Abstract

Methods and devices are provided for support of a body structure. The devices can be adjusted within the body of a patient in a minimally invasive or non-invasive manner, such as by applying energy percutaneously or external to the patient'"'"'s body. The energy may include, for example, acoustic energy, radio frequency energy, light energy and magnetic energy. Thus, as the body structure changes size and/or shape, the size and/or shape of the annuloplasty rings can be adjusted to provide continued reinforcement. In certain embodiments, the devices comprise a shape memory material, and further include a body member and an insert member. The body member has a circumference and a slot that extends at least partially along the circumference of the body. The insert member extends at least partially along the circumference of the body. The device has a first shape in a first configuration and a second shape in a second configuration, and is configured to transform from a first configuration to a second configuration in response to a first activation energy applied thereto.

Claims

1. An annuloplasty device comprising a shape memory material and configured to support a heart valve, said annuloplasty device comprising:

a tubular body having a circumference;

said body further comprising a slot extending along at least a portion of the body'"'"'s circumference;

an insert member within said body, said insert member extending at least partially along the circumference of the body;

wherein said annuloplasty device has a first shape in a first configuration and a second shape in a second configuration;

wherein said annuloplasty device is configured to transform from said first configuration to said second configuration in response to an activation energy applied thereto.

2. The annuloplasty device of claim 1, wherein the tubular body comprises the shape memory material

3. The annuloplasty device of claim 1, wherein the insert member comprises the shape memory material

4. The annuloplasty device of claim 1, wherein the tubular body is substantially U-shaped or C-shaped.

5. The annuloplasty device of claim 1, wherein the tubular body is substantially annular-shaped.

6. The annuloplasty device of claim 1, wherein a long axis of the slot of the tubular body is substantially parallel to the circumference of the tubular body.

7. The annuloplasty device of claim 1, wherein a long axis of the slot of the tubular body is angled with respect to the circumference of the tubular body.

8. The annuloplasty device of claim 1, wherein said shape memory material comprises a ferromagnetic material.

9. The annuloplasty device of claim 1, wherein said insert member comprises at least one of a ribbon, a round wire, a flat wire, a mesh wire, a rod-shaped wire, and a band-shaped wire.

10. The annuloplasty device of claim 1, wherein the insert member comprises a metal.

11. The annuloplasty device of claim 10, wherein the metal comprises stainless steel or elgiloy.

12. The annuloplasty device of claim 1, further comprising an energy-absorbing material over at least a portion of said device.

13. The annuloplasty device of claim 1, further comprising a covering extending over at least a portion of said device.

14. The annuloplasty device of claim 1, further comprising a thermal conductor coupled to the device.

15. The annuloplasty device of claim 1, further comprising one or more imaging markers.

16. The annuloplasty device of claim 15, wherein said one or more imaging markers comprise radiopaque markers.

17. The annuloplasty device of claim 1, wherein said first activation energy comprises electromagnetic field energy.

18. The annuloplasty device of claim 1, wherein said first activation energy comprises one of radiofrequency energy or magnetic energy.

19. The annuloplasty device of claim 1, wherein said activation energy comprises electromagnetic energy.

20. The annuloplasty device of claim 1, wherein said activation energy comprises mechanical energy.

21. The annuloplasty device of claim 1, wherein said activation energy comprises acoustic energy.

22. The annuloplasty device of claim 17, wherein said electromagnetic energy is generated using a magnetic resonance device.

23. A method of assembling an annuloplasty device comprising a shape memory material, comprising:

providing an elongate insert member;

providing a tubular body having a circumference;

said body further comprising a slot extending along at least a portion of the body'"'"'s circumference;

deforming one of the tubular body and the insert member into a memorized shape having a curvature;

positioning the insert member at least partially within the tubular body, resulting in the other of the tubular body and the insert member substantially conforming to the curvature;

wherein said annuloplasty device is configured to transform from a first configuration to a second configuration in response to an activation energy applied thereto.

24. The method of claim 23, wherein a diameter or size of the insert member is selected such that a spring force of the insert member is able to overcome the strength or stiffness of the tubular body, resulting in the insert member maintaining its shape upon insertion of the insert member at least partially within the tubular body.

25. The method of claim 23, wherein the tubular body is substantially U-shaped or C-shaped.

26. The method of claim 23, wherein the tubular body is substantially annular-shaped.

27. The method of claim 23, wherein the long axis of the slot of the tubular body is substantially vertical with respect to the long axis of the tubular body.

28. The method of claim 23, wherein the long axis of the slot of the tubular body is angled with respect to the long axis of the tubular body.

29. The method of claim 23, wherein said shape memory material comprises a ferromagnetic material.

30. The method of claim 23, wherein said insert member is selected from the group consisting of a ribbon, a round wire, a flat wire, a mesh wire, a rod-shaped wire, and a band-shaped wire.

31. The method of claim 23, wherein the insert member comprises a metal.

32. The method of claim 31, wherein the metal is stainless steel or elgiloy.

33. The method of claim 23, further comprising providing an energy-absorbing material over at least a portion of said device.

34. The method of claim 23, further comprising providing a covering extending over at least a portion of said device.

35. The method of claim 23, further comprising providing a thermal conductor coupled to the device.

36. The method of claim 23, further comprising providing one or more imaging markers extending over at least a portion of said device.

37. The method of claim 23, further comprising non-invasively monitoring the sizes of said annuloplasty device before and after said annuloplasty device changes from said first configuration to said second configuration.

38. The method of claim 37, wherein non-invasively monitoring the sizes of said annuloplasty device comprises operating a monitoring device comprising at least one of a magnetic resonance imaging device, an ultrasound imaging device, a computed tomography device, and an X-ray device.
