Abstract

An electronic device including a user interface having a display for displaying a standby screen when the device is in an idle state and a user input device, wherein the user interface provides a menu system, for re-configuring the standby screen, that is navigated using the user input device.

Claims

1. An electronic device comprising:

a user interface having a display for displaying a standby screen when the device is in an idle state and a user input device, wherein the user interface provides a menu system, for re-configuring the standby screen, that is navigated using the user input device.

2. An electronic device as claimed in claim 1, wherein the screen comprises a plurality of zones and the menu system provides for the movement and re-sizing of the zones.

3. An electronic device as claimed in claim 2, wherein the menu system provides for the movement and re-sizing of the zones, one zone at a time.

4. An electronic device as claimed in claim 1, wherein the standby screen comprises a plurality of items and the menu system comprises an option for modifying an attribute of a selected item.

5. An electronic device as claimed in claim 4, wherein the menu system comprises an option for selecting one of the plurality of items from a list of the plurality of items.

6. An electronic device as claimed in claim 4, wherein the attribute for modification is selected from a list of possible attributes in the menu.

7. An electronic device as claimed in claim 4, wherein modifying an attribute modifies the value associated with the attribute, the value being selected from a predetermined list of possible attribute values in the menu.

8. An electronic device as claimed in claim 4, wherein the attribute is size and/or location of the selected item in the standby screen.

9. An electronic device as claimed in claim 1, wherein the standby screen comprises a plurality of items and the menu system comprises an option for deleting a selected one of the plurality of items.

10. An electronic device as claimed in claim 9, wherein the menu system comprises an option for selecting one of the plurality of items, for deletion, from a list of the plurality of items.

11. An electronic device as claimed in claim 1, wherein the standby screen comprises a plurality of items and the menu system comprises an option for adding an item to the plurality of items.

12. An electronic device as claimed in claim 1, wherein the device operates as any one or more of:

a mobile cellular telephone, a personal digital assistant, a computer.

13. A method for re-configuring the standby screen of an electronic device comprising:

providing a menu system, for re-configuring the standby screen, that is navigated using a user input device; and

displaying the standby screen when the device is in an idle state.

14. A method as claimed in claim 13, wherein the standby screen comprises a plurality of zones and the menu system provides for the movement and re-sizing of the zones.

15. A method as claimed in claim 14, wherein the menu system provides for the movement and re-sizing of the zones, one zone at a time.

16. A method as claimed in claim 13, wherein the standby screen comprises a plurality of items and the menu system comprises an option for modifying an attribute of a selected item.

17. A method as claimed in claim 16, wherein the menu system comprises an option for selecting one of the plurality of items from a list of the plurality of items.

18. A method as claimed in claim 13, wherein the standby screen comprises a plurality of items and the menu system comprises an option for deleting a selected one of the plurality of items.

19. A method as claimed in claim 13, wherein the standby screen comprises a plurality of items and the menu system comprises an option for adding an item to the plurality of items.

20. A computer program for re-configuring the standby screen of an electronic device comprising:

computer program instructions that provide a menu system, for re-configuring the standby screen, that is navigable using a user input device.

21. A computer program as claimed in claim 20, wherein the menu system provides for the movement and re-sizing of zones of the standby screen.

22. A computer program as claimed in claim 21, wherein the menu system provides for the movement and re-sizing of the zones, one zone at a time.

23. A computer program as claimed in claim 20, wherein the menu system comprises an option for modifying an attribute of an item selected from a plurality of items present in the standby screen.

24. A computer program as claimed in claim 23, wherein the menu system comprises an option for selecting an items from a list of the plurality of items.

25. A computer program as claimed in claim 20, wherein the menu system comprises an option for deleting an item selected from a plurality of items present in the standby screen.

26. A computer program as claimed in claim 20, wherein the menu system comprises an option for adding an item selected to a plurality of items present in the standby screen.

27. An electronic device comprising:

a display for displaying a standby screen;

a memory for storing data defining the standby screen;

a user input device; and

a processor for using the stored data to control the content of the standby screen on the display and for automatically modifying the stored data in a predetermined way, to re-configure the standby screen, in response to a predetermined user input via the user input device.

28. An electronic device as claimed in claim 27, wherein the automatic modification of the stored data modifies the layout of the standby screen.

29. An electronic device as claimed in claim 27, wherein the stored data is modifiable in a plurality of predetermined ways a way being associated with a different option selectable by the user from a menu using the user input device

30. An electronic device as claimed in claim 27, wherein the standby screen comprises a plurality of items and the processor provides a menu system comprising an option for modifying an attribute of a selected item defined by the stored data.

31. An electronic device as claimed in claim 30, wherein the menu system comprises an option for selecting one of the plurality of items from a list of the plurality of items.

32. An electronic device as claimed in claim 30, wherein the attribute for modification is selected from a list of possible attributes in the menu.

33. An electronic device as claimed in claim 30, wherein modifying an attribute modifies the value associated with the attribute, the value being selected from a predetermined list of possible attribute values in the menu.

34. An electronic device as claimed in claim 30, wherein the attribute is size and/or location of the selected item in the standby screen.

35. An electronic device as claimed in claim 27, wherein the stored data is XML code.

36. An electronic device as claimed in claim 27, wherein the memory is a removable for transfer to another device.

37. A method for re-configuring a standby screen of an electronic device comprising:

storing data defining the standby screen;

automatically modifying the stored data in a predetermined way, to re-configure the standby screen, in response to a predetermined user input via a user input device; and

displaying the standby screen using the modified stored data.

38. A method as claimed in claim 37, wherein automatically modifying the stored data modifies the layout of the standby screen.

39. A method as claimed in claim 37, wherein the stored data is modifiable in a plurality of predetermined ways a way being associated with a different option selectable by the user from a menu using the user input device.

40. A method as claimed in claim 37, wherein the standby screen comprises a plurality of items and the processor provides a menu system comprising an option for modifying an attribute of a selected item defined by the stored data.

41. A computer program for re-configuring a standby screen of an electronic device comprising:

computer program instructions for automatically modifying predetermined data in a predetermined way, to re-configure the standby screen, in response to a predetermined user input via a user input device.

42. A computer program as claimed in claim 41, associating predetermined ways for automatically modifying the predetermined data with different options selectable from a menu.
