1. An apparatus for receiving broadcast messages in a spread spectrum telecommunications system comprising:
- means for associating categories with bit indices of a broadcast indicator bit stream by hashing desirable categories of broadcast messages via a pre-determined hashing function to determine said bit indices;
means for waking up on a periodic basis to receive one or more bits in the broadcast indicator bit stream located at said bit indices;
means for receiving said one or more bits on a modified quick paging channel;
means for receiving one or more incoming page indicator bits on said modified quick paging channel;
means for comparing each of said one or more bits and each of said one or more incoming page indicator bits to an on or off value; and
means for determining from said comparison whether or not to subsequently receive and decode an encoded an encoded bit stream during that follows said broadcast indicator bit stream by a pre-determined time interval.

Abstract
A wireless telecommunications system includes a base station, a plurality of remote stations, a first channel for general page messages containing paging information and broadcast databurst message references, and an auxiliary channel for broadcast databurst notification indicators for the purpose of increasing standby time in remote stations configured to receive broadcast databurst messages.

3. An apparatus for transmitting broadcast messages in a spread spectrum telecommunications system comprising:
-
a) means for determining prior to the beginning of a first time slot the categories of the broadcast messages that will be transmitted during said first time slot;
b) means for determining zero or more bit indices to be associated with a broadcast indicator bit stream of a pre-determined length based upon said determined categories of the broadcast messages from step a);
c) means for generating said broadcast indicator bit stream wherein bits located at said bit indices are set to an on value, and wherein all other bits in said broadcast indicator bit stream are set to an off value;
d) means for transmitting said broadcast indicator bit stream on a first channel during a second time slot that occurs prior to said first time slot, wherein said second time slot precedes said first time slot by a pre-determined time interval; and
e) means for transmitting during said first time slot an encoded bit stream that contains zero or more broadcast pointers corresponding to said categories of the broadcast messages from step a). - View Dependent Claims (4, 5, 6, 7, 8)

-
a) means for determining prior to the beginning of a first time slot the categories of the broadcast messages that will be transmitted during said first time slot by hashing;
b) means for determining zero or more bit indices to be associated with a broadcast indicator bit stream of a pre-determined length by hashing said categories of the broadcast messages via a pre-determined hashing function;

d) means for generating an incoming page bit stream;
e) means for generating an overlaid bit stream by overlaying said broadcast indicator bit stream onto said incoming page bit stream; and
f) means for transmitting said overlaid bit stream on a modified quick paging channel during a second time slot that occurs prior to said first time slot, wherein said second time slot precedes said first time slot by a pre-determined the interval.
