Abstract

Traffic data, such as traffic flow data, is obtained for a road system. Weather data is obtained for the geographical region corresponding to the road system. A graphical map of the road system is then displayed and the traffic data and weather data is simultaneously displayed on a graphical map of the road system. The graphical map of the road system may be a 2D or a 3D view. The weather data may be a graphical representation of weather conditions.

Claims

1. A computer-implemented method of simultaneously displaying on a graphical map (i) traffic data representing traffic conditions on a road system, and (ii) weather data, the method comprising:

(a) obtaining traffic data for at least some of the road system;

(b) obtaining weather data for the geographical region corresponding to the road system; and

(c) creating a graphical map of the road system and simultaneously displaying on the graphical map of the road system;

(i) the traffic data, and

(ii) the weather data.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the graphical map of the road system is a 3D view.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein the road system encompasses a predefined geographical region, and step (c) further includes creating and displaying selected 3D landmarks that are within the geographical region.

4. The method of claim 2 wherein the weather data includes a graphical representation of weather conditions.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the graphical map of the road system is a 2D view.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the traffic data is traffic flow data.

7. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

(d) obtaining weather radar data in a radial data format;

(e) translating the radial data into raster image format data, wherein the raster image format data is used in step (c).

8. The method of claim 1 wherein the traffic conditions include traffic incident information, and step (c) further comprises simultaneously displaying on the graphical map of the road system:

(iii) the traffic incident information.

9. An article of manufacture for simultaneously displaying on a graphical map (i) traffic data representing traffic conditions on a road system, and (ii) weather data, the article of manufacture comprising a computer-readable medium holding computer-executable instructions for performing a method comprising:

(a) obtaining traffic data for at least some of the road system;

(b) obtaining weather data for the geographical region corresponding to the road system; and

(c) creating a graphical map of the road system and simultaneously displaying on the graphical map of the road system;

(i) the traffic data, and

(ii) the weather data.

10. The article of manufacture of claim 9 wherein the graphical map of the road system is a 3D view.

11. The article of manufacture of claim 10 wherein the road system encompasses a predefined geographical region, and step (c) further includes creating and displaying selected 3D landmarks that are within the geographical region.

12. The article of manufacture of claim 10 wherein the weather data includes a graphical representation of weather conditions.

13. The article of manufacture of claim 9 wherein the graphical map of the road system is a 2D view.

14. The article of manufacture of claim 9 wherein the traffic data is traffic flow data.

15. The article of manufacture of claim 9 wherein the computer-executable instructions perform a method further comprising:

(d) obtaining weather radar data in a radial data format;

(e) translating the radial data into raster image format data, wherein the raster image format data is used in step (c).

16. The article of manufacture of claim 9 wherein the traffic conditions include traffic incident information, and step (c) further comprises simultaneously displaying on the graphical map of the road system:

(iii) the traffic incident information.

17. A computer-implemented method of simultaneously displaying on a graphical map (i) traffic flow data representing traffic conditions on a road system, and (ii) weather data, the road system encompassing a predefined geographical region the method comprising:

(a) creating a graphical map of the road system, the graphical map including one or more segments;

(b) determining a status of at least some of the segments on the graphical map, the status corresponding to traffic flow data associated with that segment;

(c) obtaining weather data for the geographical region corresponding to the road system; and

(d) simultaneously displaying on the graphical map of the road system;

(i) traffic flow data showing the status of at least some of the segments, and

(ii) the weather data showing weather conditions for at least some of the segments.

18. The method of claim 17 wherein the graphical map of the road system is a 3D view.

19. The method of claim 18 wherein steps (a) and (d) further include creating and displaying selected 3D landmarks that are within the geographical region.

20. The method of claim 17 wherein each segment on the graphical map is animated to reflect its respective status by simulating different vehicle speeds that are representative of actual vehicle speeds.

21. The method of claim 20 wherein each segment on the traffic flow map simulates vehicle densities that are representative of actual vehicle densities on the road system.

22. The method of claim 17 wherein the weather data is displayed for the entire geographical region covered by the graphical map of the road system.

23. The method of claim 17 wherein the graphical map of the road system is a 2D view.

24. The method of claim 17 wherein the traffic flow data is obtained from roadside sensors.

25. The method of claim 17 wherein each segment on the graphical map is color coded to reflect its respective status.

26. The method of claim 17 wherein the traffic conditions include traffic incident information, the status of the segments in step (b) further include the traffic incident information, and step (d) further comprises simultaneously displaying on the graphical map of the road system:

(iii) the traffic incident information.

27. The method of claim 17 further comprising:

(e) obtaining weather radar data in a radial data format;

(f) translating the radial data into raster image format data, wherein the raster image format data is used in step (d).

28. An article of manufacture for simultaneously displaying on a graphical map (i) traffic flow data representing traffic conditions on a road system, and (ii) weather data, the road system encompassing a predefined geographical region, the article of manufacture comprising a computer-readable medium holding computer-executable instructions for performing a method comprising:

(a) creating a graphical map of the road system, the graphical map including one or more segments;

(b) determining a status of at least some of the segments on the graphical map, the status corresponding to traffic flow data associated with that segment;

(c) obtaining weather data for the geographical region corresponding to the road system; and

(d) simultaneously displaying on the graphical map of the road system;

(i) traffic flow data showing the status of at least some of the segments, and

(ii) the weather data showing weather conditions for at least some of the segments.

29. The article of manufacture of claim 28 wherein the graphical map of the road system is a 3D view.

30. The article of manufacture of claim 29 wherein steps (a) and (d) further include creating and displaying selected 3D landmarks that are within the geographical region.

31. The article of manufacture of claim 28 wherein each segment on the graphical map is animated to reflect its respective status by simulating different vehicle speeds that are representative of actual vehicle speeds.

32. The article of manufacture of claim 31 wherein each segment on the traffic flow map simulates vehicle densities that are representative of actual vehicle densities on the road system.

33. The article of manufacture of claim 28 wherein the weather data is displayed for the entire geographical region covered by the graphical map of the road system.

34. The article of manufacture of claim 28 wherein the graphical map of the road system is a 2D view.

35. The article of manufacture of claim 28 wherein the traffic flow data is obtained from roadside sensors.

36. The article of manufacture of claim 28 wherein each segment on the graphical map is color coded to reflect its respective status.

37. The article of manufacture of claim 28 wherein the traffic conditions include traffic incident information, the status of the segments in step (b) further include the traffic incident information, and step (d) further comprises simultaneously displaying on the graphical map of the road system:

(iii) the traffic incident information.

38. The article of manufacture of claim 28 further comprising:

(e) obtaining weather radar data in a radial data format;

(f) translating the radial data into raster image format data, wherein the raster image format data is used in step (d).
