1. A method for preparing substituted 3-cyanoquinolines comprising the step of reacting (i) a compound of formula H-Z-CH2)n

  • X, and (ii) a 3-cyanoquinoline intermediate having formula (Ia) embedded imagein the presence of a catalytic effective amount of an acid catalyst to produce a compound of formula (IIa) embedded imagewherein X is a bicyclic aryl or bicyclic heteroaryl ring system of 8 to 12 atoms where the bicyclic heteroaryl ring contains 1 to 4 heteroatoms selected from N, O, and S with the proviso that the bicyclic heteroaryl ring does not contain O—

    O, S—

    S, or S—
