1. A method of measuring an analyte concentration, the method comprising the step of:

  • measuring a signal from an implantable device, wherein the signal is indicative of an analyte concentration, the implantable device comprising a housing comprising electronic circuitry, and at least one sensing region operably connected to the electronic circuitry of the housing, wherein the sensing region comprising a biointerface membrane and is configured to be implanted in a tissue of a host, the biointerface membrane comprising a first domain distal to the implantable device, wherein the first domain comprises an open-cell configuration, the biointerface membrane comprising a second domain proximal to the implantable device, wherein the second domain is substantially impermeable to cells or cell processes, and wherein the biointerface membrane comprises a bioactive agent incorporated into the biointerface membrane which is delivered to the tissue of the host.
