Abstract

Device and method for protecting an occupant seated on a seat of a vehicle which includes an airbag arranged to deploy to protect the occupant in the event of a crash involving the vehicle, a first sensor system for detecting presence of the occupant, a second sensor system connected to the seatbelt for obtaining information about seatbelt spool out, and a processor coupled to the first and second sensor systems and arranged to control deployment of the airbag based on the presence of the occupant and the information about seatbelt spool out. The second sensor system may be arranged to measure a length of the seatbelt pulled out of a seatbelt retractor and include an encoder arranged on a shaft around which the seatbelt is wound and a receptor arranged to generate a signal when a line on the encoder passes by the receptor.

Claims

1. In combination with a motor vehicle including a vehicle seat and a seatbelt assigned to the seat, a device for protecting a vehicle occupant seated on the seat, comprising:

an airbag arranged to deploy to protect the occupant on the seat in the event of a crash involving the vehicle;

a first sensor system for detecting presence of the occupant on the seat;

a second sensor system connected to said seatbelt for obtaining information about seatbelt spool out; and

a processor coupled to said first and second sensor systems and arranged to control deployment of said airbag based on the presence of the occupant on the seat and the information about seatbelt spool out.

2. The device of claim 1, wherein said first sensor system includes an ultrasonic or electromagnetic sensor.

3. The device of claim 1, wherein said first sensor system is arranged to determine the position of the occupant, said processor being arranged to control deployment of said airbag based on the presence and position of the occupant on the seat and the information about seatbelt spool out.

4. The device of claim 1, wherein said first sensor system is arranged in front of the seat.

5. The device of claim 1, wherein said first sensor system includes a plurality of sensors arranged at different locations.

6. The device of claim 1, wherein said second sensor system is arranged to measure a length of the seatbelt pulled out of a seatbelt retractor.

7. The device of claim 6, wherein said second sensor system includes an encoder arranged on a shaft around which the seatbelt is wound and a receptor arranged to generate a signal when a line on said encoder passes by said receptor.

8. A method for controlling deployment of an airbag in a motor vehicle, comprising:

detecting presence of an occupant to be protected by the airbag;

obtaining information about spool out of a seatbelt associated with a seat on which the occupant is seated; and

controlling deployment of the airbag based on the detected presence of the occupant and the obtained information about seatbelt spool out.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein the presence of the occupant is detected by means of a sensor system.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the sensor system includes an ultrasonic or electromagnetic sensor and the presence of the occupant is detected based on waves received by the ultrasonic or electromagnetic sensor.

11. The method of claim 9, further comprising arranging the sensor system in front of the seat.

12. The method of claim 9, wherein the sensor system includes a plurality of sensors, further comprising arranging the sensors at different locations.

13. The method of claim 8, further comprising determining the position of the occupant and controlling deployment of the airbag based on the detected presence of the occupant, the determined position of the occupant and the obtained information about seatbelt spool out.

14. The method of claim 8, wherein the information about spool out of the seatbelt is obtained by means of a sensor system connected to the seatbelt.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein the sensor system is arranged to measure a length of the seatbelt pulled out of a seatbelt retractor.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein the sensor system includes an encoder arranged on a shaft around which the seatbelt is wound and a receptor arranged to generate a signal when a line on the encoder passes by the receptor.

17. A method for controlling deployment of an airbag in a motor vehicle designed to protect an occupant of the vehicle during a crash involving the vehicle, comprising:

obtaining information about spool out of a seatbelt associated with a seat on which the occupant is seated; and

controlling deployment of the airbag based on the obtained information about seatbelt spool out.

18. The method of claim 17, further comprising detecting presence of an occupant to be protected by the airbag by means of a sensor system, deployment of the airbag being controlled based on the detected presence of the occupant and the obtained information about seatbelt spool out.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein the sensor system includes an ultrasonic or electromagnetic sensor and the presence of the occupant is detected based on waves received by the ultrasonic or electromagnetic sensor.

20. The method of claim 17, wherein the information about spool out of the seatbelt is obtained by means of a sensor system connected to the seatbelt and arranged to measure a length of the seatbelt pulled out of a seatbelt retractor.
