Abstract

An oral composition for oral cleansing, breath freshening, and anti-microbial benefits includes Magnolia Bark Extract in combination with a surface active agent. The effectiveness of Magnolia Bark Extract in inhibiting biofilm formation in the oral cavity is increased by a synergistic combination of the Magnolia Bark Extract with a surface active agent in an oral cavity delivery agent, such as chewing gum, a confectionary, a lozenge, a compressed tablet, and an edible film.

Claims

20. A chewing gum composition for freshening the breath of consumers, the composition comprising:

(a) a water soluble bulk portion;

(b) at least one flavoring agent;

(c) a gum base portion; and

(d) an effective amount of an antimicrobial agent comprising a synergistic ratio of Magnolia Bark Extract and surface active agent, wherein the synergistic ratio is at least about 1 part Magnolia Bark Extract to 1 part surface active agent.

21. The chewing gum composition of claim 20 wherein the surface active agent comprises a bactericidal surface active agent.

22. The chewing gum composition of claim 20 wherein the surface active agent comprises salt selected from the group consisting of a sodium salt and an ammonium salt.

23. The chewing gum composition of claim 20 wherein the surface active agent comprises an anionic surface active agent.

24. The chewing gum composition of claim 20 wherein the surface active agent comprises sodium lauryl sulfate.

25. The chewing gum composition of claim 20 wherein the synergistic ratio ranges from about 1 part Magnolia Bark Extract to 1 part surface active agent up to about 4 parts Magnolia Bark Extract to 1 part surface active agent.

26. The chewing gum composition of claim 20 wherein the surface active agent comprises sodium lauryl sulfate, wherein the synergistic ratio of Magnolia Bark Extract to sodium lauryl sulfate is about 2 parts Magnolia Bark Extract to 1 part sodium lauryl sulfate.

27. The chewing gum composition of claim 20 wherein the surface active agent comprises sodium brasslate.

28. The oral composition of claim 20 wherein the surface active agent comprises lecithin.

29. The oral composition of claim 20 wherein the surface active agent comprises glycerol triacetate.

30. The chewing gum composition of claim 20 wherein the surface active agent comprises sodium laureth sulfate.

31. The chewing gum composition of claim 20 wherein the surface active agent comprises a betaine derivative.

32. The chewing gum composition of claim 20 wherein the surface active agent comprises a fatty acid.

33. The chewing gum composition of claim 20 wherein the surface active agent comprises a fatty acid salt.

34. The chewing gum composition of claim 20 wherein the surface active agent comprises a monoglyceride.

35. The chewing gum composition of claim 20 wherein the surface active agent comprises a triglyceride.

36. The chewing gum composition of claim 20 wherein the surface active agent comprises about 0.001% to about 2.0% of the composition.

37. A confectionary composition for freshening the breath of consumers, the composition comprising:

(a) at least one of a sugar or a sugar alcohol; and

(b) an effective amount of an antimicrobial agent comprising a synergistic ratio of Magnolia Bark Extract and surface active agent, wherein the synergistic ratio is at least about 1 part Magnolia Bark Extract to 1 part surface active agent.

38. The confectionary composition of claim 37 wherein the surface active agent comprises a bactericidal surface active agent.

39. The confectionary composition of claim 37 wherein the surface active agent comprises salt selected from the group consisting of a sodium salt and an ammonium salt.

40. The confectionary composition of claim 37 wherein the surface active agent comprises an anionic surface active agent.

41. The confectionary composition of claim 37 wherein the surface active agent comprises sodium lauryl sulfate.

42. The confectionary composition of claim 37 wherein the synergistic ratio ranges from about 1 part Magnolia Bark Extract to 1 part surface active agent up to about 4 parts Magnolia Bark Extract to 1 part surface active agent.

43. The confectionary composition of claim 37 wherein the surface active agent comprises sodium lauryl sulfate, wherein the synergistic ratio of Magnolia Bark Extract to sodium lauryl sulfate is about 2 parts Magnolia Bark Extract to 1 part sodium lauryl sulfate.

44. The confectionary composition of claim 37 wherein the surface active agent comprises sodium brasslate.

45. The confectionary composition of claim 37 wherein the surface active agent comprises lecithin.

46. The confectionary composition of claim 37 wherein the surface active agent comprises glycerol triacetate.

47. The confectionary composition of claim 37 wherein the surface active agent comprises sodium laureth sulfate.

48. The confectionary composition of claim 37 wherein the surface active agent comprises a betaine derivative.

49. The confectionary composition of claim 37 wherein the surface active agent comprises a fatty acid.

50. The confectionary composition of claim 37 wherein the surface active agent comprises a fatty acid salt.

51. The confectionary composition of claim 37 wherein the surface active agent comprises a monoglyceride.

52. The confectionary composition of claim 37 wherein the surface active agent comprises a triglyceride.

53. The confectionary composition of claim 37 wherein the surface active agent comprises about 0.001% to about 2.0% of the composition.

54. An edible film composition comprising:

(a) an effective amount of a film forming agent; and

(b) an effective amount of an antimicrobial agent comprising a synergistic ratio of Magnolia Bark Extract and surface active agent, wherein the synergistic ratio is at least about 1 part Magnolia Bark Extract to 1 part surface active agent.

55. The edible film composition of claim 54 wherein the surface active agent comprises a bactericidal surface active agent.

56. The edible film composition of claim 54 wherein the surface active agent comprises salt selected from the group consisting of a sodium salt and an ammonium salt.

