Abstract

A cage telemetry system includes a plurality of cage groups, first and second radio transponders, and a hub element. The plurality of cage groups are located within a space. Each cage group includes a plurality of animal cages, each cage associated with at least one telemetry module. The first radio transponder is operable to effect wireless communications with each telemetry module of a first cage group. The second radio transponder is operable to effect wireless communications with each telemetry module of a second cage group. The hub element is operable to communicate with the first radio transponder and the second radio transponder, and is further operably connected to a computer network.

Claims

1. A cage telemetry system comprising:

a plurality of cage groups located within a space, each cage group including a plurality of animal cages, each cage associated with at least one telemetry module;

a first radio transponder operable to effect wireless communications with each telemetry module of a first cage group;

a second radio transponder operable to effect wireless communications with each telemetry module of a second cage group;

a hub element operable to communicate with the first radio transponder and the second radio transponder, the hub element operably connected to a computer network.

2. The cage telemetry system of claim 1, wherein

each of the telemetry modules includes at least one sensor and is operable to generate sensor data,

the first transponder is further operable to effect wireless communications to receive sensor data from each telemetry module of the first cage group, and to communicate sensor information representative of sensor data to the hub element;

the hub element is operable to communicate messages generated from the sensor information to a processing device using the computer network.

3. The cage telemetry system of claim 2, wherein the hub element is further operable to communicate messages generated from the sensor information to a personal wireless device using wireless communications.

4. The cage telemetry system of claim 2, wherein the first transponder is further operable to effect wireless communications to communicate sensor information representative of sensor data to the hub element.

5. The cage telemetry system of claim 1, wherein

each of the telemetry modules is operable to generate a signal responsive to an alarm condition,

the first transponder is further operable to effect wireless communications to receive the signal from each telemetry module of the first cage group, and to communicate information representative of the signal to the hub element;

the hub element is operable to communicate messages generated from the information to a processing device using the computer network.

6. The cage telemetry system of claim 1, wherein:

the hub element is operably connected to a computer network in the form of a wired local area network.

7. The cage telemetry system of claim 1, wherein each telemetry module is primarily battery powered.

8. The cage telemetry system of claim 1, wherein the hub is operable to transmit a control message to at least one telemetry module of the first group of cages through the first radio transponder.

9. A method of obtaining information from telemetry modules, each telemetry module associated with an animal cage, wherein a plurality of cage groups are located within a space and each cage group includes a plurality of the animal cages, the method comprising:

a) effecting wireless communications between a first radio transponder and each telemetry module of a first cage group;

b) effecting wireless communications between a second radio transponder and each telemetry module of a second cage group;

c) employing a hub element to communicate with the first radio transponder and the second radio transponder, the hub element operably connected to a computer network.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein

each of the telemetry modules includes at least one sensor and is operable to generate sensor data,

step a) further comprises effecting wireless communications of sensor data between the first radio transponder and at least a first telemetry module of the first cage group;

step c) further comprises employing a hub element to receive sensor information based on sensor data from the first radio transponder, and to communicate messages generated from the sensor information to a processing device using the computer network.

11. The method of claim 10, further comprising the step of employing the hub element to communicate messages generated from the sensor information to a personal wireless device using wireless communications.

12. The method of claim 10, wherein step c) further comprises employing a hub element to employ wireless communications to receive the sensor information from the first radio transponder.

13. The method of claim 9, wherein:

step a) further comprises effecting wireless communications of alarm notification data from at least a first telemetry module to the first radio transponder; and

step c) further comprises employing a hub element to receive alarm notification information based on the alarm information data from the first radio transponder, and to communicate messages generated from the alarm notification information to a processing device using the computer network.

14. The method of claim 9, wherein

step a) further comprises effecting wireless communications from at least a first telemetry module to the first radio transponder using battery power.

15. The method of claim 9, wherein:

step a) further comprises effecting wireless communications of control information from the first radio transponder to a first telemetry module, the control information defining an operational parameter of the first telemetry module.

16. A cage telemetry system comprising:

a plurality of animal cages located within a space, each animal cage associated with at least one telemetry module;

a hub element operable to obtain telemetry information from the at least one telemetry module associated with each animal cage, the hub element operably connected to communicate first data representative of the telemetry information a computer network, the hub further operable to effect wireless communications to communicate second data representative of the telemetry information directly with a personal wireless device.

17. The cage telemetry system of claim 16, wherein at least some of the first data and the second data is the same.

18. The cage telemetry system of claim 16, wherein the telemetry information includes sensor information representative of one or more sensor measurements.

19. The cage telemetry system of claim 18, wherein the sensor information includes temperature sensor information.

20. The cage telemetry system of claim 19, wherein the sensor information further includes sensor information related to the presence of a gas.
