Abstract

A recording medium, and a method and apparatus for recording/reproducing data in/from the recording medium are disclosed. The recording medium includes one or more recording layers, and a management area including management information, wherein the management information includes specific information indicating a presence of different format and type of recording layer in the recording medium. The management area is located at a specific recording layer. The format represents a different category in a recording layer and the type is classified by read-only or writable in a recording layer.

Claims

1. A recording medium comprising:

one or more recording layers,

a management area, located at a specific recording layer, including management information,

wherein the management information includes specific information indicating a presence of different format and type of recording layer in the recording medium,

wherein the format represents a different category in a recording layer and the type is classified by read-only or writable in a recording layer.

2. The recording medium according to claim 1, wherein the different category is one of CD and DVD.

3. The recording medium according to claim 2, wherein the recording medium includes one or more BD recording layers.

4. The recording medium according to claim 3, wherein the management area is located at the BD layer.

5. The recording medium according to claim 4, wherein the management area is a PIC (Permanent Information &

Control data) area.

6. The recording medium according to claim 4, wherein the management area is a BCA (Burst Cutting Area) area.

7. The recording medium according to claim 4, wherein the BD layer is located at about 0.1 mm, wherein the different format and type of recording layer is located at the upper portion than the BD layer in the recording medium if the specific information indicates the presence of different format and type.

8. The recording medium according to claim 7, wherein the different format and type of recording layer is located at about 0.6 mm if the specific information indicates the presence of DVD format layer.

9. The recording medium according to claim 7, wherein the different format and type of recording layer is located at about 1.2 mm if the specific information indicates the presence of CD format layer.

10. The recording medium according to claim 1, wherein the management information further includes information indicating the number of layers of the recording medium.

11. The recording medium according to claim 9, wherein the information indicates the number of layers of same format

12. The recording medium according to claim 1, wherein

the type is one of a BD-ROM (Read Only Memory) type, a BD-R (Recordable) type, and a BD-RE (Rewritable) type if the specific information indicates the presence of same type of recording layer.

13. The recording medium according to claim 1, wherein the type is one of a CD-ROM (Read Only Memory) type, a CD-R (Recordable) type, and a CD-RW (Rewritable) type if the specific information indicates the presence of different type of recording layer.

14. The recording medium according to claim 1, wherein the type is one of a DVD-ROM (Read Only Memory) type, a DVD Write once type, and a DVD Rewritable type if the specific information indicates the presence of different type of recording layer.

15. A method for reproducing data from a recording medium comprising:

a) reading management information indicating a presence of different format and type of the recording layer in the recording medium from a management area of the recording medium, wherein the management information is located at a specific layer of the recording medium, wherein the format represents a different category in a recording layer and the type is classified by read-only or writable in a recording layer;

b) checking whether the recording medium includes the different format and type in a recording layer based on the management information; and

c) determining a reproducing mode to reproduce data from the different format and type of recording layer as a result of the step b).

16. The method according to claim 15, wherein the management area is located at a lower portion among several recording layers, wherein the step a) reads the management information at the lower side.

17. The method according to claim 15, wherein the step c) determines the reproducing mode related to CD format to reproduce data from the recording layer if the step b) checks that the recording medium includes at least recording layer of CD format.

18. The method according to claim 15, wherein the step c) determines the reproducing mode related to DVD format to reproduce data from the recording layer if the step b) checks that the recording medium includes at least recording layer of DVD format.

19. A method for recording data in a recording medium comprising:

a) reading management information indicating a presence of different format and type of the recording layer in the recording medium from a management area of the recording medium, wherein the management information is located at a specific layer of the recording medium, wherein the format represents a different category in a recording layer and the type is classified by read-only or writable in a recording layer;

b) checking whether the recording medium includes the different format and type in a recording layer based on the management information; and

c) determining a recording mode to record data from the different format and type of recording layer as a result of the step b).

20. The method according to claim 19, wherein the management area is located at a lower side among several recording layers, wherein the step a) reads the management information at the lower side.

21. The method according to claim 19, wherein the step c) determines a recording mode related to CD format to record data from the recording layer if the step b) checks that the recording medium includes at least recording layer of CD format.

22. The method according to claim 19, wherein the step c) determines a recording mode related to DVD format to record data from the recording layer if the step b) checks that the recording medium includes at least recording layer of DVD format.

23. An apparatus for reproducing data from a recording medium comprising:

a control unit checking whether the recording medium includes a different format and type in a recording layer based on a management information, the management information indicating a presence of different format and type of the recording layer in the recording medium, wherein the format represents a different category in a recording layer and the type is classified by read-only or writable in a recording layer, and determining a reproducing mode to reproduce data from the different format and type of recording layer; and

a processor processing data according to the determined reproducing mode.

24. An apparatus for recording data in a recording medium comprising:

a control unit checking whether the recording medium includes a different format and type in a recording layer based on a management information, the management information indicating a presence of different format and type of the recording layer in the recording medium, wherein the format represents a different category in a recording layer and the type is classified by read-only or writable in a recording layer, and determining a recording mode to record data from the different format and type of recording layer; and

a processor processing data according to the determined record mode.