57. The edible film composition of claim 54 wherein the surface active agent comprises an anionic surface active agent.

58. The edible film composition of claim 54 wherein the surface active agent comprises sodium lauryl sulfate.

59. The edible film composition of claim 54 wherein the synergistic ratio ranges from about 1 part Magnolia Bark Extract to 1 part surface active agent up to about 4 parts Magnolia Bark Extract to 1 part surface active agent.

60. The edible film composition of claim 54 wherein the surface active agent comprises sodium lauryl sulfate, wherein the synergistic ratio of Magnolia Bark Extract to sodium lauryl sulfate is about 2 parts Magnolia Bark Extract to 1 part sodium lauryl sulfate.

61. The edible film composition of claim 54 wherein the surface active agent comprises sodium brasslate.

62. The edible film composition of claim 54 wherein the surface active agent comprises lecithin.

63. The edible film composition of claim 54 wherein the surface active agent comprises glycerol triacetate.

64. The edible film composition of claim 54 wherein the surface active agent comprises sodium laureth sulfate.

65. The edible film composition of claim 54 wherein the surface active agent comprises a betaine derivative.

66. The edible film composition of claim 54 wherein the surface active agent comprises a fatty acid.

67. The edible film composition of claim 54 wherein the surface active agent comprises a fatty acid salt.

68. The edible film composition of claim 54 wherein the surface active agent comprises a monoglyceride.

69. The edible film composition of claim 54 wherein the surface active agent comprises a triglyceride.

70. The edible film composition of claim 54 wherein the surface active agent comprises about 0.001% to about 2.0% of the composition.

71. A method of oral cleansing by applying an oral composition to the oral cavity, wherein the oral composition comprises:

(a) an oral cavity delivery agent; and

(b) an effective amount of an antimicrobial agent comprising a synergistic ratio of Magnolia Bark Extract and surface active agent, wherein the synergistic ratio is at least about 1 part Magnolia Bark Extract to 1 part surface active agent.

72. An oral composition for freshening the breath of consumers of the oral composition, the oral composition comprising:

(a) an oral cavity delivery agent; and

(b) an antimicrobial agent comprising a synergistic ratio of Magnolia Bark Extract and a fatty acid.

73. The oral composition of claim 72 wherein the fatty acid comprises one or more of stearic acid, palmitic acid, oleic acid, or linoleic acid.

74. An oral composition for freshening the breath of consumers of the oral composition, the oral composition comprising:

(a) an oral cavity delivery agent; and

(b) an antimicrobial agent comprising a synergistic ratio of Magnolia Bark Extract and an emulsifying agent.

1. An oral composition for freshening the breath of consumers of the oral composition, the oral composition comprising:

(a) an oral cavity delivery agent; and

(b) an antimicrobial agent comprising a synergistic ratio of Magnolia Bark Extract and surface active agent, wherein the synergistic ratio is at least about 1 part Magnolia Bark Extract to 1 part surface active agent.

2. The oral composition of claim 1 wherein the surface active agent comprises a bactericidal surface active agent.

3. The oral composition of claim 1 wherein the surface active agent comprises a salt selected from the group consisting of a sodium salt and an ammonium salt.

4. The oral composition of claim 1 wherein the surface active agent comprises an anionic surface active agent.

5. The oral composition of claim 1 wherein the surface active agent comprises about 0.001% to about 2% sodium lauryl sulfate.

6. The oral composition of claim 1 wherein the synergistic ratio ranges from about 1 part Magnolia Bark Extract to 1 part surface active agent up to about 4 parts Magnolia Bark Extract to 1 part surface active agent.

7. The oral composition of claim 1 wherein the surface active agent comprises sodium lauryl sulfate.

8. The oral composition of claim 7 wherein the synergistic ratio of Magnolia Bark Extract to sodium lauryl sulfate is about 2 parts Magnolia Bark Extract to 1 part sodium lauryl sulfate.

9. The oral composition of claim 1 wherein the surface active agent comprises sodium brasslate.

10. The oral composition of claim 1 wherein the surface active agent comprises lecithin.

11. The oral composition of claim 1 wherein the surface active agent comprises glycerol triacetate.

12. The oral composition of claim 1 wherein the surface active agent comprises sodium laureth sulfate.

13. The oral composition of claim 1 wherein the surface active agent comprises a betaine derivative.

14. The oral composition of claim 1 wherein the surface active agent comprises a fatty acid.

15. The oral composition of claim 1 wherein the surface active agent comprises a fatty acid salt.

16. The oral composition of claim 1 wherein the surface active agent comprises a monoglyceride.

17. The oral composition of claim 1 wherein the surface active agent comprises a triglyceride.

18. The oral composition of claim 1 wherein the surface active agent comprises about 0.001% to about 1.0% of the oral composition.

19. The oral composition of claim 1 wherein the oral cavity delivery agent comprises one of a chewing gum, an edible film, a confectionary, a dentifrice, a lozenge and a mouth spray.

75. The oral composition of claim 74 wherein the emulsifying agent comprises a fatty acid.

76. The oral composition of claim 74 wherein the emulsifying agent comprises glycerol monostearate.

78. The oral composition of claim 74 wherein the emulsifying agent comprises glycerol triacetate.

79. The oral composition of claim 74 wherein the emulsifying agent comprises lecithin.

80. The oral composition of claim 74 wherein the emulsifying agent comprises at least one of monoglyceride and triglyceride.

81. The oral composition of claim 74 wherein the emulsifying agent comprises acetylated monoglyceride.

75-1. The oral composition of claim 74 wherein the emulsifying agent comprises at least one of stearic acid, palmitic acid, oleic acid, or linoleic acid.
