Abstract

A method, article of manufacture, and apparatus for managing an object are disclosed. In an embodiment, this comprises managing an object having content, in a system having a dynamic policy selector configured with at least one analytic policy applied to evaluate the content of the object. The object is associated to an information management policy. Classification levels may be used, in which classification levels are associated to information management policies and objects are associated with classification levels. Objects containing certain elements or related elements may be associated to form an information group, to which information management policies may be applied as a group. Storage pools may be used for managing objects with similar classification levels or information protection policies.

Claims

1. A method of managing an object having content and associated metadata, in an information management system using at least one classification level, wherein each classification level is associated with at least one information management policy, the method comprising:

evaluating the content of the object;

associating the object to a classification level; and

associating the object to metadata relating to the classification level.

2. The method as recited in claim 1, further comprising associating the object to metadata relating to at least one information management policy associated with the classification level.

3. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein the at least one information management policy includes an action to be performed relating to the object, and the method further comprises performing the action.

4. The method as recited in claim 3, wherein the at least one information management policy indicates at least one parameter selected from the group comprising performance, latency, bandwidth, security, availability, backup frequency, level of encryption, number of copies, compression, media type, data migration, retention period, or access control.

5. The method as recited in claim 4, wherein performing the action includes using the at least one parameter to perform the action on the object.

6. The method as recited in claim 1, further comprising determining a type of the object from the metadata.

7. The method as recited in claim 6, wherein evaluating the content of the object includes using the type of the object to evaluate the content of the object.

8. The method as recited in claim 1, further comprising changing the association of a classification level from the at least one information management policy to at least one other information management policy.

9. The method as recited in claim 8, wherein changing the association of the classification level is performed without changing the association information in the metadata associated with the object.

10. The method as recited in claim 1, further comprising determining a requested classification level from the metadata.

11. The method as recited in claim 10, further comprising determining an authorization level from the metadata associated with the requested classification level.

12. The method as recited in claim 11, further comprising overriding the requested classification level based on the authorization level.

13. The method as recited in claim 1, further comprising displaying to a user the classification level of at least one object.

14. The method as recited in claim 13, further comprising providing to the user an interface for changing the classification level of the at least one object.

15. The method as recited in claim 14, further comprising determining an authorization level of the user.

16. The method as recited in claim 15, further comprising overriding the requested classification level based on the user authorization level.

17. A system for managing an object having content and associated metadata, comprising a processor configured to:

evaluate the content of the object;

associate the object to a classification level, wherein the classification level is associated with at least one information management policy; and

associate the object to metadata relating to the classification level.

18. A computer program product for managing an object having content and associated metadata, in an information management system using at least one classification level, wherein each classification level is associated with at least one information management policy, comprising a computer usable medium having machine readable code embodied therein for:

evaluating the content of the object;

associating the object to a classification level; and

associating the object to metadata relating to the classification level.
