Abstract

Apparatus and methods are disclosed for simultaneously tracking multiple finger and palm contacts as hands approach, touch, and slide across a proximity-sensing, multi-touch surface. Identification and classification of intuitive hand configurations and motions enables unprecedented integration of typing, resting, pointing, scrolling, 3D manipulation, and handwriting into a versatile, ergonomic computer input device.

Claims

1. A method for mapping gestures performed on a multi-touch surface to simulate mouse manipulations, the method comprising:

generating mouse pointer motion signals in response to translational slides of a predetermined number fingertips;

generating a single mouse click signal in response to a synchronized tap of a second predetermined number of fingertips;

generating mouse drag signals in response to translational slides of a third predetermined number of fingertips.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

generating a double mouse click signal in response to a synchronized tap of a fourth predetermined number of fingertips.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the gestures simulating mouse manipulations are performed with a first hand and gestures corresponding to text cursor manipulations are performed with an opposite hand.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein the text cursor manipulations include generating text cursor motion signals in response to translational slides of a first predetermined number of fingertips.

5. The method of claim 4 wherein the text cursor manipulations include generating text selection signals in response to translational slides of a second predetermined number of fingertips.

6. The method of claim 3 wherein the text cursor manipulations include generating text selection signals in response to translational slides of a predetermined number of fingertips.

7. The method of claim 2 wherein the gestures simulating mouse manipulations are performed with a first hand and gestures corresponding to text cursor manipulations are performed with an opposite hand.

8. The method of claim 7 wherein the text cursor manipulations include generating text cursor motion signals in response to translational slides of a first predetermined number of fingertips.

9. The method of claim 8 wherein the text cursor manipulations include generating text selection signals in response to translational slides of a second predetermined number of fingertips.

10. The method of claim 7 wherein the text cursor manipulations include generating text selection signals in response to translational slides of a predetermined number of fingertips.

11. A method for mapping gestures performed on a multi-touch surface to simulate mouse manipulations, the method comprising:

generating mouse pointer motion signals in response to translational slides of a predetermined number fingertips;

generating a single mouse click signal in response to a synchronized tap of a second predetermined number of fingertips; and

generating a double mouse click signal in response to a synchronized tap of a third predetermined number of fingertips.

12. The method of claim 11 wherein the gestures simulating mouse manipulations are performed with a first hand and gestures corresponding to text cursor manipulations are performed with an opposite hand.

13. The method of claim 12 wherein the text cursor manipulations include generating text cursor motion signals in response to translational slides of a first predetermined number of fingertips.

14. The method of claim 13 wherein the text cursor manipulations include generating text selection signals in response to translational slides of a second predetermined number of fingertips.

15. The method of claim 12 wherein the text cursor manipulations include generating text selection signals in response to translational slides of a predetermined number of fingertips.

16. A method for mapping gestures performed on a multi-touch surface to graphical user interface commands, the method comprising generating window scrolling commands in response to translational slides of a predetermined number fingertips.
