1. A compression system in a telecommunications device for receiving a plurality of telephone signals having voice signals or data signals or a combination of both, comprising:

  • a digital signal processor that comprises a compression selector processor configured to receive a telephone signal, including a monitor and a control unit, wherein the monitor is configured to detect a data signal and to inform the control unit of the presence of the data signal, whereby the control unit identifies a speed type of the detected data signal by its characteristic modem answer tones; and

    a plurality of codecs, including a first codec for voice signal compression coding and decoding, and a second codec for data signal compression coding and decoding; and

    a channel forming processor configured to perform dynamic timeslot allocation of the data signals and the voice signals for transmitting each of the telephone signals on a respective communication channel, wherein each communication channel is formed on at least one transmit radio frequency (RF) carrier, each RF carrier having a plurality of information slots and at least one of the information slots is assigned to one of the telephone signals;

    whereby the control unit initiates a set-up of a communication channel by sending a signal to the channel forming processor and the control unit selects which codec will process the voice compression and the data compression coding and decoding.
