Abstract

A method of providing content from an internet server to an internet user based on the user'"'"'s internet navigation history. The method begins with the step of installing a profile decoder, including a profile library, on the server. The profile decoder maps server content to content categories contained in the profile library. The server then receives a communication from a user then in internet communication with the server, at least a portion of that communication including an encrypted summary of user navigation history. The server then processes the user communication in the profile decoder to identify user content preferences by matching user content preferences with available server content, employing the profile server. Finally, the server provides content to the user based on the user'"'"'s identified preferences.

Claims

1. A method of providing content from an internet server to an internet user based on the user'"'"'s internet navigation history, comprising the steps of

installing a profile decoder, including a profile library, on the server;

mapping server content to content categories contained in the profile library;

receiving a communication from a user then in internet communication with the server, at least a portion of the communication comprising an encrypted summary of user navigation history;

processing the user communication in the profile decoder to identify user content preferences;

matching user content preferences with available server content, employing the profile server;

providing content to the user based on the user'"'"'s identified preferences.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the profile library contains a list of categories describing selected types of content.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the mapping server content step includes assigning categories from the category list to content resident on or accessible from the server.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein receiving a communication includes receiving a cookie containing encrypted text.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the matching step includes matching category information contained in the user communication with mapped category and content associations generated in the profile library.

6. A method of providing content from an internet server to an internet user based on the user'"'"'s internet navigation history, comprising the steps of

installing a profile decoder, including a profile library containing a list of categories, on the server;

mapping server content to content categories contained in the profile library by assigning categories from the category list to content resident on or accessible from the server;

receiving a communication from a user then in internet communication with the server, comprising a cookie containing an encrypted summary of user navigation history;

processing the user communication in the profile decoder to identify user content preferences;

matching user content preferences with available server content, employing the profile server;

providing content to the user based on the user'"'"'s identified preferences.

7. A system for providing content to an internet user, comprising:

a user computer, including a behavior tracking module adapted to track user navigation behavior on the internet and further adapted to summarize that information and communicate it to a server;

an internet server, including a profile library programmed for tasks including

accepting content category information and mapping such information to content available on or accessible from the server;

processing incoming user behavior information to match categories contained therein with category and content associations mapped therein; and

providing identified content to the user.
