Abstract

The embodiments disclosed include a system and method for sharing services between service profiles on a single telecommunications device resulting in improved ease of access for a user who wishes to access services through different service profiles. The user can access services in multiple service profiles with a single device. In one embodiment, the techniques described below are enabled through a Session Initiation Protocol (“SIP”)-based next-generation network (“NGN”), such as the IP Multimedia Subsystem (“IMS”) architecture.

Claims

1. A method for sharing available services between multiple service profiles on a device comprising:

providing a first service profile and a second service profile for the device in a Session Initiation Protocol (“

SIP”

) based network, wherein the first service profile is associated with a first set of services and the second service profile is associated with a second set of services;

receiving a registration of the device over the network with a selection of one of the first service profile or the second service profile; and

providing a first service from the first set of services upon the registration of the second profile.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising providing a second service from the second set of services upon the registration of the first profile.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the first set of services includes services in the second set of services.

4. The method according to claim 1 wherein the device comprises at least one of a telephone, a cellular phone, a computer, a personal digital assistant (“

PDA”

), a television (“

TV”

), a set top box, a digital video recorder (“

DVR”

) or any combination thereof.

5. The method according to claim 1 wherein the SIP-based network is a next-generation network (“

NGN”

) network.

6. The method according to claim 5 wherein the NGN network is an IP Multimedia Subsystem (“

IMS”

) network.

7. The method of claim 1 further comprising authenticating the device with an access network.

8. The method according to claim 7 wherein authenticating a device comprises using a subscriber identity module (“

SIM”

).

9. The method of claim 7 wherein the access network is in communication with the SIP-based network.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein available services from the first set of services or the second set of services comprise at least one of applications, preferences, policies, or data.

11. The method of claim 10 wherein services of the first set of services or the second set of services that are unavailable are displayed as unavailable.

12. The method of claim 11 wherein the unavailable services are grayed out on the device.

13. The method of claim 10 wherein the available services are authenticated.

14. The method according to claim 1 wherein the first service profile comprises a default profile that is registered automatically.

15. The method according to claim 1 wherein the first service profile is one of a work profile or a home profile, and the second service profile is one of the work profile or the home profile, wherein the first service profile is different from the second service profile.

16. The method according to claim 1 wherein the registration of the device comprises using a session initiation protocol (“

SIP”

) proxy.

17. A communications system comprising:

a Session Initiation Protocol (“

SIP”

)-based network; and

a Session Initiation Protocol (“

SIP”

) proxy coupled with the SIP-based network and operative to receive registration for a first profile or a second profile, the first profile comprising a first set of services and the second profile comprising a second set of services, wherein at least one service in the second set of services is available with the first profile and the second profile.

18. The communications system of claim 17 further comprising a telecommunications device coupled with the SIP based network, wherein the telecommunications device transmits the registration from the first profile or the second profile.

19. The communications system of claim 17 wherein the services comprise at least one of an application, a preference, a policy, or data.

20. The communications system of claim 17 wherein the at least one telecommunications device comprises at least one of a telephone, a cellular phone, a computer, a personal digital assistant (“

PDA”

), a television (“

TV”

), a set top box, a digital video recorder (“

DVR”

)or any combination thereof.

21. The communications system of claim 17 wherein the SIP-based network is an IP Multimedia Subsystem (“

IMS”

) network.

22. The communications system of claim 17 wherein the first profile is one of a work profile or a home profile, and the second profile is one of the work profile or the home profile, wherein the first profile is different from the second profile.

23. A computer-readable medium having stored therein data representing instructions executable by a programmed processor for sharing services between persona, the computer-readable medium comprising instructions for:

providing a first persona and a second persona, wherein the first persona is associated with a first set of services and the second persona is associated with a second set of services;

receiving a registration with the first persona; and

sharing a service from the second set of services with the first persona upon the registration of the first persona.

24. The instructions of claim 23 wherein the services comprise at least one of applications, preferences, policies, or data.

25. The instructions of claim 23 further comprising authenticating the device over a Session Initiation Protocol (“

SIP”

)-based network.

26. The instructions of claim 23 wherein the step of sharing comprises at least one of graying out unavailable services, authenticated available services, or automatically changing available services.

27. A method for receiving available services between multiple service profiles on a device comprising:

receiving access to a first service profile and a second service profile in a Session Initiation Protocol (“

SIP”

) based network, wherein the first service profile is associated with a first set of services and the second service profile is associated with a second set of services;

registering the device over the network with the second service profile; and

accessing a first service from the first set of services upon the registration of the second profile.

28. The method of claim 27 wherein services from the first set of services and second set of services are represented by icons on the device.

29. The method of claim 28 wherein services from the first set of services that are not available upon registration of the second profile are represented by grayed out icons.

30. A method for displaying available services from multiple service profiles on a device comprising:

providing a first service profile and a second service profile for the device in a Session Initiation Protocol (“

SIP”

) based network, wherein the first service profile is associated with a first set of services and the second service profile is associated with a second set of services; and

displaying icons associated with services from the first set of services and the second set of services, wherein unavailable services from either the first set of services or the second set of services are displayed as unavailable.

31. The method of claim 30, wherein the unavailable services are displayed as grayed-out icons, and the available services are displayed as active icons.
