Abstract

A wireless handset including an antenna array. The antenna array includes an active antenna element and two passive antenna elements. The active and passive antenna elements are arranged to form a triangle with a vertex. The vertex includes a vertex angle and the active antenna element is disposed at the vertex. The vertex angle is between 90 degrees and 180 degrees.

Claims

1. A wireless handset comprising an antenna array, the antenna array comprising:

an active antenna element; and

two passive antenna elements;

wherein the active and passive antenna elements are arranged to form a triangle with a vertex;

the vertex includes a vertex angle;

the active antenna element is disposed at the vertex; and

the vertex angle is between 90 degrees and 180 degrees.

2. The handset of claim 1, wherein the antenna array further comprises a plurality of impedance components coupled to each of the antenna elements.

3. The handset of claim 1, wherein the antenna array further comprises a ground plane.

4. The handset of claim 2, wherein the antenna array further comprises a transceiver device coupled to the impedance components.

5. The handset of claim 4, wherein the transceiver device is configured to transmit control signals to the impedance components to adjust a phase of the passive antenna elements.

6. The handset of claim 4, wherein the antenna array further comprises a general purpose microprocessor coupled to the transceiver device.

7. The handset of claim 6, wherein the general purpose microprocessor is configured to control the transceiver device.

8. The handset of claim 6, wherein the general purpose microprocessor is configured to determine an optimal phase.

9. The handset of claim 2, wherein each of the plurality of impedance components further comprises a switch, a capacitive load and an inductive load.

10. The handset of claim 9, wherein the capacitive load and the inductive load are coupled to the ground plane.

11. The handset of claim 9 wherein the switch is a single-pole-double-throw switch.

12. The handset of claim 9, wherein the microprocessor is further configured to control the switch.

13. The handset of claim 9, wherein the switch is a single-pole-multi-throw switch.

14. The handset of claim 4, wherein the transceiver device is coupled to the antenna array by a plurality of control lines.

15. The handset of claim 13, wherein the single-pole-multi-throw switch is configured to read Binary Code Decimal (BCD) signals transmitted on the plurality of control lines.

16. The handset of claim 2, wherein the impedance components further comprises a varactor.
