Abstract

Systems and methods are described for intelligent default selection of characters to be entered via an on-screen keyboard. Based on one to several criteria, a character most likely to be selected for entry via the on-screen keyboard during a search request is determined and a selector is positioned at that particular character. If that character is indeed the character the user wishes to enter, the user does not have to execute any navigation steps to enter the character, but can—with a single actuation—enter that character. In many instances, the user will only have to enter the selection without first having to navigate to the selection. As a result, the number of times buttons need to be actuated by the user to enter a character string can be significantly reduced.

Claims

1. A graphical user interface, comprising:

a character entry field configured to display one or more characters entered as a search term by a user to search for a content item;

character selection means configured to allow the user to select one or more characters for entry into the character entry field;

wherein the character selection means provides a default character to the user such that the user may select the default character with a single actuation, the default character being selected as a most likely choice to be entered by the user based on previous characters selected and content items available for matching the search term.

2. The graphical user interface as recited in claim 1, wherein the character selection means further comprises:

an on-screen keyboard that displays characters available for selection; and

a selector configured to be situated in relation to an on-screen keyboard character so that the single actuation selects the on-screen keyboard character situated relative to the selector.

3. The graphical user interface as recited in claim 1, wherein the character selection means further comprises:

an on-screen keyboard having a character selection field that displays a character from a set of characters available for selection; and

a selector configured to change the character to any character included in the set of characters available for selection; and

wherein the single actuation selects the character displayed in the character selection field.

4. The graphical user interface as recited in claim 1, further comprising a “

new search”

button configured to initiate a search.

5. The graphical user interface as recited in claim 1, further comprising one or more content item description fields each configured to display a character string associated with a content item available for matching previous characters in the search term.

6. The graphical user interface as recited in claim 5, wherein the one or more content item description fields are selectable by the user to access the content item associated with the character string associated with the content item description field.
