Abstract

Aspects of a method and system for an optional closed loop mechanism with adaptive modulations for a multiple input multiple output (MIMO) WLAN system are provided. One aspect of the system may comprise a receiver that may select, for a plurality of spatial streams, a modulation type and/or coding rate. The receiver may communicate a message, via an RF channel, that comprises a plurality of modulation types and/or coding rates. The receiver may configure for receiving subsequent data based on at least one selected modulation type and/or coding rate. Another aspect of the system may comprise a transmitter that may receive a message, via an RF channel, that comprises a specification of, for a plurality of spatial streams, a plurality of modulation types and/or coding rates. The system may configure for transmitting subsequent data based on at least one of the received modulation types and/or coding rates.

Claims

1. A method for communicating information in a multiple input multiple output (MIMO) communications system, the method comprising:

selecting, for a plurality of spatial streams to be transmitted, at least one of;

a modulation type, and a coding rate;

communicating a message, via a radio frequency (RF) channel, comprising a plurality of;

said modulation type, and said coding rate; and

configuring a receiver for receiving subsequent data based on at least one of;

said modulation type, and said coding rate.

2. The method according to claim 1, further comprising receiving a message via an RF channel.

3. The method according to claim 1, further comprising receiving, via an RF channel, a message in said received subsequent data comprising a specification of said at least one of:

said modulation type, and said coding rate, for one of a received plurality of spatial streams.

4. The method according to claim 3, wherein said at least one of:

said modulation type, and said coding rate comprises a specification for one of said plurality of spatial streams to be transmitted and for a corresponding one of said received plurality of spatial streams.

5. The method according to claim 1, further comprising indicating whether beamforming is utilized for transmitting said received subsequent data via a message.

6. The method according to claim 1, further comprising indicating whether channel feedback information was utilized in transmitting said received subsequent data via a message.

7. The method according to claim 1, further comprising selecting said at least one of:

said modulation type and said coding rate based on at least one signal to noise ratio (SNR).

8. A method for communicating information in a MIMO communications system, the method comprising:

receiving a message, via an RF channel, comprising a specification of, for a plurality of spatial streams to be transmitted, a plurality of;

a modulation type, and a coding rate; and

configuring a transmitter for transmitting subsequent data based on at least one of;

said modulation type, and said coding rate.

9. The method, according to claim 8, further comprising transmitting a message via said RF channel.

10. The method according to claim 8, further comprising transmitting, via an RF channel, a message in said transmitted subsequent data comprising a specification of said at least one of:

said modulation type, and said coding rate, for one of a transmitted at least a portion of a plurality of spatial streams.

11. The method according to claim 10, wherein said at least one of:

said modulation type, and said coding rate comprises a specification for one of said plurality of spatial streams to be transmitted and for a corresponding one of said transmitted at least said portion of said plurality of spatial streams.

12. The method according to claim 8, further comprising indicating whether beamforming was utilized for transmitting said transmitted subsequent data via a message.

13. The method according to claim 8, further comprising indicating whether channel feedback information was utilized for transmitting said transmitted subsequent data via a message.

14. The method according to claim 8, further comprising selecting said at least one of:

said modulation type, and said coding rate based on at least on SNR.

15. A system for communicating information in a multiple input multiple output (MIMO) communications system, the system comprising:

a receiver that selects, for a plurality of spatial streams to be transmitted, at least one of;

a modulation type, and a coding rate;

said receiver communicates a message, via a radio frequency (RF) channel, comprising a plurality of;

said modulation type, and said coding rate; and

said receiver configures for receiving subsequent data based on at least one of;

said modulation type, and said coding rate.

16. The system according to claim 15, wherein said receiver receives a message via an RF channel.

17. The system according to claim 15, wherein said receiver receives, via an RF channel, a message in said received subsequent data comprising a specification of said at least one of:

said modulation type, and said coding rate, for one of a received plurality of spatial streams.

18. The system according to claim 17, wherein said at least one of:

said modulation type, and said coding rate comprises a specification for one of said plurality of spatial streams to be transmitted and for a corresponding one of said received plurality of spatial streams.

19. The system according to claim 15, wherein said receiver receives an indication whether beamforming is utilized for transmitting said received subsequent data via a message.

20. The system according to claim 15, wherein said receiver receives an indication whether channel feedback information was utilized in transmitting said received subsequent data via a message.

21. The system according to claim 15, wherein said receiver selects said at least one of:

said modulation type and said coding rate based on at least one signal to noise ratio (SNR).

22. A system for communicating information in a MIMO communications system, the system comprising:

a transmitter that receives a message, via an RF channel, comprising a specification of, for a plurality of spatial streams to be transmitted, a plurality of;

a modulation type, and a coding rate; and

said transmitter configures for transmitting subsequent data based on at least one of;

said modulation type, and said coding rate.

23. The system, according to claim 22, wherein said transmitter transmits a message via said RF channel.

24. The system according to claim 22, wherein said transmitter transmits, via an RF channel, a message in said transmitted subsequent data comprising a specification of said at least one of:

said modulation type, and said coding rate, for one of a transmitted at least a portion of a plurality of spatial streams.

25. The system according to claim 24, wherein said at least one of:

said modulation type, and said coding rate comprises a specification for one of said plurality of spatial streams to be transmitted and for a corresponding one of said transmitted at least said portion of said plurality of spatial streams.

26. The system according to claim 22, wherein said transmitter indicates whether beamforming was utilized for transmitting said transmitted subsequent data via a message.

27. The system according to claim 22, wherein said transmitter indicates whether channel feedback information was utilized for transmitting said transmitted subsequent data via a message.

28. The system according to claim 22, wherein said transmitter selects said at least one of:

said modulation type, and said coding rate based on at least on SNR.
