Abstract

A data collection system is formed from an analyte detection meter and a base station. The meter and the base station are operatively connected to one another to transfer data from the meter. The base station is able to communicate transferred data to a data receiving server, and the transfer of data occurs in response to a defined stimulus such as the proximity of the meter and base station or an alarm set at a predetermined time of day. The data collection system can be used in combination with a system interface that provides a data management system (DMS) resident on a device such as a personal computer. The DMS can recognize a particular meter and may incorporate into the displayed information not only the data resident on the meter but also information previously transferred from the meter. The DMS may be launched on the computer as soon as connection with a meter is detected. The DMS may also reproduce the display of the particular meter on the display of the computer such that the user need only learn one set of controls. Changes to the setting of the meters may be accomplished through the computer and an update transferred and stored on the connected meter.

Claims

1. A data collection system comprising an analyte detection meter and a base station, wherein

(a) the meter and the base station are operatively connected to one another to transfer data from the meter,

(b) the base station comprises means for communicating transferred data to a data receiving server;

and

(c) transfer of data occurs in response to a defined stimulus.

2. The data collection system of claim 1, wherein the analyte meter is a glucose meter.

3. The data collection system of claim 2, wherein the connection between the meter and the base station is a wireless connection.

4. The data collection system of claim 3, wherein the defined stimulus is the depression of a button on the meter.

5. The data collection system of claim 3, wherein the defined stimulus is the depression of a button on the base station.

6. The data collection system of claim 3, wherein the defined stimulus is proximity of the meter to the base station such that a wireless signal from the meter can be detected by the base station and vice versa.

7. The data collection system of claim 6, wherein the base station is in a separate housing from the data receiving server and has no mechanism for displaying results to a user.

8. The data collection system of claim 3, wherein the defined stimulus is a wireless signal generated by the meter or the base station and received by the base station or meter respectively at a predetermined time of day.

9. The data collection system of claim 8, wherein the base station is in a separate housing from the data receiving server and has no mechanism for displaying results to a user.

10. The data collection system of claim 2, wherein the connection between the meter and the base station is a wired connection, and wherein the base station has a receptacle for receiving the meter to form the wired connection.

11. The data collection system of claim 2, further comprising a data receiving server, wherein the data receiving server receives data from the base station and analyzes the data to transmit to a remote location at least one type of message selected from the group consisting of:

(1) a message based on the number of tests done indicating that additional supplies may be needed by the user;

(2) a message that the number or frequency of tests performed is not in compliance with monitoring needs of the user,

(3) a message that the numerical values of the test results is greater or less than a target value such that medial attention may be necessary,

(4) a message communicating the number and nature of error codes, and

(5) a message representing annotations to the results.

12. The data collection system of claim 11, wherein the defined stimulus is the depression of a button on the meter.

13. The data collection system of claim 12, wherein the defined stimulus is the depression of a button on the base station.

14. The data collection system of claim 12, wherein the defined stimulus is proximity of the meter to the base station such that a wireless signal from the meter can be detected by the base station and vice versa.

15. The data collection system of claim 14, wherein the base station is in a separate housing from the data receiving server and has no mechanism for displaying results to a user.

16. The data collection system of claim 12, wherein the defined stimulus is a wireless signal generated by the meter or the base station and received by the base station or meter respectively at a predetermined time of day.

17. The data collection system of claim 16, wherein the base station is in a separate housing from the data receiving server and has no mechanism for displaying results to a user.

18. The data collection system of claim 11, wherein the connection between the meter and the base station is a wired connection, and wherein the base station has a receptacle for receiving the meter to form the wired connection.

19. The data collection system of claim 1, wherein base station further comprises means for communicating transferred data to the meter, and the meter comprises means for receiving the data.

20. The data collection system of claim 19, further comprising a data receiving server, wherein the data receiving server receives data from the base station and analyzes the data to transmit to a remote location at least one type of message selected from the group consisting of:

(1) a message based on the number of tests done indicating that additional supplies may be needed by the user;

(2) a message that the number or frequency of tests performed is not in compliance with monitoring needs of the user,

(3) a message that the numerical values of the test results is greater or less than a target value such that medial attention may be necessary,

(4) a message communicating the number and nature of error codes, and

(5) a message representing annotations to the results.

21. The data collection system of claim 20, wherein the data receiving server transmits information to the base station and the base station transmits that information to the meter, and wherein the information is selected from the group consisting of:

(i) a warning of non-compliance with established test scheduled;

(ii) a recommendation to begin, cease or alter treatment regimens,

(iii) a recommendation to alter the time at which self testing is done, and

(iii) an alert that more consumables for use with the test meter are needed.

22. The data collection system of claim 19, wherein the base station transmits information to the meter, and wherein the information is selected from the group consisting of:

(i) a warning of non-compliance with established test scheduled;

(ii) a recommendation to begin, cease or alter treatment regimens,

(iii) a recommendation to alter the time at which self testing is done, and

(iii) an alert that more consumables for use with the test meter are needed.

23. A combination of a meter and a computer wherein the computer exchanges data either directly or through a separate base station with the meter, wherein the meter and/or the computer are programmed to provide one or more of the following functions:

(a) automatic launch of data transfer and result display programs upon connection of the meter with the computer.

(b) linking of data transferred from the meter with stored data for a user based on recognition of the serial number of the meter or other user identification provided from the meter, and displaying of combined data from a data management system of the new and previously stored data for the user.

(c) retrieval of the meter configuration and presentation of the configuration on a display associated with the computer that is not the meter display in the same format as the meter display, and

(d) retrieval of the meter configuration and presentation of the configuration on a display associated with the computer that is not the meter display in the same format as the meter display, and updating of the meter to incorporate configuration changes entered via the computer rather than via the meter.

The combination of claim 23, wherein the computer is a data receiving server, and the combination further comprising a base station operatively connected to the meter to transfer data from the meter, said base station comprising means for communicating transferred data to the computer in response to a defined stimulus.

25. The combination of claim 24, wherein the connection between the meter and the base station is a wireless connection.

26. The combination of claim 25, wherein the defined stimulus is the depression of a button on the meter.

27. The combination of claim 25, wherein the defined stimulus is the depression of a button on the base station.

28. The combination of claim 25, wherein the defined stimulus is proximity of the meter to the base station such that a wireless signal from the meter can be detected by the base station and vice versa.

29. The combination of claim 28, wherein the base station is in a separate housing from the data receiving server and has no mechanism for displaying results to a user.

30. The combination of claim 25, wherein the defined stimulus is a wireless signal generated by the meter or the base station and received by the base station or meter respectively at a predetermined time of day.

31. The combination of claim 30, wherein the base station is in a separate housing from the data receiving server and has no mechanism for displaying results to a user.

32. The combination of claim 24, wherein the connection between the meter and the base station is a wired connection, and wherein the base station has a receptacle for receiving the meter to form the wired connection.

33. The combination of claim 24, wherein the computer receives data from the base station and analyzes the data to transmit to a remote location at least one type of message selected from the group consisting of:

(1) a message based on the number of tests done indicating that additional supplies may be needed by the user;

(2) a message that the number or frequency of tests performed is not in compliance with monitoring needs of the user, and

(3) a message that the numerical values of the test results is greater or less than a target value such that medial attention may be necessary.

34. The combination of claim 24, wherein base station further comprises means for communicating transferred data to the meter, and the meter comprises means for receiving the data.
