CONNECTOR WITH A SHORTING TERMINAL
First Claim
1. A connector for connection with a mating connector having a mating housing (40), mating terminals (42) in the mating housing (40) and a shorting terminal (43) for shorting the mating terminals (42), the connector comprising:
- a housing (10) having a front end for connection with the mating housing (40), at least one guiding hole (24) extending through the housing (10) in a front to rear direction, at least one resilient piece (18) on the housing (10) and a restricting portion (22) formed on the resilient piece (18); and
a releasing member (27) having at least one unlocking piece (29) slidably engaged in the guiding hole (24) for guiding forward and rearward movement of the releasing member (27) relative to the housing (10), the releasing member (27) engaging the restricting portion (22) when the resilient piece (18) is in a first position for limiting forward movement of the releasing member (27) relative to the housing (10), the resilient piece (18) being deflected to a second position when the housing (10) is connected with the mating housing (40) for disengaging the releasing member (27) from the restricting portion (22) and permitting forward movement of the releasing member (27) relative to the housing (10), whereby the forward movement of the releasing member (27) enables the unlocking piece (29) to deflect the shorting terminal (43) away from the terminal fittings (42) for releasing a shorted state of the terminal fittings (42) when the housing (10) is connected properly with the mating housing (40).

Abstract
A first housing (10) is formed with guiding holes (24) through which a releasing member (27) is inserted while being held in contact therewith in a movable range between a standby area and a releasing position. In the process of connecting the first housing (10) and a second housing (40), the releasing member (27) comes into engagement with the second housing (40), thereby being displaced backward relative to the first housing (10). Since the first housing (10) is formed with the guiding holes (24) through which the releasing member (27) is inserted while being held in contact therewith, the releasing member (27) is smoothly moved without being displaced and being forced.

1. A connector for connection with a mating connector having a mating housing (40), mating terminals (42) in the mating housing (40) and a shorting terminal (43) for shorting the mating terminals (42), the connector comprising:

a housing (10) having a front end for connection with the mating housing (40), at least one guiding hole (24) extending through the housing (10) in a front to rear direction, at least one resilient piece (18) on the housing (10) and a restricting portion (22) formed on the resilient piece (18); and
a releasing member (27) having at least one unlocking piece (29) slidably engaged in the guiding hole (24) for guiding forward and rearward movement of the releasing member (27) relative to the housing (10), the releasing member (27) engaging the restricting portion (22) when the resilient piece (18) is in a first position for limiting forward movement of the releasing member (27) relative to the housing (10), the resilient piece (18) being deflected to a second position when the housing (10) is connected with the mating housing (40) for disengaging the releasing member (27) from the restricting portion (22) and permitting forward movement of the releasing member (27) relative to the housing (10), whereby the forward movement of the releasing member (27) enables the unlocking piece (29) to deflect the shorting terminal (43) away from the terminal fittings (42) for releasing a shorted state of the terminal fittings (42) when the housing (10) is connected properly with the mating housing (40). - View Dependent Claims (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9)

10. A connector assembly, comprising:

a first housing (10) having opposite front and rear ends, first terminal fittings (14) mounted in the first housing (10), at least one resilient piece (18) projecting forward on the first housing (10) and a restricting portion (22) formed on the resilient piece (18);
a second housing (40) having a connecting recess (41) for receiving the first housing (10), second terminal fittings (42) projecting into the connecting recess (41) and being connectable with the first terminal fittings (14) when the first housing (10) is inserted into the connecting recess (41), a resiliently deflectable shorting terminal (43) mounted in the second housing (40) for shorting the second terminal fittings (42); and
a releasing member (27) mounted movably in the first housing (10) and having at least one forwardly projecting unlocking piece (29), the restricting portion (22) of the first housing (10) engaging the releasing member (27) and preventing forward movement of the releasing member (27) when the first housing (10) is not connected with the second housing (40), the restricting portion (22) being disengaged from the releasing member (27) when the first housing (10) is connected with the second housing (40) for permitting movement of the releasing member (27) into a position where the unlocking piece (29) deforms the shorting terminal (43) away from the second terminal fittings (42). - View Dependent Claims (11, 12, 13, 14, 15)

16. A connector assembly, comprising:

a mating housing (40) having a front end and a connecting recess (41) extending into the front end, a locking recess (44) formed in the connecting recess (41), terminal fittings (42) projecting into the connecting recess (41) and a resiliently deflectable shorting terminal (43) mounted in the second housing (40) for shorting the second terminal fittings (42);
a first housing (10) having a front end configured for insertion into the connecting recess (41), at least one resilient piece (18) projecting forward on the first housing (10), the resilient piece (18) being configured to engage the front end of the mating housing (40) during insertion of the front end of the first housing (10) into the connecting recess (41) and to be deflected inwardly, the resilient piece (18) returning resiliently to engage in the locking recess (44) when the first housing (10) is connected properly with the mating housing (40), and a restricting portion (22) formed on the resilient piece (18); and
a releasing member (27) mounted movably in the first housing (10) and having at least one forwardly projecting unlocking piece (29), the restricting portion (22) of the first housing (10) engaging the releasing member (27) and preventing forward movement of the releasing member (27) when the first housing (10) is not connected with the second housing (40), the restricting portion (22) being disengaged from the releasing member (27) when the first housing (10) is being fit in the connecting recess (41) of the mating housing (40) for permitting movement of the releasing member (27) into a position where the unlocking piece (29) deforms the shorting terminal (43) away from the second terminal fittings (42). - View Dependent Claims (17, 18, 19)
