Abstract

A method of displaying an image with a display device is provided. The method includes generating a first sub-frame and a second sub-frame corresponding to image data for the image including calculating a first sub-frame pixel value in the first sub-frame using a first sharpening factor associated with a first plurality of gradients from the image data, and alternating between displaying the first sub-frame in a first position and displaying the second sub-frame in a second position spatially offset from the first position.

Claims

1. A method of displaying an image with a display device, the method comprising:

generating a first sub-frame and a second sub-frame corresponding to image data for the image, wherein generating the first sub-frame includes calculating a first sub-frame pixel value in the first sub-frame using a first sharpening factor associated with a first plurality of gradients from the image data; and

alternating between displaying the first sub-frame in a first position and displaying the second sub-frame in a second position spatially offset from the first position.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein each of the first plurality of gradients comprises a multi-scale gradient.

3. The method of claim 2 further comprising:

generating the first sharpening factor using an average of the first plurality of gradients.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein generating the first sub-frame includes calculating the first sub-frame pixel value in the first sub-frame using the first sharpening factor and an error term.

5. The method of claim 4 wherein the error term comprises a difference between the image data and a simulated image.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the first sharpening factor is configured to sharpen an area of the first sub-frame that includes the first sub-frame pixel value.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein the first sharpening factor is configured to sharpen the area of the first sub-frame that includes the first sub-frame pixel value in response to the first plurality of gradients being associated with an edge region.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein the first sharpening factor is configured to smooth an area of the first sub-frame that includes the first sub-frame pixel value.

9. The method of claim 8 wherein the first sharpening factor is configured to smooth the area of the first sub-frame that includes the first sub-frame pixel value in response to the first plurality of gradients being associated with a smooth region.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein generating the second sub-frame includes calculating a first sub-frame pixel value in the second sub-frame using a second sharpening factor associated with a second plurality of gradients from the image data.

11. The method of claim 10 wherein generating the first sub-frame includes calculating a second sub-frame pixel value in the first sub-frame using a third sharpening factor associated with a third plurality of gradients from the image data, and wherein generating the second sub-frame includes calculating a second sub-frame pixel value in the second sub-frame using a fourth sharpening factor associated with a fourth plurality of gradients from the image data.

12. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

generating a third sub-frame and a fourth sub-frame corresponding to the image data; and

wherein alternating between displaying the first sub-frame and displaying the second sub-frame further includes alternating between displaying the first sub-frame in the first position, displaying the second sub-frame in the second position, displaying the third sub-frame in a third position spatially offset from the first position and the second position, and displaying the fourth sub-frame in a fourth position spatially offset from the first position, the second position, and the third position.

13. A system for displaying an image, the system comprising:

an image processing unit configured to generate first and second sub-frames corresponding to image data for the image by applying a sharpening factor associated with a plurality of gradients to an error term for each sub-frame pixel value in the first and the second sub-frames; and

a display device adapted to alternately display the first sub-frame in a first position and the second sub-frame in a second position spatially offset from the first position.

14. The system of claim 13 wherein the error term indicates a difference between the image data and a simulated image.

15. The system of claim 13 wherein the image processing unit is configured to generate the plurality of gradients for each sub-frame pixel value in the first and the second sub-frames using a plurality of gradient estimates from a plurality of scales.

16. The system of claim 13 wherein the image processing unit is configured to generate the sharpening factor for each sub-frame pixel value in the first and the second sub-frames using the associated plurality of gradients for each sub-frame pixel value in the first and the second sub-frames.

17. The system of claim 13, wherein the image processing unit is configured to generate a third sub-frame and a fourth sub-frame corresponding to the image data;

and

wherein the display device is configured to alternate between displaying the first sub-frame in the first position, displaying the second sub-frame in the second position, displaying the third sub-frame in a third position spatially offset from the first position and the second position, and displaying the fourth sub-frame in a fourth position spatially offset from the first position, the second position, and the third position.

18. A system for generating first and second sub-frames for display at spatially offset positions to generate the appearance of an image, the system comprising:

means for calculating a first plurality of gradients using a plurality of scales for a region of interest of a first sub-frame pixel value from the first sub-frame;

means for calculating a first sharpening factor using the first plurality of gradients; and

means for calculating the first sub-frame pixel value using the first sharpening factor.

19. The system of claim 18 further comprising:

means for calculating a second plurality of gradients using the plurality of scales for a region of interest of a second sub-frame pixel value from the first sub-frame;

means for calculating a second sharpening factor using the second plurality of gradients; and

means for calculating the second sub-frame pixel value using the second sharpening factor.

20. The system of claim 18 further comprising:

means for calculating a second plurality of gradients using the plurality of scales for a region of interest of a second sub-frame pixel value from the second sub-frame;

means for calculating a second sharpening factor using the second plurality of gradients; and

means for calculating the second sub-frame pixel value using the second sharpening factor.

21. A computer-readable medium having computer-executable instructions for performing a method of generating first and second sub-frames from an image frame for display at spatially offset positions to generate the appearance of an image, comprising:

setting a first sharpening factor to a relatively low value in response to detecting a first smooth region in the image frame associated with a first region of interest of a first sub-frame pixel value of the first sub-frame;

setting the first sharpening factor to a relatively high value in response to detecting a first edge region in the image frame associated with the first region of interest of the first sub-frame pixel value of the first sub-frame; and

setting the first sharpening factor to a moderate value in response to not detecting the first smooth region or the first edge region in the image frame associated with the first region of interest of the first sub-frame pixel value of the first sub-frame.

22. The computer-readable medium of claim 21 further having computer-executable instructions for:

calculating the first sub-frame pixel value using the first sharpening factor.

23. The computer-readable medium of claim 21 further having computer-executable instructions for:

calculating the first sub-frame pixel value using the first sharpening factor and an error term.

24. The computer-readable medium of claim 21 further having computer-executable instructions for:

setting a second sharpening factor to a relatively low value in response to detecting a second smooth region in the image frame associated with a second region of interest of a second sub-frame pixel value of the first sub-frame;

setting the second sharpening factor to a relatively high value in response to detecting a second edge region in the image frame associated with the first region of interest of the second sub-frame pixel value of the first sub-frame; and

setting the second sharpening factor to a moderate value in response to not detecting the second smooth region or the second edge region in the image frame associated with the second region of interest of the second sub-frame pixel value of the first sub-frame.

25. The computer-readable medium of claim 24 further having computer-executable instructions for:

calculating the second sub-frame pixel value using the second sharpening factor.

26. The computer-readable medium of claim 21 further having computer-executable instructions for:

setting a second sharpening factor to a relatively low value in response to detecting a second smooth region in the image frame associated with a second region of interest of a second sub-frame pixel value of the second sub-frame;

setting the second sharpening factor to a relatively high value in response to detecting a second edge region in the image frame associated with the first region of interest of the second sub-frame pixel value of the second sub-frame; and

setting the second sharpening factor to a moderate value in response to not detecting the second smooth region or the second edge region in the image frame associated with the second region of interest of the second sub-frame pixel value of the second sub-frame.

27. The computer-readable medium of claim 26 further having computer-executable instructions for:

calculating the second sub-frame pixel value using the second sharpening factor.
