Abstract

A wireless communication method and device for managing information available via a wireless connection. Service information may be transmitted to a wireless communication device (WCD) via a short-range wireless network. Authentication information is scanned from an object containing machine-readable data via a different short-range communication medium. The authentication information is used to determine whether the downloaded service information should be permanently stored and made available in the user interface of the WCD.

Claims

1. A method for managing information available via a wireless connection, comprising:

receiving service information via a wireless connection;

receiving service authentication information via a wireless communication medium distinct from the wireless connection;

comparing the service information to the service authentication information, and

authenticating a service if the service information corresponds to the service authentication information.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the wireless connection is a short-range communication network.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the wireless connection is at least one of a Bluetooth™

network, a Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN), an Ultra Wide Band Network (UWB), or a Wireless Universal Serial Bus Network (WUSB).

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the service authentication information is received by way of machine-reading a service authentication tag.

The method of claim 4, wherein the machine-reading is performed via at least one of a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) communication, a Bar Code Reader (BCR) communication including processes related to interpreting UPC labels, an Optical Character Recognition (OCR) communication, a Magnetic Ink Character Recognition (MICR) communication, a Conductive Ink Recognition communication or an Ultra Violet (UV) Ink Recognition communication.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the service information includes bookmark information related to a particular service.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein the service is accessible via wide-area network connection.

8. The method of claim 6, wherein the bookmark information is temporarily stored in a memory of a wireless communication device.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein the bookmark information is permanently stored in a memory of a wireless communication device if the service is authenticated.

10. The method of claim 6, wherein the bookmark information includes at least one of universal resource locator (URL) information, telephone number information, email address information or Short Messaging Service (SMS) keyword information.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the service is made available in a user interface upon authentication.

12. The method of claim 1, further including a firewall which may allow or exclude service information based on an identification related to an information provider.

13. An apparatus for managing information available via a wireless connection, comprising:

a wireless communication device;

one or more receivers coupled to the device for receiving service information via a wireless connection and for receiving service authentication information via a wireless communication medium distinct from the wireless connection, and

a processor coupled to the receiver for comparing the service information to the service authentication information and for authenticating a service if the service information corresponds to the service authentication information.

14. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein the wireless connection is a short-range communication network.

15. The apparatus of claim 14, wherein the wireless connection is at least one of a Bluetooth™

network, a Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN), an Ultra Wide Band Network (UWB), or a Wireless Universal Serial Bus Network (WUSB).

16. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein the service authentication information is received by way of machine-reading a service authentication tag.

17. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein the machine-reading is performed via at least one of a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) communication, a Bar Code Reader (BCR) communication including processes related to interpreting UPC labels, an Optical Character Recognition (OCR) communication, a Magnetic Ink Character Recognition (MICR) communication, a Conductive Ink Recognition communication or an Ultra Violet (UV) Ink Recognition communication.

18. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein the service information includes bookmark information related to a particular service.

19. The apparatus of claim 18, wherein the service is accessible via wide-area network connection.

20. The apparatus of claim 18, wherein the bookmark information is temporarily stored in a memory of a wireless communication device.

21. The apparatus of claim 20, wherein the bookmark information is permanently stored in a memory of a wireless communication device if the service is authenticated.

22. The apparatus of claim 18, wherein the bookmark information includes at least one of universal resource locator (URL) information, telephone number information, email address information or Short Messaging Service (SMS) keyword information.

23. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein the service is made available in a user interface upon authentication.

24. The apparatus of claim 13, further including a firewall which may allow or exclude service information based on an identification related to an information provider.

25. A computer program product comprising a computer usable medium having computer readable program code embodied in said medium for managing information available via a wireless connection, said product comprising:

a computer readable program code for receiving service information via a wireless connection;

a computer readable program code for receiving service authentication information via a wireless communication medium distinct from the wireless connection;

a computer readable program code for comparing the service information to the service authentication information, and

a computer readable program code for authenticating a service if the service information corresponds to the service authentication information.

26. The computer program product of claim 25, wherein the wireless connection is a short-range communication network.

27. The computer program product of claim 26, wherein the wireless connection is at least one of a Bluetooth™

network, a Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN), an Ultra Wide Band Network (UWB), or a Wireless Universal Serial Bus Network (WUSB).

28. The computer program product of claim 25, wherein the service authentication information is received way of machine-reading a service authentication tag.

29. The computer program product of claim 28, wherein the machine-reading is performed via at least one of a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) communication, a Bar Code Reader (BCR) communication including processes related to interpreting UPC labels, an Optical Character Recognition (OCR) communication, a Magnetic Ink Character Recognition (MICR) communication, a Conductive Ink Recognition communication or an Ultra Violet (UV) Ink Recognition communication.

30. The computer program product of claim 25, wherein the service information includes bookmark information related to a particular service.

31. The computer program product of claim 30, wherein the service is accessible via wide-area network connection.

32. The computer program product of claim 30, wherein the bookmark information is temporarily stored in a memory of a wireless communication device.

33. The computer program product of claim 32, wherein the bookmark information is permanently stored in a memory of a wireless communication device if the service is authenticated.

34. The computer program product of claim 30, wherein the bookmark information includes at least one of universal resource locator (URL) information, telephone number information, email address information or Short Messaging Service (SMS) keyword information.

35. The computer program product of claim 25, wherein the service is made available in a user interface upon authentication.

36. The computer program product of claim 25, further including a firewall which may allow or exclude service information based on an identification related to an information provider.

37. A method for managing information available via a wireless connection, comprising:

receiving service information via a Bluetooth™

connection;

receiving service authentication information via RFID communication;

comparing the received service information to the service authentication information, and

authenticating a service if the service information corresponds to the service authentication information.

38. An apparatus for managing information available via a wireless connection, comprising:

a wireless communication device;

one or more receivers coupled to the device for receiving service information via a Bluetooth™

connection and for receiving service authentication information via RFID communication, and

a processor for comparing the received service information to the service authentication information and for authenticating a service if the service information corresponds to the service authentication information.

39. A computer program product comprising a computer usable medium having computer readable program code embodied in said medium for managing information available via a wireless connection, said product comprising:

a computer readable program code for receiving service information via a Bluetooth™

connection;

a computer readable program code for receiving service authentication information via RFID communication;

a computer readable program code for comparing the service information to the service authentication information, and

a computer readable program code for authenticating a service if the service information corresponds to the service authentication information.
