Abstract

A method for allocating threads to a user in a computer system is described. The method comprises queuing up work for a first user and permanently assigning a first thread to the first user, wherein the first thread performs the queued up work for the first user, and wherein each time work is subsequently queued up for the first user, the first thread performs the queued up work for the first user.

Claims

1. A method for allocating threads to a user in a computer system, the method comprising:

queuing up work for a first user; and

permanently assigning a first thread to the first user,

wherein the first thread performs the queued up work for the first user; and

wherein each time work is subsequently queued up for the first user, the first thread performs the queued up work for the first user.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein only the first thread performs work queued up for the first user.

3. The method of claim 1 further comprising determining whether necessary databases and resources are opened for the first user.

4. The method of claim 3 further comprising, responsive to a determination that the necessary databases and resources are not opened for the first user, opening the databases and resources for that first user.

5. The method of claim 4 further comprising completing the queued up work for the first user, wherein upon the completing the queued up work for the first user, the necessary databases and resources opened for the first user remain open.

6. The method of claim 1 further comprising determining whether a primary database can be opened.

7. The method of claim 6 further comprising, responsive to a determination that the primary database can be opened:

opening the primary database; and

performing operations using the primary database.

8. The method of claim 6 further comprising, responsive to a determination that the primary database cannot be opened:

opening a backup database for the first user; and

performing operations using the backup database.

9. The method of claim 1 further comprising, responsive to detection of a hang up condition of the first thread, migrating users assigned to the first thread to other threads.

10. A system for allocating threads to a user in a server environment, the system comprising:

means for queuing up work for a first user; and

means for permanently assigning a first thread to the first user, wherein the first thread performs the queued up work for the first user and performs work subsequently queued up for the first user.

11. The system of claim 10 wherein only the first thread performs work queued up for the first user.

12. The system of claim 10 further comprising means for determining whether necessary databases and resources are opened for the first user.

13. The system of claim 12 further comprising means responsive to a determination that the necessary databases and resources are not opened for the first user for opening the databases and resources for the first user.

14. The system of claim 13 further comprising means for completing the queued up work for the first user, wherein upon completing the queued up work for the first user, the necessary databases and resources opened for the first user remain open.

15. The system of claim 10 further comprising means for determining whether a primary database can be opened.

16. The system of claim 15 further comprising means responsive to a determination that the primary database can be opened for opening the primary database and performing operations using the primary database.

17. The system of claim 15 further comprising means responsive to a determination that the primary database cannot be opened for opening a backup database for the first user and performing operations using the backup database.

18. The system of claim 10 further comprising means responsive to detection of a hang up condition of the first thread for migrating users assigned to the first thread to other threads.

19. A computer system comprising:

a host computer; and

redirector software executable on the host computer, the redirector software for redirecting data items of a user to the user'"'"'s mobile data communications device (“

MDCD”

),

wherein responsive to work being queued up for the user, the host computer permanently assigns a thread to the user to perform the queued up work for the user.

20. The computer system of claim 19 wherein each time work is subsequently queued up for the user, the assigned thread performs the queued up work for the user.
