Abstract

A method of operating a content management system, the content management system including a central server and a plurality of content servers connected to the central server, each content server associated with a respective location, the method including receiving data at the central server for distribution to at least one of the content servers, accessing user information relating to one or more users at one or more locations, determining, from the user information, whether the received data is relevant to each user, and transmitting the data from the central server to one or more content servers according to whether the data is relevant for users at the respective locations of the content servers.

Claims

1. A method of operating a content management system, the content management system including a central server and a plurality of content servers connected to the central server, each content server associated with a respective location, comprising:

receiving data at the central server for distribution to at least one of the content servers;

accessing user information relating to one or more users at one or more locations;

determining, from the user information, whether the received data is relevant to each user; and

transmitting the data from the central server to one or more content servers according to whether the data is relevant for users at the respective locations of the content servers.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the user information includes user location and user job title.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the received data for distribution to at least one of the content servers comprises course material.

4. The method of claim 1, further comprising accessing a matrix of job titles, appropriate skills, and courses relating to those skills.

5. The method of claim 2, wherein the step of determining, from the user information, whether the course material is relevant to each user, comprises making a comparison between the user job title and the matrix.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the user information comprises learning history.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the user information comprises career progression.

8. A content management system including a central server and a plurality of content servers connected to the central server, each content server associated with a respective location, the central server operable to receive data for distribution to at least one of the content servers, to access user information relating to one or more users at one or more locations, to determine, from the user information, whether the received data is relevant to each user, and to transmit the data to one or more content servers according to whether the data is relevant for users at the respective locations of the content servers.

9. The system of claim 8, further comprising a directory server, the directory server storing the user information.

10. The system of claim 8, wherein the user information includes user location and user job title.

11. The system of claim 8, wherein the received data for distribution to at least one of the content servers comprises course material.

12. The system of claim 8, further comprising a skills database, the skills database storing a matrix of job titles, appropriate skills, and courses relating to those skills.

13. The system of claim 10, wherein the central server, when determining, from the user information, whether the course material is relevant to each user, accesses the skills database and makes a comparison between the user job title and the matrix stored in the skills database.

14. A computer program product including a computer readable medium, the computer readable medium having program code stored thereon for operating a content management system, the content management system including a central server and a plurality of content servers connected to the central server, each content server associated with a respective location, the program code comprising:

program code for receiving data at the central server for distribution to at least one of the content servers;

program code for accessing user information relating to one or more users at one or more locations;

program code for determining, from the user information, whether the received data is relevant to each user; and

program code for transmitting the data from the central server to one or more content servers according to whether the data is relevant for users at the respective locations of the content servers.

15. The computer program product of claim 14, wherein the user information includes user location and user job title.

16. The computer program product of claim 14, wherein the received data for distribution to at least one of the content servers comprises course material.

17. The computer program product of claim 14, further comprising program code for accessing a matrix of job titles, appropriate skills, and courses relating to those skills.

18. The computer program product of claim 15, wherein the program code for determining, from the user information, whether the course material is relevant to each user, comprises program code for making a comparison between the user job title and the matrix.

19. The computer program product of claim 14, wherein the user information comprises learning history.

20. The computer program product of claim 14, wherein the user information comprises career progression.

21. A system including a computer readable medium, the computer readable medium having program code stored thereon for operating a content management system, the content management system including a central server and a plurality of content servers connected to the central server, each content server associated with a respective location, the program code comprising:

program code for receiving data at the central server for distribution to at least one of the content servers;

program code for accessing user information relating to one or more users at one or more locations;

program code for determining, from the user information, whether the received data is relevant to each user; and

program code for transmitting the data from the central server to one or more content servers according to whether the data is relevant for users at the respective locations of the content servers.

A computer data signal embodied in a carrier wave, the computer data signal having program code stored thereon for operating a content management system, the content management system including a central server and a plurality of content servers connected to the central server, each content server associated with a respective location, the program code comprising:

program code for receiving data at the central server for distribution to at least one of the content servers;

program code for accessing user information relating to one or more users at one or more locations;

program code for determining, from the user information, whether the received data is relevant to each user; and

program code for transmitting the data from the central server to one or more content servers according to whether the data is relevant for users at the respective locations of the content servers.

23. A system for operating a content management system, the content management system including a central server and a plurality of content servers connected to the central server, each content server associated with a respective location, comprising:

means for receiving data at the central server for distribution to at least one of the content servers;

means for accessing user information relating to one or more users at one or more locations;

means for determining, from the user information, whether the received data is relevant to each user; and

means for transmitting the data from the central server to one or more content servers according to whether the data is relevant for users at the respective locations of the content servers.
