Abstract

The disclosed embodiments relate to a patient monitor for evaluating a patient. The patient monitor may comprise a capnometer that is adapted to receive at least a portion of exhaled flow from the patient and to produce a first output indicative of exhaled carbon dioxide associated with the exhaled flow, an oximeter that is adapted to receive an input from the patient and to produce a second output indicative of oxygen saturation of blood of the patient, and a processor adapted to receive at least the first output and the second output and to correlate the first output with the second output.

Claims

1. A patient monitor for evaluating a patient, comprising:

a capnometer that is adapted to receive at least a portion of exhaled flow from the patient and to produce a first output indicative of exhaled carbon dioxide associated with the exhaled flow;

an oximeter that is adapted to receive an input from the patient and to produce a second output indicative of oxygen saturation of blood of the patient, and

a processor adapted to receive at least the first output and the second output and to correlate the first output with the second output.

2. The monitor of claim 1 wherein the processor is programmed to calculate a relationship between at least the first output and the second output.

3. The monitor of claim 1 wherein the processor is programmed to calculate an index of second output based on the first output.

4. The monitor of claim 1, comprising a flow sensor adapted to measure at least one ventilation parameter of the patient and to produce a third output indicative of the ventilation parameter.

5. The monitor of claim 4 wherein the processor is programmed to compare the second output and the first output and to compare the second output and the third output.

6. The monitor of claim 4 wherein the processor is programmed to calculate a relationship between the second output and the first output and between the second output and the third output.

7. The monitor of claim 4 wherein the processor is programmed to compare the first output, the second output and the third output.

8. The monitor of claim 4 wherein the processor is programmed to calculate a relationship between the first output, the second output and the third output.

9. The monitor of claim 4 wherein the flow sensor comprises a spirometer.

10. The monitor of claim 4 wherein the spirometer is adapted for attachment to a disposable flow tube and for measuring flow through the disposable flow tube.

11. The monitor of claim 4 wherein the processor is programmed to receive an input indicative of a body dimension of the patient and to use that input to calculate at least one normal ventilation parameter of the patient.

12. The monitor of claim 1 wherein the exhaled flow is derived from a forced exhalation maneuver that includes an exhalation of an expiratory reserve volume.

13. The monitor of claim 1 wherein the exhaled flow is derived from a forced exhalation maneuver that includes an exhalation of a vital capacity.

14. A method for evaluating a patient, comprising:

determining a carbon dioxide value of an exhaled flow;

producing a first output indicative of the carbon dioxide value; and

measuring an oxygen saturation of blood of the patient;

producing a second output indicative of the oxygen saturation of the blood; and

using a processor, comparing the first output with the second output.

15. The method of claim 14 comprising calculating a relationship between the first output and the second output.

16. The method of claim 14 comprising calculating an index of the second output based on the first output.

17. The method of claim 14, comprising producing a third output indicative of at least one ventilation parameter of the patient based on the exhaled flow.

18. The method of claim 17 comprising:

comparing the second output to the first output; and

comparing the second output and the third output.

19. The method of claim 17 comprising calculating a relationship between the second output and the first output and between the second output and the third output.

20. The method of claim 17 comprising comparing the first output, the second output and the third output.

21. The method of claim 17 comprising calculating a relationship between the first output, the second output and the third output.

22. The method of claim 14 comprising receiving the exhaled flow with a spirometer.

23. The method of claim 22 wherein the spirometer is adapted for attachment to a disposable flow tube and for measuring flow through the disposable flow tube.

24. A patient monitor for evaluating a patient, the monitor comprising:

a spirometer that is adapted to be attached to a flow tube to measure an exhaled flow from the patient and to produce a first output indicative of the flow of ventilation during a forced ventilation maneuver of the patient;

a capnometer that is adapted to receive at least a portion of the exhaled flow and to produce a second output indicative of an exhaled carbon dioxide value associated with the exhaled flow;

an oximeter that is adapted to receive an input from the patient and to produce a third output indicative of oxygen saturation of the blood of the patient based on the input from the patient; and

a processor adapted to receive the third output and at least the second output and correlate the third output the second output.

25. The monitor of claim 24 wherein:

the spirometer is adapted to produce an output indicative of an end of a forced exhalation maneuver of the patient; and

the second output comprises at least one of the maximum carbon dioxide value associated with the exhaled flow and the carbon dioxide at the end of the forced exhalation maneuver.

26. The monitor of claim 24 wherein the processor is programmed to receive an input indicative of a body dimension of the patient and to use that input to calculate a normal vital capacity of the patient.

27. The monitor of claim 25 wherein the forced exhalation maneuver is an exhalation that begins without a preceding maximum inspiration.

28. The monitor of claim 25 wherein the forced exhalation maneuvers is an exhalation that begins at a point during normal tidal breathing.

29. The monitor of claim 25 wherein the forced exhalation maneuvers is an exhalation that begins at a point near an end of normal tidal breathing.

30. The monitor of claim 24 wherein the processor is programmed to calculate a relationship between at least the second output and the third output.

31. The monitor of claim 24 wherein the processor is programmed to calculate an index of third output based on the second output.
