Abstract

A patient hydration system with a patient urine output measurement device, a hydration fluid administration subsystem, and a controller, responsive to the patient urine output measurement device. The controller is configured to control the hydration fluid administration subsystem to administer hydration fluid to the patient to prevent dehydration of the patient. A hydration sensor is also included to detect at least one patient parameter indicative of the patient'"'"'s hydration state.

Claims

1. A patient hydration system comprising:

a patient urine output measurement device;

a hydration fluid administration subsystem;

a controller, responsive to the patient urine output measurement device, configured to control the hydration fluid administration subsystem to administer hydration fluid to the patient to prevent dehydration of the patient; and

a hydration sensor which detects at least one patient parameter indicative of the patient'"'"'s hydration state.

2. The system of claim 1 in which the hydration sensor has an output connected to the controller and the controller determines the patient'"'"'s hydration state based on the at least one patient parameter.

3. The system of claim 2 in which the controller is configured to output an indication of the patient'"'"'s hydration state.

4. The system of claim 2 in which the controller is configured to control the administration subsystem to administer hydration fluid to the patient based on the patient'"'"'s urine output and the patient'"'"'s hydration state.

5. The system of claim 1 in which the patient urine output measurement device includes a urine reservoir connected to the patient.

6. The system of claim 5 in which the patient urine output measurement device further includes a weighing mechanism for weighing the urine reservoir.

7. The system of claim 1 in which the hydration fluid administration subsystem includes a pump responsive to a source of hydration fluid.

8. The system of claim 1 in which the hydration sensor is responsive to the patient'"'"'s urine and the at least one patient parameter is a urine parameter.

9. The system of claim 8 in which the urine parameter is selected from the group consisting of urine conductivity, urine color, or specific gravity.

10. The system of claim 1 further including a line carrying the patient'"'"'s urine output.

11. The system of claim 10 in which the hydration sensor includes a fitting on the line.

12. The system of claim 11 in which the fitting includes a flow restrictor at its output.

13. The system of claim 11 in which the fitting includes spaced conductive plates for measuring the conductivity of the urine.

14. The system of claim 11 in which the fitting includes at least one illumination source and a detector responsive thereto to detect the color of the urine.

15. The system of claim 11 in which the fitting includes at lest one specific gravity ball therein for detecting the specific gravity of the urine.

16. The system of claim 15 in which the fitting further includes an illumination source and detector pair for each ball, the ball blocking the illumination source from the detector when floating.

17. A patient hydration system comprising:

a patient urine output measurement device;

a hydration sensor which detects at least one urine parameter indicative of the patient'"'"'s hydration state;

a hydration fluid administration subsystem; and

a controller, responsive to the patient urine output measurement device and the hydration sensor, configured;

to control the hydration fluid administration subsystem based on the patient'"'"'s urine output;

to determine the patient'"'"'s hydration state based on the at least one urine parameter, and

to control the hydration fluid administration subsystem based on the patient'"'"'s hydration state and/or to provide an output indicative of the patient'"'"'s hydration state.

18. A fluid management system for a patient injected with a contrast agent, the system comprising:

a console for mounting on an IV pole;

a first attachment mechanism extending from the console for hanging a urine collection chamber;

a first weighing device associated with the console and responsive to the first attachment;

a second attachment extending from the console for hanging a source of hydration fluid;

a second weighing device associated with the console and responsive to the second attachment for weighing the source of hydration fluid;

an infusion pump integrated with the console and configured to pump hydration fluid from the source of hydration fluid to the patient;

a hydration sensor which detects at least one patient parameter indicative of the patient'"'"'s hydration state; and

a controller in the console, responsive to the first and second weighing devices and the hydration sensor, and configured to;

determine the patient'"'"'s hydration state based on the at least one patient parameter, and

control the infusion pump to hydrate the patient based on the patient'"'"'s urine output and hydration state to prevent radiocontrast nephropathy.

19. A patient hydration method comprising:

administering hydration fluid to a patient at an infusion rate;

measuring the patient'"'"'s urine output;

determining the patient'"'"'s hydration state; and

controlling the hydration fluid infusion rate based on the patient'"'"'s urine output and the patient'"'"'s hydration state.

20. The method of claim 19 in which determining the patient'"'"'s hydration state includes analyzing the patient'"'"'s urine to detect a urine parameter indicative of the patient'"'"'s hydration state.

21. The method of claim 20 in which the urine parameter is selected from the group consisting of urine conductivity, urine color, and/or specific gravity.

22. The method of claim 21 in which measuring the patient'"'"'s urine output includes weighing the patient'"'"'s urine output.

23. The method of claim 19 in which administering hydration fluid includes pumping hydration fluid into the patient.

24. The method of claim 23 in which controlling the hydration fluid infusion rate includes controlling an infusion pump.
