- receiving, from a requestor, an identifier and at least a portion of a postal address;
locating an account associated with the identifier;
comparing the portion of the postal address against multiple candidate addresses which are associated with the account;
generating a response which indicates whether the portion of the postal address is validated or not validated based on the comparison; and
transmitting the response to the requestor.

24. A machine readable medium for automatically validating postal addresses for on-line purchasing transactions having instructions thereon, the instructions when executed performing the method comprising:

receiving, from an on-line merchant, a buyer'"'"'s identifier and at least a portion of a postal address supplied by the buyer during an on-line purchasing transaction between the on-line merchant and the buyer;
validating the identifier;
determining if the portion of the postal address can be matched to one of potentially multiple postal addresses associated with the identifier; and
