Abstract

An ARQ system and method for a BWA communication system are provided. A transmitter activates an ARQ timer if exist transmission data or retransmission data and transmits the transmission data or the retransmission data to a receiver. The transmitter then receives a response signal for the transmitted data or the retransmitted data and stops the ARQ timer in the not exist of transmission data.

Claims

1. An Automatic Re-transmission Request (ARQ) method for a transmitter in a broadband wireless access communication system, comprising the steps of:

activating an ARQ timer if exist transmission data or retransmission data;

transmitting the transmission data or the retransmission data to a receiver; and

receiving a response signal for the transmitted data or the retransmitted data and stopping the ARQ timer in the not exist of transmission data.

2. The ARQ method of claim 1, further comprising the step of reactivating the ARQ timer upon receipt of transmission data to be transmitted to the receiver from an upper layer while the ARQ timer is stopped.

3. The ARQ method of claim 1, wherein the transmitted data includes a block sequence number (BSN).

4. The ARQ method of claim 1, further comprising the step of performing an ARQ reset upon receipt of a response signal for data not transmitted from the transmitter.

5. The ARQ method of claim 1, further comprising the step of activating the ARQ timer if the transmitted data is in an outstanding state.

6. The ARQ method of claim 1, further comprising the step of activating the ARQ timer if an ARQ_RETRY_TIMEOUT timer expires.

7. The ARQ method of claim 1, further comprising the step of activating the ARQ timer in the presence of retransmission data for which a negative acknowledgement (NACK) signal has been received from the receiver.

8. The ARQ method of claim 1, further comprising the step of stopping the ARQ timer if response signals have been received for all data and neither outstanding nor retransmission data exists.

9. The ARQ method of claim 1, further comprising the step of stopping the ARQ timer in the absence of transmission data for the receiver after the ARQ reset.

10. The ARQ method of claim 1, wherein the ARQ timer includes an ARQ_SYNC_LOSS_TIMEOUT timer.

11. The ARQ method of claim 1, further comprising the steps of:

determining, upon receipt from the transmitter of a response signal for data not transmitted, if the BSN of the response signal falls within an ARQ window range and thus is valid; and

determining the transmission state of the data if the BSN is valid, discontinuing data transmission if the data is not valid, and performing an ARQ reset.

12. An Automatic Re-transmission Request (ARQ) method for a receiver in a broadband wireless access communication system, comprising the steps of:

activating an ARQ timer upon receipt of data from a transmitter;

decoding the received data and transmitting a decoding result to the transmitter; and

stopping the ARQ timer if the decoding result is an acknowledgement (ACK) and no data is received from the transmitter for a predetermined period of time.

13. The ARQ method of claim 12, further comprising the step of reactivating the ARQ timer upon receipt of data from the transmitter while the ARQ timer is stopped.

14. The ARQ method of claim 12, wherein the received data includes a block sequence number (BSN).

15. The ARQ method of claim 12, further comprising the step of performing an ARQ reset if transmission errors have occurred to the received data.

16. The ARQ method of claim 12, further comprising the step of activating the ARQ timer if the received data has loss and a negative acknowledgement (NACK) signal is to be transmitted for the data to the transmitter.

17. The ARQ method of claim 12, further comprising the step of stopping the ARQ timer if all data has been received from the transmitter and there is no need for transmitting a response signal to the transmitter.

18. The ARQ method of claim 12, further comprising the step of stopping the ARQ timer if an ARQ discard message is received and thus there is no need for transmitting a response signal to the transmitter.

19. The ARQ method of claim 12, wherein the ARQ timer includes an ARQ_SYNC_LOSS_TIMEOUT timer.

20. An Automatic Re-transmission Request (ARQ) system for a broadband wireless access communication system, comprising:

a transmitter for activating an ARQ timer if exist transmission data or retransmission data, transmitting the transmission data or the retransmission data to a receiver, and receiving a response signal for the transmitted data or the retransmitted data and stopping the ARQ timer in the not exist of transmission data; and

a receiver for activating an ARQ timer upon receipt of the data from the transmitter, decoding the received data, transmitting a decoding result to the transmitter, and stopping the ARQ timer if the decoding result is an acknowledgement (ACK) and no data is received from the transmitter for a predetermined period of time.

21. The ARQ system of claim 20, wherein the transmitter reactivates the ARQ timer upon receipt of transmission data to be transmitted to the receiver from an upper layer while the ARQ timer is stopped.

22. The ARQ system of claim 20, wherein the transmitter performs an ARQ reset upon receipt of a response signal for data not transmitted from the transmitter.

23. The ARQ system of claim 20, wherein the transmitter activates the ARQ timer if the transmitted data is in an outstanding state.

24. The ARQ system of claim 20, wherein the transmitter activates the ARQ timer if an ARQ_RETRY_TIMEOUT timer expires.

25. The ARQ system of claim 20, wherein the transmitter activates the ARQ timer in the presence of retransmission data for which a negative acknowledgement (NACK) signal has been received from the receiver.

26. The ARQ system of claim 20, wherein the transmitter stops the ARQ timer if response signals have been received for all data and neither outstanding nor retransmission data exists.

27. The ARQ system of claim 20, wherein the transmitter stops the ARQ timer in the absence of transmission data for the receiver after the ARQ reset.

28. The ARQ system of claim 20, wherein the transmitter determines, upon receipt from the transmitter of a response signal for data not transmitted, if the block sequence number (BSN) of the response signal falls within an ARQ window range and thus is valid, determines the transmission state of the data if the BSN is valid, discontinues data transmission if the data is not valid, and performs an ARQ reset.

29. The ARQ system of claim 20, wherein the receiver reactivates the ARQ timer upon receipt of data from the transmitter while the ARQ timer is stopped.

30. The ARQ system of claim 20, wherein the receiver performs an ARQ reset if transmission errors have occurred to the received data.

31. The ARQ system of claim 20, wherein the receiver activates the ARQ timer if the received data has loss and a NACK signal is to be transmitted for the data to the transmitter.

32. The ARQ system of claim 20, wherein the receiver stops the ARQ timer if all data has been received from the transmitter and there is no need for transmitting a response signal to the transmitter.

33. The ARQ system of claim 20, wherein the receiver stops the ARQ timer if an ARQ discard message is received and thus there is no need for transmitting a response signal to the transmitter.

34. The ARQ system of claim 20, wherein each of the ARQ timers includes an ARQ_SYNC_LOSS_TIMEOUT timer.

35. The ARQ system of claim 20, wherein the data includes a BSN.
