration.

10. The controller of claim 4, wherein said medication therapy comprises at least one of a dose, a rate, a concentration and a medication type.

11. The controller of claim 1, wherein said controller is an internal component of said medical pump.

12. The controller of claim 1, wherein said controller is a separate and distinct component from the medical pump.

13. The controller of claim 12, wherein said input device is a digital assistant.

14. The controller of claim 1, wherein said input device comprises a receiver for receiving information from an information identifier on a line set.

15. The controller of claim 14, wherein said information identifier contains information comprising at least one of a patient name, age, sex, weight, allergies, condition, medication name, medication type, medication concentration, medication amount, individual bolus volume, total bolus volume, bolus rate, dose, timing between bolus deliveries, maximum number of boluses, maximum number of boluses per unit time, loading dose volume, loading dose rate, loading dose time, maintenance rate, maintenance volume, maintenance time, maintenance dose, diluent volume, patient profile data and condition profile data.

16. A controller for a programmable medical pump, the controller having a medication delivery therapy of at least one of a bolus dose medication therapy and a loading dose medication regimen, comprising:

a memory preloaded with at least one of a plurality of patient profiles and condition profiles, and for each profile the memory further preloaded with at least one of a bolus medication therapy and a loading dose medication regimen;

an input device for receiving profile data comprising at least one of a patient data and a condition data for a specific patient; and

,

a processor for processing the received profile data and for providing as output at least one of the preloaded bolus medication therapies and preloaded loading dose medication therapies based on the processed profile data.

17. The controller for the programmable medical pump of claim 16, wherein the processor has an algorithm that compares the received profile data to the preloaded profiles to provide as output at least one the bolus medication therapies and loading dose medication therapies.

18. The controller for the programmable medical pump of claim 16, wherein the processor selects the medication therapy from the preloaded bolus medication therapies and loading dose medication therapies corresponding to the preloaded profiles.

19. The controller for the programmable medical pump of claim 16, wherein the memory further is preloaded with a plurality of medication profiles, and for each medication profile the memory further is preloaded with an associated medication therapy for a plurality of the medication profiles.

20. The controller for the programmable medical pump of claim 16, wherein the preloaded patient profiles comprise data for at least one of a patient pain state, a chronologic age, an age group, and a gestational age.

21. The controller for the programmable medical pump of claim 16, wherein the preloaded condition profiles comprise data for at least one of a medical condition and a medical disease state.

22. The controller for the programmable medical pump of claim 19, wherein the preloaded medication profiles comprise data for at least one of a drug, a non-drug and a diluent.

23. The controller for the programmable medical pump of claim 16, wherein the medication therapy provided by the processor comprises a medication type and delivery parameters.

24. The controller for the programmable medical pump of claim 23, wherein the delivery parameters comprises at least one of a dose, a rate and a concentration.

25. The controller for the programmable medical pump of claim 23, wherein the delivery parameters comprise at least one of a medication type, a medication concentration, a medication amount, an individual bolus volume, a total bolus volume, a bolus rate and a timing between bolus deliveries.

26. The controller for the programmable medical pump of claim 23, wherein the delivery parameters comprise at least one of a medication type, a medication concentration, a loading dose volume, a loading dose rate, a loading dose time, a maintenance rate, a maintenance volume, a maintenance time, a maintenance dose, and a diluent volume.

27. The controller for the programmable medical pump of claim 16, wherein the programmable medical pump has a plurality of pumping channels, and wherein each of the pumping channels is independently programmable for delivering bolus dose medication therapies and loading dose medication therapies.

28. The controller for the programmable medical pump of claim 19, wherein the medication therapy comprises at least one of a dose, a rate, a concentration and a medication type.

29. The controller for the programmable medical pump of claim 16, wherein the controller is an internal component of the medical pump.

30. The controller for the programmable medical pump of claim 16, wherein the controller is a separate and distinct component from the medical pump.

31. The controller for the programmable medical pump of claim 30, wherein the controller is a digital assistant.

32. The controller for the programmable medical pump of claim 16, wherein the input device receives a second set of profile data comprising at least one of a patient data and a condition data for a specific patient, and wherein the processor processes the second set of received profile data and provides as output for the second set of profile data at least one of the preloaded bolus medication therapies and preloaded loading dose medication therapies based on the processed second set of profile data.

33. A method of programming a medical therapy in a controller, the controller having a memory, a processor and an input device, comprising the steps of:

preloading the memory with at least one of a plurality of patient profiles and condition profiles, and with an associated medication therapy for a plurality of the profiles;

receiving profile data comprising at least one of a patient profile data and a condition profile data for a specific patient; and

,

processing the received profile data and for providing as output one of the preloaded medication therapies based on the processed profile data.

34. The method of claim 33, wherein the preloaded medication therapy comprises at least one of a medication type and preset delivery parameters, and further comprises the step of providing for changing at least one of the preset delivery parameters to develop a modified set of delivery parameters.

35. The method of claim 34, further comprising the steps of comparing the modified set of delivery parameters, and triggering an alarm when at least one of the delivery parameters of the modified set of delivery parameters is outside a parameter limit of the preloaded medication therapy ranges.

