Abstract

The present invention provides an improved bonding system including an adhesion promoter that may be used to help adhesively bond two or more components together. The preferred use of the present adhesion promoter is in a transportation vehicle (e.g., automobile), and more particularly in an engine assembly for use in such vehicles. The present invention includes a bonded automobile engine assembly including at least one plastic component, an adhesive that bonds the plastic component to at least one separate component, and an adhesion promoter between the adhesive and the plastic component. Fasteners for attaching components are optionally employed. In one specific example, an intake manifold including a plastic component is bonded to an engine assembly.

Claims

1. A bonded automotive vehicle assembly, comprising:

at least one plastic component;

an adhesive for bonding the plastic component to at least one different component; and

an adhesion promoter between the adhesive and the plastic component, comprising at least;

a polyhydroxy compound; and

a hydroxy group containing unsaturated monomer.

2. The assembly of claim 1 wherein the polyhydroxy compound is a difunctional aromatic compound.

3. The assembly of claims 1 or 2, wherein the difuctional aromatic compound is dihydroxy phenol.

4. The assembly of claims 1-3, wherein the dihydroxy phenol is resorcinol.

5. The assembly of claims 1-4, wherein the hydroxy group contains unsaturated monomer is a (meth)acrylic monomer.

6. The assembly of claims 1-5, wherein the (meth)acrylic monomer is a hydroxy functional (meth)acrylic monomer.

7. The assembly of claims 1-6, wherein the hydroxy functional (meth)acrylic monomer is a hydroxyalkyl (meth)acrylic monomer.

8. The assembly of claims 1-7, wherein the hydroxyalkyl (meth)acrylic monomer comprise a hydroxyethyl(meth)acrylic monomer.

9. The assembly of claims 1-8, wherein the ratio of polyhydroxy compound to hydroxy group containing unsaturated monomer is between about 7:

1 and about 1;

10. The assembly of claims 1-9, wherein the ratio of polyhydroxy compound to hydroxy group containing unsaturated monomer is between about 3:

1 and about 4;

11. The assembly of claims 1-10, wherein the plastic component comprises nylon.

12. The assembly of claims 1-11, wherein the nylon comprises reinforcement.

13. The assembly of claims 1-12, wherein the adhesive comprises an acrylic resin.

14. The assembly of claims 1-12, wherein the adhesive comprises an epoxy adhesive.

15. A method of manufacturing a bonded automotive vehicle engine assembly, comprising:

combining a polyhydroxy compound and a hydroxy group containing unsaturated monomer in a solvent to form an adhesion promoter;

applying the adhesion promoter to at least one plastic component; and

bonding the plastic component to a second component with an adhesive.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein the solvent is a hydrocarbon.

17. The method of claims 15 or 16, wherein the hydrocarbon is an alcohol.

18. The method of claims 15-17, wherein the solvent is anhydrous ethanol.

19. The method of claims 15-18, wherein the polyhydroxy compound is resorcinol.

20. The method of claims 15-19, wherein the hydroxyl group containing unsaturated monomer is hydroxyethy (meth)acrylic monomer.

21. The method of claims 15-20, wherein the combining step comprises combining between about 10 and about 70 wt % of resorcinol, between about 10 and about 40 wt % of hydroxyethyl (meth)acrylic monomer and between about 20 and about 50 wt % of anhydrous ethanol.

22. The method of claims 15-21, wherein the bonding step comprises applying an epoxy adhesive to the plastic component.

23. The method of claims 15-22, wherein the bonding step comprises applying an acrylic resin to the plastic component.

24. The method of claims 15-23, wherein the plastic component comprises nylon.

25. The method of claims 15-24, wherein the nylon comprises reinforcement.

26. A bonded automotive vehicle engine assembly, comprising:

at least one plastic intake manifold component;

an adhesive for bonding the intake manifold component to at least one different component; and

an adhesion promoter between the adhesive and the plastic intake manifold component, comprising at least;

resorcinol; and

hydroxyethyl (meth)acrylic monomer.
