Abstract

Methods, systems, and articles of manufacture consistent with the present invention provide for administering a protected item. An anti-theft key encoded with a radio frequency identification of the user and biometric data of the user is provided. The anti-theft key is associated with the protected item such that the protected item is accessible with the anti-theft key.

Claims

1. A method in a data processing system having a program for administering a protected item, the method comprising the steps of:

providing an anti-theft key encoded with a radio frequency identification of a user and biometric data of the user; and

associating the anti-theft key with the protected item such that the protected item is accessible with the anti-theft key.

2. A method of claim 1 further comprising the step of:

obtaining the radio frequency identification of the user.

3. A method of claim 1 further comprising the step of:

obtaining the biometric data of the user.

4. A method of claim 1 wherein the biometric data comprises retina information.

5. A method of claim 1 wherein the biometric data comprises fingerprint information.

6. A method of claim 1 wherein the anti-theft key is encoded with a public key.

7. A method of claim 1 further comprising the step of:

deploying the protected item to the user after associating the anti-theft key with the protected item.

8. A method of claim 1 further comprising the step of:

determining whether the user has access to the protected item by decrypting the anti-theft key using the user'"'"'s radio frequency identification and the user'"'"'s biometric data.

9. A method of claim 1 wherein associating the anti-theft key with the protected item comprises storing the anti-theft key in a hardware device of the protected item.

10. A method of claim 9 wherein the hardware device is a field programmable gate array.

11. A computer-readable medium containing instructions that cause a data processing system having a program to perform a method for administering a protected item, the method comprising the steps of:

providing an anti-theft key encoded with a radio frequency identification of the user and biometric data of the user; and

associating the anti-theft key with the protected item such that the protected item is accessible with the anti-theft key.

12. A computer-readable medium of claim 11 further comprising the step of:

obtaining the radio frequency identification of the user.

13. A computer-readable medium of claim 11 further comprising the step of:

obtaining the biometric data of the user.

14. A computer-readable medium of claim 11 wherein the biometric data comprises retina information.

15. A computer-readable medium of claim 11 wherein the biometric data comprises fingerprint information.

16. A computer-readable medium of claim 11 wherein the anti-theft key is encoded with a public key.

17. A computer-readable medium of claim 11 further comprising the step of:

deploying the protected item to the user after associating the anti-theft key with the protected item.

18. A computer-readable medium of claim 11 further comprising the step of:

determining whether the user has access to the protected item by decrypting the anti-theft key using the user'"'"'s radio frequency identification and the user'"'"'s biometric data.

19. A computer-readable medium of claim 11 wherein associating the anti-theft key with the protected item comprises storing the anti-theft key in a hardware device of the protected item.

20. A computer-readable medium of claim 19 wherein the hardware device is a field programmable gate array.

21. A system for administering a protected item, the system comprising:

a memory having a program that

provides an anti-theft key encoded with a radio frequency identification of the user and biometric data of the user, and

associates the anti-theft key with the protected item such that the protected item is accessible with the anti-theft key; and

a processing unit that runs the program.

22. A system for administering a protected item, the system comprising:

means for providing an anti-theft key encoded with a radio frequency identification of the user and biometric data of the user; and

means for associating the anti-theft key with the protected item such that the protected item is accessible with the anti-theft key.

23. A method in client data processing system having a program for administering a protected item, the method comprising the steps of:

obtaining user information including a radio frequency identification of the user and biometric data of the user;

transmitting the user information and an identifier of the protected item to a server via a network; and

receiving, from the server, an anti-theft key encoded with the radio frequency identification of the user and the biometric data of the user, the anti-theft key being associated with the protected item such that the protected item is accessible with the anti-theft key.

24. A client data processing system for administering a protected item, the client data processing system comprising:

a memory having a program for administering a protected item that

obtains user information including a radio frequency identification of the user and biometric data of the user,

transmits the user information and an identifier of the protected item to a server via a network, and

receives, from the server, an anti-theft key encoded with the radio frequency identification of the user and the biometric data of the user, the anti-theft key being associated with the protected item such that the protected item is accessible with the anti-theft key; and

a processing unit that runs the program.

25. A method in a server data processing system having a program for administering a protected item, the method comprising the steps of:

receiving, from a client via a network, user information including a radio frequency identification of a user and biometric data of the user;

generating an anti-theft key encoded with the radio frequency identification of the user and the biometric data of the user, the anti-theft key being associated with the protected item such that the protected item is accessible with the anti-theft key; and

sending the anti-theft key to the client via the network.

26. A method of claim 25 further comprising the step of:

sending the anti-theft key to an administrator of the protected item.

27. A server data processing system for administering a protected item, the server data processing system comprising:

a memory having a program that

receives, from a client via a network, user information including a radio frequency identification of a user and biometric data of the user,

generates an anti-theft key encoded with the radio frequency identification of the user and the biometric data of the user, the anti-theft key being associated with the protected item such that the protected item is accessible with the anti-theft key, and

sends the anti-theft key to the client via the network; and

a processing unit that runs the program.

28. A method in a data processing system having a program for administering a protected item, the method comprising the steps of:

receiving an anti-theft key for the protected item from a server via a network, the anti-theft key being encoded with a radio frequency identification of a user and biometric data of the user; and

associating the anti-theft key with the protected item.

29. A data processing system for administering a protected item, the data processing system comprising:

a memory having a program that

receives an anti-theft key for the protected item from a server via a network, the anti-theft key being encoded with a radio frequency identification of a user and biometric data of the user, and

associates the anti-theft key with the protected item; and

a processing unit that runs the program.
