Abstract

In accordance with the principles of the present invention, a dielectric resonator is provided with a longitudinal through hole with a diameter that varies as a function of height of the resonator so as to increase the frequency spacing between the fundamental mode and the spurious modes.

Claims

1. A dielectric resonator comprising a body formed of a dielectric material, said body including a longitudinal through hole, said through hole varying in cross-sectional area perpendicular to said longitudinal direction as a function of said longitudinal direction.

2. The dielectric resonator of claim 1 wherein said through hole comprises a stepped cylindrical through hole.

3. The dielectric resonator of claim 1 wherein said through hole comprises a conical portion having a larger longitudinal end and a smaller longitudinal end.

The dielectric resonator of claim 1 wherein said through hole comprises a first and second conical portions, said first and second conical portions being inverted relative to each other, wherein said first and second conical portions increase in cross-section as they approach the longitudinal ends of said resonator body.

5. The dielectric resonator of claim 4 wherein said resonator body comprises a truncated conical portion.

6. The dielectric resonator of claim 5 wherein said resonator body further comprises a cylindrical portion adjoining said larger longitudinal end of said conical portion.

7. The dielectric resonator of claim 6 wherein said though hole further comprises a cylindrical portion and said first and second conical portions of said through hole are joined by said cylindrical portion of said through hole.

8. The dielectric resonator of claim 4 wherein said resonator body is cylindrical.

9. The dielectric resonator of claim 4 wherein said though hole further comprises a cylindrical portion and said first and second conical portions of said through hole are joined by said cylindrical portion of said through hole.

10. The dielectric resonator of claim 9 wherein said resonator body further comprises a cylindrical portion adjoining said larger longitudinal end of said conical portion.

11. The dielectric resonator of claim 1 wherein sad resonator body comprises a truncated conical portion having a smaller longitudinal end and a larger longitudinal end, and wherein said stepped cylindrical through hole comprises a first portion having a first cross section and a second portion having a second cross section larger than said first cross section, said second portion positioned adjacent said smaller longitudinal end and said first portion positioned adjacent said larger longitudinal end.

12. The dielectric resonator of claim 11 wherein said resonator body further comprises a cylindrical portion adjoining said larger longitudinal end of said conical portion.

The dielectric resonator of claim 1 wherein said through hole comprises a first portion having a first cross section, a second portion having a second cross section, and a third portion having a third cross section and wherein said first and third cross sections are larger than said second cross section and further wherein said first and third portions of said through hole are positioned adjacent opposite longitudinal ends of said resonator body, respectively, and said second portion of said through hole joins said first and third portions of said through hole.

The dielectric resonator of claim 13 wherein said resonator body comprises a truncated conical portion having a smaller longitudinal end and a larger longitudinal end, and wherein said stepped cylindrical through hole comprises a first portion having a first cross section, a second portion having a second cross section, and a third portion having a third cross section and wherein said first and third cross sections are larger than said second cross section and further wherein said first and third portions of said through hole are positioned adjacent opposite longitudinal ends of said resonator body, respectively, and said second portion of said through hole joins said first and third portions of said through hole.

15. The dielectric resonator of claim 13 wherein said resonator body comprises a cylinder.

The dielectric resonator of claim 1 wherein said resonator body comprises a truncated conical portion having a smaller longitudinal end and a larger longitudinal end, and wherein said through hole comprises a cylindrical portion and a conical portion, wherein said cylindrical portion of said through hole is positioned adjacent said larger longitudinal end of said resonator body and said conical portion of said through hole is positioned adjacent said smaller end of said resonator body, said conical portion of said through hole being inverted relative to said conical portion of said resonator body.

17. The dielectric resonator of claim 11 wherein said resonator body further comprises a cylindrical portion adjoining said larger longitudinal end of said conical portion.

A dielectric resonator comprising a resonator body having a first portion comprising a truncated cone having a first, larger longitudinal end and a second, smaller longitudinal end, and a second, cylindrical portion having a cross section smaller than said second, smaller longitudinal end of said truncated cone portion, said second, cylindrical portion positioned adjacent said second, smaller longitudinal end of said truncated cone.

19. The dielectric resonator of claim 18 wherein said through hole is cylindrical.

20. The dielectric resonator of claim 18 wherein said resonator body further comprises a cylindrical portion adjoining said larger longitudinal end of said conical portion.

A dialogic resonator circuit comprising at least first and second dielectric resonators, each resonator comprising a body formed of the dielectric material, said body including a longitudinal through hole, said through hole varying in cross-sectional area perpendicular to said longitudinal direction as a function of said longitudinal direction wherein said first and second dielectric resonators are positioned coaxially along their longitudinal axes.

22. A dielectric resonator circuit comprising:

a plurality of dielectric resonators, each resonator comprising a body formed of the dielectric material, said body including a longitudinal through hole, said through hole varying in cross-sectional area perpendicular to said longitudinal direction as a function of said longitudinal direction and wherein said dielectric resonators are arranged relative to each other so that the geometric centers of said dielectric resonators are on a single line;

and enclosure containing said dielectric resonators;

an input coupler;

an output coupler;

a pin mounting each dielectric resonator on said enclosure, each said pin having a first portion coupled to said enclosure and a second portion coupled to a corresponding dielectric resonator, each said pin having a longitudinal axis perpendicular to and intersecting said single line, all of said pins parallel to each other, and wherein said pins are rotatable about their longitudinal axes relative to at least one of said enclosure and said corresponding dielectric resonator.

23. The dielectric resonator circuit of claim 22 wherein each said pin comprises a rotatable joint.

24. The dielectric resonator circuit of claim 22 wherein each said pin is mounted to said enclosure such that it is movable along its longitudinal axis so as to move said corresponding dielectric resonator along such axis.

25. The dielectric resonator circuit of claim 24 for the comprising:

a tuning plate corresponding to and mounted adjacent each dielectric resonator.

26. The dielectric resonator circuit of claim 25 wherein each said tuning plate has a circular cross-section and is oriented such that an axis perpendicular to its cross section is parallel to said longitudinal axis of said mounting pin mounting said corresponding dielectric resonator to said enclosure.

27. The dielectric resonator circuit of claim 26 wherein said axis of said tuning plate is coaxial with said longitudinal axis of said corresponding mounting pin.

28. The dielectric resonator circuit of claim 27 wherein said tuning plate is externally threaded and is mounted in a matingly threaded hole in said enclosure whereby said tuning plate may be rotated to tune said dielectric resonator circuit.

29. The dielectric resonator circuit of claim 28 wherein each of said pins in externally threaded and is threadedly engaged to said enclosure whereby said pin and said corresponding dielectric resonator can be rotated relative to said enclosure.

30. The dielectric resonator circuit of claim 29 wherein each said tuning plate comprises a through hole and wherein each said pin passes through said through hole of a corresponding tuning plate and is rotatable therein relative to said tuning plate.

31. The dielectric resonator circuit of claim 30 wherein each said pin is externally threaded and each said through hole in each said tuning plate is matingly threaded whereby said pin can rotate relative to said tuning plate.
