Abstract

A haptic feedback planar touch control used to provide input to a computer. A touch input device includes a planar touch surface that inputs a position signal to a processor of the computer based on a location of user contact on the touch surface. The computer can position a cursor in a displayed graphical environment based at least in part on the position signal, or perform a different function. At least one actuator is also coupled to the touch input device and outputs a force to provide a haptic sensation to the user contacting the touch surface. The touch input device can be a touchpad separate from the computer'"'"'s display screen, or can be a touch screen. Output haptic sensations on the touch input device can include pulses, vibrations, and spatial textures. The touch input device can include multiple different regions to control different computer functions.

Claims

1. A handheld device comprising:

a housing;

an input device coupled to the housing, the input device configured to receive user input and generate an input signal based on the user input; and

an actuator coupled to the housing, the actuator configured to impart haptic forces to the housing based on the input signal.

2. The device of claim 1, wherein the handheld device is a remote control configured to communicate with another device.

3. The device of claim 1, wherein the handheld device is a cellular telephone.

4. The device of claim 1, wherein the handheld device is a personal digital assistant (PDA).

5. The device of claim 1, wherein the handheld device is a pager.

6. The device of claim 1, wherein the handheld device is a game controller.

7. The device of claim 1, wherein the input device is a touch pad, the device further including an electronic display distinct from the touch pad and configured to provide visual information.

8. The device of claim 1, wherein the input device is a touch screen.

9. The device of claim 1, wherein the input device is a keypad.

10. The device of claim 1, wherein the input device is a button.

11. The device of claim 1, wherein said haptic force is in a direction substantially orthogonal to a surface of the housing to which the actuator is coupled.

12. The device of claim 1, wherein said haptic force is in a direction substantially parallel to a surface of the housing to which the actuator is coupled.

13. The device of claim 1, wherein said actuator is a linear actuator.

14. The device of claim 1, wherein said actuator is a rotary actuator.

15. The device of claim 1, wherein said actuator includes a piezo-electric component.

16. The device of claim 1, wherein said actuator includes a voice coil.

17. The device of claim 1, wherein said actuator includes a pager motor.

18. The device of claim 1, wherein said actuator includes a solenoid.

19. A handheld device comprising:

a housing;

an input device coupled to the housing, the input device configured to receive user input and generate an input signal based on the user input;

a first actuator coupled to the housing and configured to impart haptic force to the housing based on a first actuation signal; and

a second actuator coupled to the input device and configured to impart haptic force to the input device based on a second actuation signal,

wherein the first actuation signal and/or the second actuation signal is based on the input signal.

20. The device of claim 19, wherein the handheld device is a remote control configured to communicate with another device.

21. The device of claim 19, wherein the handheld device is a cellular telephone.

22. The device of claim 19, wherein the handheld device is a personal digital assistant (PDA).

23. The device of claim 19, wherein the handheld device is a pager.

24. The device of claim 19, wherein the handheld device is a game controller.

25. The device of claim 19, wherein the input device is a touch pad, the device further including an electronic display distinct from the touch pad and configured to provide visual information.

26. The device of claim 19, wherein the input device is a touch screen.

27. The device of claim 19, wherein the input device is a keypad.

28. The device of claim 19, wherein the input device is a button.

29. The device of claim 19, wherein said haptic force imparted by the first actuator is in a direction substantially orthogonal to a surface of the housing to which the actuator is coupled.

30. The device of claim 19, wherein said haptic force imparted by the first actuator is in a direction substantially parallel to a surface of the housing to which the actuator is coupled.

31. The device of claim 19, wherein at least one of said first or second actuators said is a linear actuator.

32. The device of claim 19, wherein at least one of said first or second actuators is a rotary actuator.

33. The device of claim 19, wherein at least one of said first or second actuators includes a piezo-electric component.

34. The device of claim 19, wherein at least one of said first or second actuators includes a voice coil.

35. The device of claim 19, wherein at least one of said first or second actuators includes a pager motor.

36. The device of claim 19, wherein at least one of said first or second actuators includes a solenoid.
