Abstract

A method and device for manipulating color in a display is disclosed. In one embodiment, a display comprises interferometric display elements formed to have spectral responses that produce white light. In one embodiment, the produced white light is characterized by a standardized white point.

Claims

1. A display, comprising:

at least one interferometric modulator configured to selectively reflect green light incident thereon; and

at least one filter associated with the at least one interferometric modulator and configured to selectively transmit visible wavelengths associated with magenta light and substantially filter other visible wavelengths when illuminated with white light.

2. The display of claim 1, wherein said filter comprises an absorption filter.

3. The display of claim 1, wherein said filter is configured to filter light incident on the at least one interferometric modulator and to filter light reflected by the interferometric modulator.

The display of claim 1, wherein said at least one interferometric modulator comprises a reflective surface and a partially reflective surface defining an optical cavity, the optical cavity having an optical path length that is substantially equal to one half of a wavelength associated with green light.

5. The display of claim 1, wherein said at least one interferometric modulator and said filter produce white light having a standardized white point.

6. The display of claim 5, wherein said white point is one of D55, D65, or D75.

7. A method of fabricating a display, comprising:

forming at least one interferometric modulator configured to selectively reflect green light incident thereon; and

forming a layer of material positioned with respect to said modulator such that light modulated by said at least one interferometric modulator is filtered by said layer of material, wherein said layer of material selectively transmits visible wavelengths associated with magenta light and substantially filters other visible wavelengths when illuminated with white light.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein said filter comprises an absorption filter.

9. The method of claim 7, wherein forming said modulator and forming said filter comprise forming said modulator and said filter to produce white light characterized by a standardized white point.

10. The method of claim 7, wherein said standardized white point is one of D55, D65, or D75.

11. The method of claim 7, wherein forming said layer of material comprises forming said layer of material so as to filter light incident on the at least one interferometric modulator and to filter light reflected by the interferometric modulator.

The method of claim 7, wherein forming said at least one interferometric modulator comprises forming a reflective surface and a partially reflective surface defining an optical cavity, the optical cavity having an optical path length that is substantially equal to one half of a wavelength associated with green light.

13. A display fabricated by said method of claim 7.

14. A display, comprising:

at least one first display element configured to selectively output cyan light; and

at least one second display element configured to selectively output yellow light and positioned proximately to said at least one first display element,

wherein each of said at least one first display element and said at least one second display element comprises a reflective surface and a partially reflective surface.

15. The display of claim 14, wherein said at least one first display element and said at least one second display element produce white light having a standardized white point.

16. The display of claim 15, wherein said standardized white point is one of D55, D65, or D75.

17. The display of claim 14, wherein each of said display elements is characterized by an optical path length d, between said first and second reflective surfaces and wherein said optical path length of said at least one first display element is substantially equal to a wavelength associated with cyan light.

18. The display of claim 17, wherein said optical path length of said at least one second display element is substantially equal to one half of a wavelength associated with yellow light.

19. A method of fabricating a display, comprising:

forming at least one first interferometric modulator configured to selectively reflect cyan light incident thereon; and

forming at least one second interferometric modulator proximately to said at least one first interferometric modulator, wherein said at least one second modulator is configured to selectively reflect yellow light incident thereon.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein forming said modulators comprises forming said modulators to produce white light characterized by a standardized white point.

21. The method of claim 20, wherein said standardized white point is one of D55, D65, or D75.

22. The method of claim 19, wherein each of said modulators is characterized by an optical path length d, and wherein said at least one second modulator is formed having said distance substantially equal to a wavelength associated with cyan light.

23. The method of claim 22, wherein said at least one second modulator is formed having said distance substantially equal to one half of a wavelength associated with yellow light.

24. A display fabricated by said method of claim 19.

25. A display, comprising:

means for outputting green light; and

means for outputting magenta light,

wherein one of said means for outputting green light and said means for outputting magenta light comprises a microelectromechanical system.

26. The display of claim 25, wherein said means for outputting magenta light comprises means for selectively transmitting visible wavelengths associated with magenta light and substantially filtering other visible wavelengths when illuminated with white light.

27. The display of claim 26, wherein said means for selectively transmitting comprises an absorption filter.

28. The display of claim 25, wherein said means for outputting green light and said means for outputting magenta light output white light having a standardized white point.

29. A display, comprising:

means for outputting cyan light; and

means for outputting yellow light,

wherein said means for outputting cyan light and said means for outputting yellow light comprise microelectromechanical systems.

30. The display of claim 29, wherein said means for outputting cyan light and said means for outputting yellow light output white light having a standardized white point.
