Abstract

A user interface can display electronic ink in one section of a display device and corresponding recognized or converted text in another section of the display device that was generated from a electronic ink recognition system. Each page of electronic ink and each corresponding page of converted or recognized text are linked to one another. In other words, each page of electronic ink can be displayed only with its corresponding page of converted or recognized text until a command or message is received that editing of the converted or recognized text has been completed. Once the command or message is received that editing of the converted or recognized text has been completed, then the link between an electronic ink page and its corresponding converted text page is broken. This means that the converted text page can now be saved independently of its corresponding electronic ink page.

21. A computer-implemented method for editing electronic ink documents, the method comprising:

providing a page of electronic ink linked to a page of text, wherein the page of text is provided by converting the page of ink into a page of text;

receiving an edit completion command; and

unlinking the page of text from the page of electronic ink when the edit completion command is received.

22. The method of claim 21, further comprising selecting a corresponding word in the page of electronic ink in response to a selection of the corresponding word in the page of text.

23. The method of claim 21, further comprising selecting a corresponding word in the page of text in response to a selection of the corresponding word in the page of electronic ink.

24. The method of claim 21, further comprising highlighting a corresponding word in the page of electronic ink in response to highlighting the corresponding word in the page of text.

25. The method of claim 21, further comprising displaying a menu having a list of options for editing a selected word.

26. The method of claim 25, wherein the list of options comprises one of changing a classification of electronic ink corresponding to a selected word in the page of text, adding a selected word to a dictionary, cutting a selected word from the page of text, copying a selected word from the page of text, and pasting another word over a selected word in the page of text.

27. The method of claim 21, further comprising defining a break point for a word and separating a word at the defined break point.

28. A computer-readable medium having computer executable instructions for editing electronic ink documents, comprising:

linking a page of text to a corresponding page of electronic ink;

editing the page of text;

receiving an edit complete command;

unlinking the edited page of text from the corresponding page of electronic ink when the edit complete command is received; and

saving the edited page of text separate from the corresponding page of electronic ink.

29. The computer-readable medium of claim 28, further comprising selecting a corresponding word in the page of electronic ink in response to a selection of the corresponding word in the page of text.

30. The computer-readable medium of claim 28, further comprising selecting a corresponding word in the page of text in response to a selection of the corresponding word in the page of electronic ink.

31. The computer-readable medium of claim 28, further comprising highlighting a corresponding word in the page of electronic ink in response to highlighting the corresponding word in the page of text.

32. The computer-readable medium of claim 28, further comprising displaying a menu having a list of options for editing a selected word.

33. The computer-readable medium of claim 28, wherein the list of options comprises one of changing a classification of electronic ink corresponding to a selected word in the page of text, adding a selected word to a dictionary, cutting a selected word from the page of text, copying a selected word from the page of text, and pasting another word over a selected word in the page of text.

34. The computer-readable medium of claim 28, further comprising defining a break point for a word and separating a word at the defined break point.

35. A computer-implemented method for editing electronic ink documents, comprising:

editing a page of text having a linked page of electronic ink;

unlinking the edited page of text from the page of electronic ink in response to an edit completion command; and

saving the edited page of text separate from the page of electronic ink.

36. The method of claim 35, further comprising selecting a corresponding word in the page of electronic ink in response to a selection of the corresponding word in the page of text.

37. The method of claim 35, further comprising highlighting a corresponding word in the page of electronic ink in response to highlighting the corresponding word in the page of text.

38. The method of claim 35, further comprising displaying a menu having a list of options for editing a selected word.

39. The method of claim 38, wherein the list of options comprises one of changing a classification of electronic ink corresponding to a selected word in the page of text, adding a selected word to a dictionary, cutting a selected word from the page of text, copying a selected word from the page of text, and pasting another word over a selected word in the page of text.

40. The method of claim 35, further comprising defining a break point for a word and separating a word at the defined break point.

36-1. The method of claim 35, further comprising selecting a corresponding word in the page of text in response to a selection of the corresponding word in the page of electronic ink.