36. The method of claim 33, wherein the preloaded patient files comprise data for at least one of a patient pain state, a chronologic age, an age group and a gestational age.

37. The method of claim 33, wherein the preloaded condition profiles comprise data for at least one of a medical condition and a medical disease state.

38. The method of claim 34, wherein the delivery parameters comprise at least one of a dose, a rate and a concentration.

39. The method of claim 33, further comprising the step of preloading the memory with a plurality of medication profiles, and with an associated medication therapy for a plurality of the medication profiles.

40. The method of claim 39, wherein the medication therapy comprises at least one of a dose, a rate, a concentration and a medication type.

41. The method of claim 35, further comprising the step of providing an override for the alarm.

42. The method of claim 33, further comprising the step of receiving information from an information identifier on a line set.

43. The method of claim 42, wherein the information identifier contains information comprising at least one of a patient name, age, sex, weight, allergies, condition, medication name, medication type, medication concentration, medication amount, individual bolus volume, total bolus volume, bolus rate, dose, timing between bolus deliveries, maximum number of boluses, maximum number of boluses per unit time, loading dose volume, loading dose rate, loading dose time, maintenance rate, maintenance volume, maintenance time, maintenance dose, diluent volume, patient profile data and condition profile data.

44. A method of programming a medical therapy in a medical pump, comprising:

receiving a profile data comprising at least one of a patient profile data and a condition profile data for a specific patient;

providing a controller having a memory, a processor, and an input device, wherein the memory is capable of retrievably storing one or more medication therapies, wherein at least one of the medication therapies matches at least one of the received profile data;

comparing the profile data to the medication therapies stored in the memory at the processor; and

,

transmitting a medication therapy that matches the received profile data.

45. The method of claim 44, wherein stored medication therapies are therapies for at least one of a bolus dose medication therapy and a loading dose medication therapy

46. A method of pre-programming a medical therapy in a medical pump, comprising:

providing a controller having a memory, a processor, and an input device, wherein the memory is capable of retrievably storing one or more sets of patient profile parameters that describe at least one of medication type, patient profile and condition profile, and wherein the memory is capable of storing one or more medication therapies for at least one of a bolus dose medication therapy and a loading dose medication regimen;

receiving a set of profile data that describes at least one of medication type, patient profile and condition profile;

matching the received set of patient profile data to at least one of a bolus dose medication therapy and a loading dose medication therapy;

retrievably storing the received set of patient profile data in the memory; and

,

retrievably storing data in the memory, wherein the data reflects a correspondence between at least one set of patient profile data and at least one of a bolus dose medication therapy and a loading dose medication therapy.

47. A line set for interfacing with a medical control system for delivering a medicament, said medical control system comprising a processor and a memory for cooperative interaction with said processor, said memory comprising at least one of a plurality of patient profiles and condition profiles, and an associated medication therapy for said at least one of said plurality of profiles, said processor for selecting said associated medication therapy based on received profile data for a specific patient, said line set comprising a length of tube and a micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) element connected to said tube.

48. The line set of claim 47, wherein said medical control system further comprises an input device for receiving profile data comprising at least one of patient profile data and condition profile data for a specific patient.

51. The line set of claim 47, wherein said medical control system further comprises a central computer and a MEMS interface device, wherein said processor and said memory are located within said central computer, and wherein said central computer is located remote from said MEMS element and said MEMS interface device.

52. The line set of claim 51, wherein said MEMS interface device comprises means for controlling and interrogating the MEMS element.

53. The line set of claim 51, wherein said line set is disposable and wherein said MEMS interface device is reusable.

54. The line set of claim 47, wherein said medical control system further comprises an input device having a display for displaying information on the operation of said MEMS element, and having a reader for receiving an identifier.

55. A medical system for therapeutic delivery of a medicament comprising:

a disposable tube;

a disposable electromechanical pump element connected to said tube;

a pump interface device operably connectable to said pump element;

a processor; and

,

a memory for cooperative interaction with said processor, said memory comprising at least one of a plurality of patient profiles and condition profiles, and an associated medication therapy for said at least one of said plurality of profiles, said processor for selecting said associated medication therapy based on received profile data for a specific patient.

49. The line set of claim 57, wherein said processor and said memory are housed with a controller for controlling the operation of said MEMS element.

50. The line set of claim 49, wherein said controller has a display for displaying information.

56. The system of claim 55 further comprising a disposable reservoir attached to said disposable tube.

57. The system of claim 56 wherein said disposable reservoir comprises a valve which is structured to be controlled remotely.

58. A method for delivering a medicament, comprising the steps of providing a tube having a MEMS pump attached thereto, and said MEMS pump structured to operably communicate with a pump interface device, a processor, and a memory for cooperative interaction with said processor, said memory comprising at least one of a plurality of patient profiles and condition profiles, and an associated medication therapy for said at least one of said plurality of profiles, said processor for selecting said associated medication therapy based on received profile data for a specific patient;

and, activating said pump using said pump interface device to deliver said medicament according to said selected medication therapy.
