Abstract

A boat hull patch anchor adapted to be placed on the inside surface of a boat hull over and overlapping a hole in the hull. The hole in the boat hull may be tapered prior to bonding. A repair compound is applied from the outside surface of the boat hull. A method for the repair of a boat hull including tapering the profile of a hole in a boat hull, applying the patch anchor from the inside of the hull, and applying repair compound from the outside of the hull so as to fill the hole and anchor the patch.

Claims

1. A boat hull patch anchor comprising:

a deformable relatively thin plate, said thin plate comprising a first side and a second side, said thin plate comprising a plurality of through holes through from said first side to said second side;

a fabric layer, said fabric layer adhered to said first side of said thin plate, said fabric layer covering substantially all of said first layer of said thin plates;

an adhesive layer, said adhesive layer interspersed between said thin plate and said fabric layer, said adhesive layer adapted to adhere said fabric layer to said thin plate; and

wherein said thin plate comprises PVC plastic.

4. The boat hull patch anchor of claim 1 wherein said thin plate has a thickness in the range of 0.125 inches to 0.375 inches.

5. The boat hull patch anchor of claim 1 wherein said fabric layer comprises rayon and nylon.

6. The boat hull patch anchor of claim 5 wherein said through holes are circular holes of 0.25 inches in diameter.

7. The boat hull patch anchor of claim 1 wherein said deformable relatively thin plate is adapted to deform easily with the application of heat, and wherein said deformable relatively thin plate retains its deformed shape after cooling.

18. The method of claim 7 wherein said patching compound further comprises fiberglass.

9. A boat hull patch system comprising:

a boat hull patch anchor portion, said boat hull patch anchor portion comprising;

a deformable relatively thin plate, said thin plate comprising a first side and a second side, said thin plate comprising a plurality of through holes through from said first side to said second side; and

a fabric layer, said fabric layer adhered to said first side of said thin plate, said fabric layer covering substantially all of said first layer of said thin plate; and

a boat hull repair compound portion,

wherein said second side of said thin plate is in substantial contact with the inner surface of a boat hull, and wherein said boat hull patch anchor portion is sized and placed to cover a hole in said boat hull, and wherein said boat hull repair compound portion substantially fills said hole in said boat hull.

10. The boat hull patch system of claim 9 wherein said boat hull repair compound substantially fills said plurality of through holes in said thin plate.

11. The boat hull patch system of claim 10 wherein said boat hull repair compound comprises a curable resin compound.

12. The boat hull patch system of claim 11 wherein said boat hull repair compound further comprises chopped fibers.

13. The boat hull patch system of claim 10 wherein the periphery of said hole in said boat hull has a narrowing taper, wherein said taper narrows from the outer surface of said boat hull to said inner surface of said boat hull.

14. The boat hull patch system of claim 10 wherein said boat hull repair compound has soaked through said fabric layer in the area of the annuluses of most of said holes.

15. A method for patching a boat hull, said method comprising:

trimming a boat hull patch anchor to the size of a damaged portion of a hull with an overlap;

adhering the trimmed boat hull patch anchor to the inside surface of the hull surrounding the damaged hull area; and

filling the damaged area with a patching compound.

16. The method of claim 15 wherein said adhering the trimmed boat hull patch anchor comprises adhering with a curable resin compound.

17. The method of claim 15 wherein said patching compound comprises a curable resin.

19. The method of claim 16 further comprising allowing the adhered boat hull patch anchor resin to set prior to filling the damaged area.

20. The method of claim 15 wherein said trimming a boat hull patch anchor to the size of a damaged portion of a hull comprises shaping the boat hull patch anchor using heat.

21. The method of claim 15 said filling the damaged area with a patching compound comprises filling the damaged area with a patching compound from the outside of the hull.

22. The method of claim 15 wherein the damaged portion of a hull comprises a hole through the hull.

23. The method of claim 22 further comprising inserting the boat hull patch anchor through the hull in the hole from the outside of the hull.
