Abstract

The present invention relates to providing new vaccines and treatments for the diseases related to canine influenza virus. It discloses influenza viral antigens, and methods of presenting these antigens to canines, especially dogs. It relates to attenuated and killed vaccines. The present invention relates to experimentally generated canine and equine influenza viruses. The invention also includes influenza A, including H3, N8, H3N8, H7N7 and viruses which contain at least one genome segment from an canine or equine influenza virus. The present invention also relates to the use of these viruses in therapeutic compositions to protect canines, dogs in particular, from diseases caused by influenza viruses.

Claims

1. A method of immunizing dogs against influenza virus, the method comprising administering to a dog a therapeutically effective amount of a vaccine containing at least one attenuated or killed influenza virus.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein said virus is selected from the group consisting of subtype H3, N8 and or H3N8, and any combination thereof.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein said virus is influenza subtype H3N8.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein said virus is derived from canine or equine origin.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein said virus may or may not be capable of being transmitted to a dog.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein said virus is capable of being transmitted to a dog.

7. The method of claim 5, wherein said virus is not capable of being transmitted to a dog.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the amount of said virus is from 10 to 10000 HA units.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein the amount of said virus is from 100 to 1000 HA units.

10. The method of claim 5, wherein said virus is derived from equine origin.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein said virus is an equine influenza virus.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein said virus is derived from the antigen Equine Influenza Strain A/Equine/2/Miami/1/63.

13. The method of claim 11, wherein said virus is selected from the group consisting of,

a) Equine Influenza Strain A/Equine/2/Miami/1/63, and or

b) Equine Influenza Strain A/Equine 2/Miami/1/63, passaged and deposited seed strain Master Seed Virus, Lot 3 17-9, labeled as Equine Flu A2,3 17-9 MSV, 1 1-2 1-86.

14. The method of claim 5, wherein said virus is derived from canine origin.

15. The method of claims 1, wherein said virus is killed.

16. The method of claims 1, wherein said vaccine further contains a adjuvant, where the adjuvant may be selected from a) metabolizable adjuvant, b) non-metabolizable adjuvant, c) 2% Alum, d) 5% Alum, e) Quil A, and f) Cholesterol or any combination thereof.

17. A process for producing a vaccine, where said vaccine comprises the vaccine compositions of claims 1.
