Abstract

An approach provides for remote digital media ingest with centralized editorial. A remote ingest process is initiated over a data network to create a media file from a feed (such as a live broadcast feed). The media file is stored at a central repository. A device is configured to edit the media file by using a proxy file of the media file, wherein the proxy file represents a reduced file size of the media file.

Claims

1. A method for editing of digital media, the method comprising:

ingesting a feed, over a data network, to create a media file;

storing the media file at a central repository; and

communicating with a device to provide editing of the media file by using a proxy file of the media file, wherein the proxy file represents a reduced file size of the media file.

2. A method according to claim 1, wherein the media file represents a video information, and the proxy file represents a lower resolution version of the video information.

3. A method according to claim 2, wherein the video is encoded according to a Group of Pictures (GOP) format.

4. A method according to claim 3, further comprising:

sending a command to an editing application on the device for editing the proxy file, wherein the device records edits locally in response to the command.

5. A method according to claim 1, wherein the feed includes a live broadcast feed.

6. An apparatus for providing editing of digital media, the apparatus comprising:

a processor configured to ingest a feed, over a data network, to create a media file;

a first communication interface configured to forward the media file for storage at a central repository; and

a second communication interface configured to communicate with a device to provide editing of the media file by using a proxy file of the media file, wherein the proxy file represents a reduced file size of the media file.

7. An apparatus according to claim 6, wherein the media file represents a video information, and the proxy file represents a lower resolution version of the video information.

8. An apparatus according to claim 7, wherein the video is encoded according to a Group of Pictures (GOP) format.

9. An apparatus according to claim 8, wherein the second communication interface is further configured to send a command to an editing application on the device for editing the proxy file, wherein the device records edits locally in response to the command.

10. An apparatus according to claim 6, wherein the feed includes a live broadcast feed.

11. A method for processing digital media, the method comprising:

ingesting information from a feed to create a media file; and

transmitting the media file over a data network to a central repository, wherein the media file is edited using a proxy file corresponding to the media file, the proxy file representing a reduced file size of the media file.

12. A method according to claim 11, wherein the media file represents a video information, and the proxy file represents a lower resolution version of the video information.

13. A method according to claim 12, wherein the video is encoded according to a Group of Pictures (GOP) format.

14. A method according to claim 13, wherein a editor server is configured to send a command to an editing application on the device for editing the proxy file, wherein the device records edits locally in response to the command.

15. A method according to claim 11, wherein the feed includes a live broadcast feed.

16. An apparatus for processing digital media, the apparatus comprising:

a processor configured to ingest information from a feed to create a media file; and

a communication interface configured to transmit the media file over a data network to a central repository, wherein the media file is edited using a proxy file corresponding to the media file, the proxy file representing a reduced file size of the media file.

17. An apparatus according to claim 16, wherein the media file represents a video information, and the proxy file represents a lower resolution version of the video information.

18. An apparatus according to claim 17, wherein the video is encoded according to a Group of Pictures (GOP) format.

19. An apparatus according to claim 18, wherein a editor server is configured to send a command to an editing application on the device for editing the proxy file, wherein the device records edits locally in response to the command.

20. An apparatus according to claim 16, wherein the feed includes a live broadcast feed.
