Abstract

A system and method for determining whether a flick gesture has occurred is described. A flick gesture is a simple gesture that may be easily detected and is characterized by minimal interference with other applications or gestures.

Claims

1. A process for recognizing a gesture created by a pointing device comprising the step of:

determining from movement of said pointing device that a flick gesture has occurred.

2. The process according to claim 1, wherein said pointing device includes a mouse and the step of determining from movement of said pointing device includes the step of determining whether movement of said pointing device has occurred after a contact, wherein the contact includes operation of a mouse button.

3. A process for recognizing a gesture created by a pointing device comprising the steps of:

determining if movement of said pointing device occurs beyond a first movement threshold after contact with a computer-generated display;

determining if a velocity of said pointing device has not decreased; and

based on said determining steps, a gestate is determined to have occurred.

4. The process according to claim 3, wherein said pointing device includes a mouse and the contact includes operation of a mouse button.

5. The process according to claim 3, wherein said pointing device includes a stylus and the contact includes physical contact with surface over said computer-generated display.

6. The process according to claim 3, wherein said pointing device includes a user'"'"'s finger and the contact includes physical contact with surface over said computer-generated display.

7. The process according to claim 3, when said velocity determining step includes determining whether said velocity has decreased by a percentage of an initial velocity.

8. The process according to claim 3, wherein said velocity determining step includes determining whether said velocity has decreased below a fist velocity threshold.

9. The process according to claim 3, said process further comprising the step of:

determining a straightness of a path of said gesture,

wherein said gesture is determined to have occurred based on said straightness determination.

10. The process according to claim 3, said process further comprising the step of:

determining if a beginning of said gesture occurs in an inkable region,

wherein said gesture is determined to have occurred when said gesture did not occur in said inkable region.

11. A system for recognizing a gesture created by a pointing device comprising:

means for determining if movement of said pointing device occurs beyond a first movement threshold after contact with a computer-generated display;

means for determining if a velocity of said pointing device has not decreased; and

means for, based on said determining steps, determining that a gesture has occurred.

12. The system according to claim 11, wherein said pointing device includes a mouse and the contact includes operation of a mouse button.

13. The system according to claim 11, wherein said pointing device includes a stylus and the contact includes physical contact with surface over said computer-generated display.

14. The system according to claim 11, wherein said pointing device includes a user'"'"'s finger and the contact includes physical contact with surface over said computer-generated display.

15. The system according to claim 11, wherein said means for deter a velocity includes means for determining whether said velocity has decreased by a percentage of an initial velocity.

16. The system according to claim 11, wherein said means for determining said velocity includes means for determining whether said velocity has decreased below a first velocity threshold.

17. The system according to claim 11, further comprising:

means for determining a straightness of a path of said gesture,

wherein said gesture is determined to have occurred based on said straightness determination.

18. The system according to claim 11, said system further comprising:

means for determining if a beginning of said gesture occurs in an inkable region,

wherein said gesture is determined to have occurred when said gesture did not occur in said inkable region.

19. A computing system comprising:

a storage;

a processor that recognizes at least three gestures, said gestures including;

a press and hold gesture;

a double actuation gesture; and

a flick gesture.

20. The computing system according to claim 19, wherein said processor recognizes at least a fourth gesture, said fourth gesture in including a hold and drag operation.

21. The computing system according to claim 19, wherein said double actuation gesture is a double click of a mouse button.

22. The computing system accord to claim 19, wherein sad double actuation gesture is a double tap of a stylus.
