Abstract

Intraocular devices for use in and attached to the natural lens capsule of an eye are provided. The lens capsule may be maintained in a configuration to avoid post-operative changes that are deleterious to vision. Single or dual optic systems are provided, which may be accommodating. Combinations of devices to obtain dual optic systems are disclosed.

Claims

1. An intraocular device for maintaining separation of an anterior capsule and a posterior capsule of an evacuated lens capsule of an eye, the lens capsule further having a formix and an anterior capsule opening, comprising:

an optic; and

a plurality of deformable haptics attached to the optic at a proximate end of the haptics, the haptics having a selected response to a bending force so as to separate the anterior and the posterior capsule of the eye when the optic is disposed against the posterior capsule and the haptics are disposed in proximity to the posterior capsule, the formix and a portion of the anterior capsule.

2. The device of claim 1 wherein the haptics are formed by a plurality of spirals, the spirals comprising a flexible biocompatible material.

3. The device of claim 1 wherein the haptics are formed by a plurality of strips, the strips comprising a flexible biocompatible material.

4. The device of claim 1 wherein the haptics are formed from a plurality of strands or plates, the strands comprising a flexible biocompatible material.

5. The device of claim 1 wherein the haptics are formed from material varying in cross-sectional area or elastic properties along the haptics.

6. The device of claim 1 wherein the optic is a light-adjustable lens.

7. A method for implanting an intraocular lens in an evacuated lens capsule of an eye while maintaining separation of an anterior capsule and a posterior capsule of the evacuated lens capsule, comprising:

providing a device of claim 1;

inserting the device into the evacuated lens capsule; and

positioning the device such that the lens is disposed against the posterior capsule and the haptics are disposed in proximity to the posterior capsule, the formix and the anterior capsule.

43. A device for providing a dual optic lens system for an eye, comprising:

the device of claim 1;

and

the device of claim 15.

44. A device for providing a dual optic lens system for an eye, comprising:

the device of claim 1;

and

the device of claim 16.

45. A device for providing a dual optic lens system for an eye, comprising:

the device of claim 1;

and

the device of claim 24.

8. A device for maintaining the diameter of a capsulotomy, comprising:

a ring of flexible biocompatible material adapted to be placed in the capsulotomy, the ring comprising a body and a groove concentrically outside the body, the groove adapted to receive material at the periphery of the capsulotomy.

9. The device of claim 8 further comprising a split in the ring and a latch adapted to join the ring across the split.

10. The device of claim 8 wherein the body of the ring is formed with a cavity therewithin and further comprising a valve for inserting and maintaining a fluid in the cavity.

11. The device of claim 8 wherein the groove comprises a pair of continuous walls.

12. The device of claim 8 wherein the groove comprises a plurality of tabs extending radially outward from the body of the ring.

13. The device of claim 8 further comprising one or more eyelets, the eyelets being disposed on the ring and adapted for receiving a suture.

14. The device of claim 8 further comprising a membrane attached to and within the ring.

15. The device of claim 8 further comprising an optic disposed within the ring.

39. A device for providing a dual optic lens system for an eye, comprising:

the device of claim 30;

and

the device of claim 15.

16. A multi-part intraocular lens, comprising:

a ring of flexible biocompatible material adapted to be placed in a capsulotomy in an eye, the ring comprising a body and a groove concentrically outside the body, the groove adapted to receive material at the periphery of the capsulotomy;

a plurality of cleats, the cleats disposed around the periphery of the ring; and

a lens body, the lens body comprising an optic and a plurality of apertures, the apertures being adapted and disposed so as to be placed around the cleats.

17. The device of claim 16 further comprising a split in the ring and a latch adapted to join the ring across the split.

18. The device of claim 16 wherein the body of the ring is formed with a cavity therewithin and further comprising a valve for inserting and maintaining a fluid in the cavity.

19. The device of claim 16 wherein the groove comprises a pair of continuous walls.

20. The device of claim 16 wherein the groove comprises a plurality of tabs extending radially outward from the body of the ring.

21. The device of claim 16 further comprising one or more eyelets, the eyelets being disposed on the ring and adapted for receiving a suture.

40. A device for providing a dual optic lens system for an eye, comprising:

the device of claim 30;

and

the device of claim 16.

22. An intraocular device, comprising:

a ring of flexible biocompatible material adapted to be placed in a capsulotomy, the ring comprising a body and a groove concentrically outside the body, the groove adapted to receive material at the periphery of the capsulotomy; and

a plurality of deformable haptics rigidly attached to the ring at a proximate end of the haptics, the haptics having a selected response to a bending force so as to separate an anterior and a posterior capsule of an eye when the haptics are disposed in proximity to the anterior capsule, the formix and the a portion of the posterior capsule.

23. The device of claim 22 further comprising a membrane joined to the ring and extending within the ring.

24. The device of claim 22 further comprising an optic disposed within the ring.

25. The device of claim 22 further comprising a split in the ring and a latch adapted to join the ring across the split.

26. The device of claim 22 wherein the body of the ring is formed with a cavity therewithin and further comprising a valve for inserting and maintaining a fluid in the cavity.

27. The device of claim 22 wherein the groove comprises a pair of continuous walls.

28. The device of claim 22 wherein the groove comprises a plurality of tabs extending radially outward from the body of the ring.

29. The device of claim 22 further comprising one or more eyelets, the eyelets being disposed on the ring and adapted for receiving a suture.

30. An intraocular device for implantation in an evacuated lens capsule of an eye and retaining an operable optic within the lens capsule, comprising:

a flexible bag adapted to be disposed within the lens capsule, the bag having a valve for injecting a liquid or gel for inflating the bag and an optic disposed within the bag, the optic being fixed to the bag and disposed so as to be operable when the bag is inflated.

31. The device of claim 30 wherein the optic is a light-adjustable lens.

32. The device of claim 30 wherein the liquid or gel is selected for refractive index properties.

41. A device for providing a dual optic lens system for an eye, comprising:

the device of claim 30;

and

the device of claim 35.

42. A device for providing a dual optic lens system for an eye, comprising:

the device of claim 30;

and

the device of claim 38.

33. A device to be placed in an anterior capsule opening of an eye, the anterior capsule opening having a periphery, comprising:

a ring and a membrane therewithin, the ring being adapted to form a sealing area between the ring and a surface of the anterior capsule;

a collar extending from the ring so as to receive a segment of the anterior capsule around the periphery of the anterior capsule opening; and

a tissue adhesive between the collar and the anterior capsule.

34. The device of claim 33 further comprising a colorant in the ring.

35. The device of claim 33 further comprising an optic within the ring.

36. A device to be placed in an anterior capsule opening of an eye, the anterior capsule opening having a periphery, comprising:

a ring and a membrane therewithin, the ring being adapted to form a sealing area between the ring and a surface of the anterior capsule, the sealing area being adapted for fluid communication with a conduit extending outside the capsule; and

a pinching arrangement in the ring to retain the anterior capsule within the ring after the sealing area is formed and the anterior capsule is forced into the pinching arrangement.

37. The device of claim 36 further comprising a colorant in the ring.

38. The device of claim 36 further comprising an optic within the ring.
