Abstract

Methods and apparatus that integrate management frameworks with an enterprise manager in a grid computing environment are disclosed. According to one aspect of the present invention, a grid computing system includes a management arrangement and at least a first management framework. The management arrangement includes an integration arrangement that brokers requests. The first management framework sends a first request to the integration arrangement which effectively allows the first management framework to communicate bi-directionally with the management arrangement.

Claims

1. A grid computing system comprising:

a management arrangement, the management arrangement including an integration arrangement, the integration arrangement being arranged to broker requests; and

at least a first management framework, the first management framework being arranged to send a first request to the integration arrangement, the integration arrangement being arranged to enable the first management framework to communicate bi-directionally with the management arrangement.

2. The grid computing system of claim 1 further including a second management framework, the second management framework being in communication with the integration arrangement, the integration arrangement being arranged to enable the first management framework to communicate bi-directionally with the second management framework, the integration arrangement further being arranged to enable the second management framework to communicate bi-directionally with the management arrangement.

3. The grid computing system of claim 2 wherein the integration arrangement is arranged to broker requests across the first management framework and the second management framework.

4. The grid computing system of claim 2 wherein the integration arrangement is arranged to broker the first request to the management arrangement and to the second management framework.

5. The grid computing system of claim 1 wherein the management arrangement includes an enterprise manager that is in communication with the integration arrangement, and the first management framework does not have a point-to-point connection with the enterprise manager.

6. The grid computing system of claim 5 wherein the management arrangement includes a management repository in communication with enterprise manager, the management repository being arranged to store a state associated with the first management framework.

7. The grid computing system of claim 5 wherein the management arrangement includes a plurality of brokers, the plurality of brokers being arranged to facilitate communication between the integration arrangement and the enterprise manager.

8. The grid computing system of claim 1 wherein the management arrangement is an enterprise manager.

9. The grid computing system of claim 1 wherein the request is in the form of a model and wherein the integration arrangement includes a transformer, the transformer being arranged to enable the model to be transformed into a format associated with the enterprise manager.

10. The grid computing system of claim 1 wherein the grid computing system is an enterprise grid computing system.

11. An integration arrangement, the integration arrangement being arranged to be used in a grid computing system, the integration arrangement being in communication with a plurality of management frameworks and a manager, the integration arrangement comprising:

a grid integration broker, the grid integration broker being arranged to broker a request across the plurality of management frameworks and the enterprise manager; and

a management service, the management service being arranged to interpret the request and to provide the request to the manager.

12. The integration arrangement of claim 11 wherein the grid integration broker is arranged to expose a web service to the plurality of management frameworks, wherein the plurality management frameworks are arranged to invoke the web service.

13. The integration arrangement of claim 11 wherein the grid integration broker includes a first transformer associated with a first management framework of the plurality of management frameworks, and wherein the request is initiated by the first management framework and the first transformer is arranged to transform the request into a model in a format associated with the manager.

14. A method of operating an integration arrangement in a grid computing system, the integration arrangement being in communication with a first management framework and a manager, the integration arrangement being arranged to broker requests within the grid computing system, the method comprising:

receiving a request from the first management framework

providing the request to the manager, the manager being arranged to provide information associated with the request

receiving the information from the manager; and

providing the information to the first management framework.

15. The method of claim 14 wherein the integration arrangement is in communication with a second management framework, and wherein providing the request to the manager includes brokering the request to the second management framework, the second management framework being arranged to substantially fulfill the request.

16. The method of claim 15 wherein the integration arrangement includes an integration broker that brokers the request across the first management framework and the second management framework.

17. The method of claim 14 further including:

registering the first management framework.

18. The method of claim 18 wherein registering the first management framework includes receiving a transformer from the first management framework, and wherein the method further includes transforming the request to a format associated with the manager using the transformer before sending the request to the manager.

19. A method for integrating a management framework with an integration arrangement in a grid computing system, the grid computing system further including a manager, the method comprising:

obtaining a desired state associated with the management framework;

providing the desired state to the manager;

obtaining an observed state from the manager, the observed state being associated with the management framework; and

providing the observed state to the management framework.

20. The method of claim 19 wherein the grid computing system is an enterprise grid computing system and the manager is an enterprise manager.

21. The method of claim 19 wherein the integration arrangement includes an integration broker and a management service, the integration broker being arranged to broker requests initiated by the management framework, the management service being arranged to interpret models associated with the requests.

22. An integration arrangement in a grid computing system, the integration arrangement being in communication with a first management framework and a manager, the integration arrangement being arranged to broker requests within the grid computing system, the integration arrangement comprising:

means for receiving a request from the first management framework;

means for providing the request to the manager, the manager being arranged to provide information associated with the request;

means for receiving the information from the manager; and

means for providing the information to the first management framework.

23. The integration arrangement of claim 22 wherein the integration arrangement is in communication with a second management framework, and wherein the means for providing the request to the manager include means for brokering the request to the second management framework, the second management framework being arranged to substantially fulfill the request.

24. A computer program product for brokering requests within the grid computing system, the computer program product comprising:

code devices that cause a request to be obtained from a first management framework;

code devices that cause the request to be provided to a manager, the manager being arranged to provide information associated with the request;

code devices that cause the information to be received from the manager;

code devices that cause the information to be provided to the first management framework; and

a computer-readable medium that stores the code devices.
