Abstract

Methods, apparatus, and systems for repairing defective occlusions are provided. One embodiment includes an elongate body having a first lumen extending from a proximal end toward a distal end of the elongate body. An elongate structure, having a lumen extending from a proximal end toward a distal end of the elongate structure, is extendably and rotatably positioned at least partially within the first lumen of the elongate body. An energy emitting device is coupled to a portion of the elongate body proximal the distal end of the elongate body to emit focused ultrasound.

Claims

1. An occlusion device, comprising:

an elongate body having a first lumen extending from a proximal end toward a distal end of the elongate body;

an elongate structure having a lumen, the elongate structure extendably and rotatably positioned at least partially within the first lumen of the elongate body; and

an energy emitting device extendably coupled to a portion of the elongate body proximal to the distal end of the elongate body.

2. The occlusion device of claim 1, where the elongate body includes a wall that extends from the distal end towards the proximal end to a surface defining a ledge that extends away from the wall, the wall including a surface defining a first opening.

3. The occlusion device of claim 2, where the elongate body includes a second lumen extending from the first opening and through the elongate body.

4. The apparatus of claim 3, where the elongate body includes a surface defining a channel extending longitudinally between the first lumen and the second lumen.

5. The apparatus of claim 4, where the elongate structure includes a flexible portion along which the elongate structure bends under a compression force to push the elongate structure away from the channel of the elongate body.

6. The occlusion device of claim 4, where the elongate body includes a third lumen extending from the proximal end and toward the ledge of the elongate body.

7. The occlusion device of claim 6, including a tissue apposition member that extends away from the ledge when extended from the third lumen.

8. The occlusion device of claim 7, where the tissue apposition member includes a suction arm.

9. The occlusion device of claim 1, where the elongate body includes an extendable portion proximal to the distal end of the elongate body.

10. The occlusion device of claim 1, where the elongate structure includes a tissue apposition member extendably positioned within the lumen of the elongate structure.

11. The occlusion device of claim 10, where the tissue apposition member includes an elongate body having a lumen extending from a proximal end toward a distal end, the distal end including a piercing structure, and a pulling member extendably positioned within the lumen of the tissue apposition member.

12. A high intensity focused ultrasound system, comprising:

an elongate body having a lumen;

a tissue apposition member extendably positioned within the lumen of the elongate body, the tissue apposition member for apposing tissues of a septum secundum and a septum primum; and

an energy emitting device for emitting high intensity focused ultrasound to the apposed tissues, where the energy emitting device is physically separated from the elongate body and the tissue apposition member.

13. The system of claim 12, where the tissue apposition member includes a lumen, the lumen including an extendably positioned pulling member.

14. The system of claim 12, where the tissue apposition member includes a suction arm extendably positioned within the lumen of the tissue apposition member.

15. The system of claim 12, including a targeting device configured to provide a target for the high intensity focused ultrasound.

16. The system of claim 15, where the targeting device provides an image of the target.

17. A system, comprising:

a catheter including;

an elongate body having a lumen; and

an occlusion device extendably positioned within the lumen of the elongate body, the occlusion device for apposing tissues of a defective occlusion, the opposed tissues providing a target;

an energy emitting device configured to emit focused ultrasound at a high intensity to the target; and

a targeting device configured to locate and guide the focused ultrasound to the target.

18. The system of claim 17, where the targeting device includes a magnetic resonance imaging device.

19. The system of claim 17, where the targeting device includes an imaging ultrasound device.

20. The system of claim 17, where the targeting device includes a monitoring functionality configured to monitor physical changes to the target induced by the focused ultrasound.

21. The system of claim 17, where the energy emitting device is configured to emit the focused ultrasound to the target from outside a human body.

22. The system of claim 17, where the energy emitting device is configured to emit the focused ultrasound to the target from within a human body.

23. The system of claim 17, where the energy emitting device configured to emit the focused ultrasound includes the targeting device.

24. The system of claim 17, where the occlusion device includes a tissue apposition member extendably positioned within a lumen of an elongate body of the occlusion device.

25. The system of claim 24, where the tissue apposition member includes a pulling member extendably positioned within a lumen of the tissue apposition member.

26. The system of claim 25, where the pulling member includes a predefined shape configured to manipulate tissues of the defective occlusion.

27. A method for occluding a patent foramen ovale, comprising:

seating an occlusion device on a limbus of a septum secundum; and

applying energy to the septum secundum and a septum primum to fuse the septum secundum and the septum primum together.

28. The method of claim 27, where seating the occlusion device includes:

extending an elongate structure substantially perpendicular to the septum secundum; and

extending a tissue apposition member through the septum secundum and the septum primum.

29. The method of claim 27, where extending the tissue apposition member through the septum secundum and the septum primum includes extending a pulling member from the tissue apposition member and manipulating the pulling member to bring the tissues together.

30. The method of claim 27, where applying energy includes applying high intensity focused ultrasound to the septum secundum and the septum primum.

31. A method for occluding a patent foramen ovale in a heart, comprising:

bringing tissues of a septum secundum and septum primum together; and

fusing the tissues of the septum secundum and the septum primum together using high intensity focused ultrasound emitted from outside a human body.

32. The method of claim 31, including targeting the tissues with a targeting device.

33. The method of claim 32, where bringing the tissues of the septum secundum and the septum primum together includes bringing the tissues together after emitting the high intensity focused ultrasound.

34. The method of claim 31, including keeping the tissue together after emitting the high intensity focused ultrasound to allow the tissue to fuse.

35. The method of claim 31, including targeting various locations of the tissues.

36. The method of claim 35, including emitting the high intensity focused ultrasound at the targeted various locations of the tissues.

37. The method of claim 36, including monitoring the targeted various locations for changes to the tissues induced by the high intensity focused ultrasound.
