Abstract

A method of treating a diabetic condition of a patient comprises providing a glucose detection system which is portable and usable by the patient, and which is configured to measure glucose levels with a standard error of less than about 30 mg/dL. The method further comprises making a plurality of measurements of the patient'"'"'s glucose level with the portable, patient-usable glucose detection system. The method further comprises administering a diabetes treatment to the patient based on one or more of the measurements of the patient'"'"'s glucose level.

Claims

1. A method of treating a diabetic condition of a patient, said method comprising:

providing a glucose detection system which is portable and usable by said patient, and which is configured to measure glucose levels with a standard error of less than about 10 mg/dL;

with said portable, patient-usable glucose detection system, making a plurality of measurements of said patient'"'"'s glucose level; and

administering a diabetes treatment to said patient based on one or more of said measurements of said patient'"'"'s glucose level.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising instructing said patient to make said plurality of measurements with said glucose detection system.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein said glucose detection system is small enough to fit into a purse or backpack.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein said glucose detection system is small enough to fit into a pants pocket.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein said glucose detection system is small enough to fit into the palm of a hand of said patient.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein said standard error is assessed at a 95% confidence level.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein said standard error is less than 10 mg/dL.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein said standard error is less than 5 mg/dL.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein said standard error is less than 2 mg/dL.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein administering a diabetes treatment comprises administering insulin to said patient.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein administering a diabetes treatment comprises administering food and/or drink to said patient.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein administering a diabetes treatment comprises engaging in exercise.

13. The method of claim 1, further comprising providing a plurality of sample elements for use with said glucose detection system, each of said sample elements comprising a reagentless sample chamber.

14. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

transporting said glucose detection system to a location outside said patient'"'"'s home and outside a hospital, doctor'"'"'s office or any other such clinical facility; and

making, at said location, one or more of said plurality of measurements of said patient'"'"'s glucose level.

15. A method of treating a diabetic condition of a patient, said method comprising:

providing a glucose detection system which is portable and usable by said patient, and which is configured to measure glucose levels with an RMS average error of less than about 10 mg/dL;

with said portable, patient-usable glucose detection system, making a plurality of measurements of said patient'"'"'s glucose level; and

administering a diabetes treatment to said patient based on one or more of said measurements of said patient'"'"'s glucose level.

16. The method of claim 15, further comprising instructing said patient to make said plurality of measurements with said glucose detection system.

17. The method of claim 15, wherein said glucose detection system is small enough to fit into a purse or backpack.

18. The method of claim 15, wherein said glucose detection system is small enough to fit into a pants pocket.

19. The method of claim 15, wherein said glucose detection system is small enough to fit into the palm of a hand of said patient.

20. The method of claim 15, wherein said RMS average error is less than 10 mg/dL.

21. The method of claim 15, wherein said RMS average error is less than 5 mg/dL.

22. The method of claim 15, wherein said RMS average error is less than 2 mg/dL.

23. The method of claim 15, wherein administering a diabetes treatment comprises administering insulin to said patient.

24. The method of claim 15, wherein administering a diabetes treatment comprises administering food and/or drink to said patient.

25. The method of claim 15, wherein administering a diabetes treatment comprises engaging in exercise.

26. The method of claim 15, further comprising providing a plurality of sample elements for use with said glucose detection system, each of said sample elements comprising a reagentless sample chamber.
